@tmntation
if I was matt murdock and I found out the same chemical spill that blinded me and lit the world on “fire” turned a bunch of turtles into pizza loving ninjas I would lose it actually
I’m not going lie the thought of matt finding out he’s radioactive ooze brothers with this particular version of the tmnt has me in tears
matt, trying to recount his childhood and ignore the smell of turtle, three day old pizza, and sewer: …..so yah, after my dad died I was basically on my own.
the turtles, already planning on buying their radioactive waste brother a shirt that says “I fell in radioactive waste and all I got was these glasses”: cowabummer dude. our dad’s a rat
idk he looks like he's come to terms with it
am i the only weirdo who thinks of this every time i see Raph's 2007 Nightwatcher outfit 😭
anyways,, remember the early 2000s movie about the green guy with a temper who puts on some armor to go and rescue people/someone? yeah that one
Regarding TMNT 2007
Listen
I consume ninja turtle content like a drug. I will watch/read any and all of it regardless of the quality
With that said, 2007 was disappointing the first time I watched it, simply because Donnie and Mikey are my top turtles. Don’t get me wrong, I love the classic Raph vs Leo plot, and 2007 is the absolute pinnacle of that plot. But do we…do we like 2007? Like as a fandom? Do we feel like it was a good movie?
I feel like I’m 50/50 on it. I really loved the concept of the torn-apart family; it felt dark and emotional and moody and the stakes were high. But the lack of Don and Mike screentime was a major letdown. Every time I watch it, it’s still a letdown.
Talk to me. I am happy to begin a discourse.
So do we like 2007???
Yes
No
Oof, sorry for the long and probably overly personal tag ramble to such a simple question :'D I just got introspective
💬 1 🔁 7 ❤️ 17 · prompt ask! · Could I request either 27 or 28 from the hugs prompt list with Leo and Raph? Whichever you're more in the mo
I'll answer that question with a fic about Leo and Raph making amends, and a few of my own words. Though, truly, @side-shuffling-hyperfixations really covered everything that I had to say. XD (Very well said, dude!)
But anyways, yes, I think we the fandom enjoy the concept of 2007. There are moments in the movie, (cinematography, MUSIC, visual effects, brother interactions, etc) that we love.
We love the idea that Leo was sent away by Master Splinter to become a better leader by going to South America. This opens so many opportunities for the community to really delve into Leo trying to survive on his own in the jungle, refusing to answer letters and becoming more distant with his brothers, and the very real fact that Leo KILLED men as the Ghost of the Jungle. (Those screams were not "Owie" screams and we all know it.) Did he ever tell his family of the lives he took to protect his village? Did he keep it a pestering, slicing secret that grows over time until it boils over and explodes out of his mouth horrifying his Sensei and brothers?? There's seriously so much to work with here.
We love the idea of Don and Mikey getting their own jobs. And, to be frank, the execution of these small but dearly loved scenes was pretty well done too, with great voice actors and hilarious comedic timing. :) "NO, I'm not playing hard to get-- I'm telling you, sir, it's not that kind of phone line!" XD Oh, the treasure of IT Support Donnie. ~ Even Mikey steps up with working as a kid's party holder! Like, dude, this is some great opportunity to see each brother learning to work on their own, but also MISS each other because they're apart. <3 I wanted to see a lot more MISSING EACH OTHER in the movie than we got.
We love the idea of the subtle hinting that Leo left DONNIE in charge when he was shipped to South America. That decision must've really torn apart Donatello from Raphael too. All throughout the movie we see these two bickering and not getting along. Donnie's still afraid of Raph when he's about to throw a punch, but it's clear that Raph hates having his (younger?) brother be in charge of him. That would open up many avenues of growing bitterness, angst, and even a big fight between the two. But no, we really got none of that. :(
We love the idea of Raph becoming the Nightwatcher. It brings up many questions-- when did he decide to don that helmet? Was it because he felt trapped in the lair with no job? Or was it literally just to spite Leo for not being there? Or, and this is one of my favorite theories from an amazing fic I read a while back, did Raph take up the role because he failed to save the ORIGINAL Nightwatcher? Was it Casey? Did Casey get seriously injured one night cause Raph wasn't fast enough to save his best friend? According to one of the deleted alternate beginnings of the movie, Casey had been doing vigilante work too.
As you can see, there's SO MUCH to work with in regards to how this poor, broken family will learn to trust and love each other again. How they learn to share secrets instead of hiding them in shame or bitterness. And especially-- how they ALL learn to forgive one another. I don't just mean Raph forgiving Leo, I want MIKEY AND DONNIE to forgive Leo. For him not returning any of their letters. For him taking so long to "become a better leader". And for leaving them in such brokenness in the first place.
Hehe rant over. XD I do like this movie. The soundtrack is wicked good, and the little bits that we see of the brothers getting along are so so cherished. My favorite scenes by far are when the brothers all run to find Raphael passed out in April and Casey's apartment, the rooftop fight scene in the rain, and the TEENY moment when Leo's plays around with his brothers when he returns. This movie has its ups and downs as any film does. But what it does give is worth a thousand words and then some. Just like with the Rise series, it isn't as much what the series does, but more so what it's fans do after being given it. :) The possibilities are ENDLESS~
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk HA.

so. TMNT 2007. i read the related "prequel" comics & rewatched the movie. here's what i think.
my complete, lengthy review is still to come, but here's a summary:
(borrowing this description from someone else) it's an okay movie that's held up on 'wobbly stilts' of a few great scenes, overall good humour, and gorgeous visuals/animation. i'd personally give it 7/10.
i've now watched this movie as both a non-TMNT fan and now a casual/growing TMNT fan. it was quite enjoyable as the former, and hard to swallow as the latter.
my personal view is that many of their writing decisions were made simply to drive the plot forward and to create conflict & drama. in particular, i think someone really wanted a full-out fight between Leo & Raph, thus they wrote everything else to push the story towards that.
i think this ^ is a large reason why Splinter & Leo were written so terribly and out-of-character with bad decisions and personalities. their characterizations are honestly my biggest gripe. along with Splinter's massive favourtism towards Leo.
the way they did Leo's going-away-for-a-couple-years thing was stupid. i won't say it's totally unbelieavable, esp for a 19 yr old, but it requires vast changes/improvement.
on that note -- i've written a separate post for this, but it doesn't even feel like the turtles are 19-year-olds. i also think it was a huge missed opportunity to have a TMNT onscreen media uniquely focused on them at this age, the cusp of adulthood and independence.
for a movie that's supposed to be about family (a general TMNT staple, but also a direct quote from the movie's director), it feels like anything but. Splinter has torn them apart and takes no action or responsibility to rectify or soothe things; Leo going away in the first place makes no sense; Raph's (very valid) feelings are dismissed by everyone; Donnie and Mikey have a terrible lack of screentime; and all of their conflict is quickly and magically solved because they had to work together to defeat a bad guy.
side note: i cannot accept this movie is any kind of follow-up to the original 1990s live-action trilogy. i understand that in-story, 4-5 years has passed by or whatever, but there's too much disconnect for me.
and the prequel comics? some of them are good, yes. there is some backstory added, and more spotlight on Donnie and Mikey. but most of the comic content feels irrelevant because it's never acknowledged or built upon in the movie. (they were made from the director's pre-production and backstory notes.) but the comics also make me angrier because they add to many of the issues i had with the movie's writing decisions.
in the end, i think i'm just mostly disappointed because this movie had a lot of potential and interesting avenues to explore, but they failed in their execution. (it also sounds like studio meddling is to blame... the director himself said in an interview: "I hate the studio recut of it that we had to do, but it’s just such a fun movie to watch, regardless. ... I’m still proud as heck of it, and I love that it’s found a lot of audiences over the past few years.")
more thoughts to come! 🤪 and please add your own thoughts as well!
“Ninja Tag”
An omitted scene from the original TMNT 2007 movie script submitted by the Mirage team
INT. TURTLES LAIR - TRAINING DOJO Leo feverishly works out. He stops, looking up, panting.
LEONARDO (off screen) Does ANYBODY train anymore?!
MICHELANGELO (off screen) Just a sec, dude! I’m almost at level eighteen. (off screen video game explosion) Scratch that… seventeen.
LEONARDO DONNAY!
DONATELLO (off screen) In… uh… a few minutes, Leo. I’m in the middle of-
KZZZT-BOOOM! - An off screen invention blows up.
DONATELLO (off screen) Um… make that another hour.
Leo sighs. Splinter walks by, not stopping.
SPLINTER A true leader knows how to motivate his troops regardless of their own motivations.
Splinter walks past a large FUSE BOX.
Leo thinks a beat. Then smiles.
WIDE SHOT OF LAIR MAIN ROOM as
- KACHUNK! - the entire room goes BLACK.
TURTLES (off screen) Aw man! What’s goin’ on?! WHO TURNED OUT THE LIGHTS!?
LEONARDO (off screen) Ninja tag, topside!
CUT TO:
INT. DARK CHAMBER - NIGHT Another place that isn’t the TMNT lair. Dark and mysterious. Don’t know where we are. Feels ceremonial. We see close up detail of statue GRANITE.
A DEEP VOICE chants off screen in a South American tongue as HIGHTECH GEAR is placed on the rock. It becomes powered, triggering a reaction in the stone itself.
Music builds as we see quick shots of the granite cracks GLOWING RED. Camera travels with the rising glow.
End on a pair of DEAD EYES - suddenly come to life. Red glow.
CUT TO:
EXT. NYC ROOFTOPS - NIGHT The boys stand high atop the city below. Readying to run a gauntlet of rooftop hazards. They spy a BILLBOARD off in the Distance.
MICHELANGELO First one to touch old faithful over there-
DONATELLO -does the other team’s chores for a week.
Leo and Raph glare at each other.
LEONARDO/RAPHAEL Deal.
MICHELANGELO I’m with Leo!
DONATELLO Actually, I think you and I should pair up, Mikey.
MICHELANGELO You kiddin’ me?! I mean, no offense, Donnie – but you ain’t exactly the biggest hitter on the bench.
Don is grinning. Observing the subtle tension.
DONATELLO Just trust me on this one.
Music builds to a fun number as the two teams run parallel on buildings. The course requires them to work as a TEAM, throwing, catching and propelling one another from obstacle to obstacle.
Leo accidentally slips, PLOWING Raph face-first into a brick wall. Raph, convinced Leo did it on purpose, uses his next opportunity to hurl Leo dangerously high and far over a billboard. The situation escalates at each juncture.
LEONARDO Have you been avoiding me? Barely seen you since I got home.
RAPHAEL I been busy.
LEONARDO (sarcastic) I see. So… you’re definitely not upset at me or anything, right?
RAPHAEL Why’d you think that?
LEONARDO I don’t know… your brother gets to go on a world-wide training mission and you have to stay home. Might upset me too.
RAPHAEL Are you trying to make me mad?
LEONARDO I’m just saying, I’d understand if you were upset.
Their intensity ESCALATES.
RAPHAEL You wouldn’t understand the first thing about me, daddy’s boy - OOF!.
They both trip over a duct, tumbling in a ball. They stop rolling, continue fighting.
LEONARDO Is that what this is about? You think Splinter likes me best?
RAPHAEL You’d love that, wouldn’t you?
WIDER SHOT - Don and Mikey are already sitting there.
MICHAELANGELO So nice of you to join us, gentledudes.
DONATELLO And by the way, I prefer the classic military corner tuck for my bed sheets.
Mikey and Don high five. Leo and Raph aren’t amused. They stare down. Raph does his BULLY FLINCH fake-lunge… only Leo doesn’t twitch.
Here is the piece I did for HIGH3!
Huge thanks again to the amazing s-bis (ch5616) for organizing it and getting me to be a part of it! <3 So happy. I can’t wait to see the book!
I just had to go with 2007 movie TMNT because… well, it’s what got me into TMNT so it holds a special place in my little wrinkled heart. <3
I could go on for ages about how much I adore of 2003 raphleo BECAUSE THEY'RE THE BEST VERSION OF RAPHLEO
they're siblings ur honor
Every Leo needs a show/book/movie to obsess over that is completely separate from anything related to being a ninja.
It's just nice to see him have his own silly interests.
Nerdy Leo has my heart
since 2003 Leo didn't have one i think we should make up a fictional media for him to obsess over
Sometimes a family is a rat and his four (little) turtles …
You know that lackluster Don & Leo reunion handshake? I fixed it.
