This week I got back to what I really truly love: portraits. I continued to add a stream of consciousness like I was doing with my small pieces and I’ve found myself not thinking as much. There are still smaller techniques from those small pieces I want to incorporate in these little portraits, but I have had a lot of fun working on these this past week.
another small little piece I made, this time sitting in a field for a long while, accompanied by a guy flying a drone overhead.
A little piece from the series I’ve been working on, done sitting in a parking garage for about 2 and a half hours and extra details added later.

Before I left for break, I met with Dorn to take about what I was working on for advanced drawing this semester. She was able to provide a lot of great insight into her thoughts on liminal spaces and what they can mean to a person. We discussed my stream of conscious work and she continued to encourage me to sit and continue to work on the pieces. Now all there is left for me to do is to make.
While I love the developments I’ve made with this work both in style of working and concept matter, I don’t think this will be my strongest body of work I will have made, but I think it will be a body of work that will be instrumental in my growth as an artist and in my own personal style. I think knowing that is making this project both difficult, but also exciting for me because I'm excited for what is at the end of it... ironically.

I have a direction. Now its time to execute.
After discussions with Speaker and having a week to explore, I have a pretty good idea of what my plan is going to be moving forward into the rest of the semester.
I need to be in the spaces, rather than draw them from my imagination or ideas. I plan to sit in these spaces for 1-2 hours and sketch, draw, write, brain dump, etc all through my sketchbook. I will then take these notes and experiences and transcribe them into final pieces.
I am still unsure if these pieces will be large, singular hanging pieces, or if they will be small pieces, bound together in a book for the reader to flip through and enjoy on a more personal level. Either way, I am excited about this direction.
Jason Parker’s “Overwhelmed by it All” at Juddy Roller Melbourne.
Opening on March 23rd, 2018 at Juddy Roller Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia is artist Jason Parker’s solo exhibition, “Overwhelmed by it All.”
Despite his chosen narrative and content Jason’s optimism seeps through in the vibrancy of his chosen color pallet, the resilience present in the subjects he chooses and the ironic beauty of the flowering weeds. Packed full of emotion a tale of beauty and struggle “Overwhelmed by it All” is an ambiguous tale of what it means to be alive today.

lovely work! <3
The biggest turning point for me this week was meeting with Speaker on Tuesday. I had lots of questions and was need in desperate help. I have been stuck with figuring out visuals to apply to my concept.
I knew that meeting with Speaker was going to be the best plan of action for me because he comes from a similar place of being both a designer and fine artist. I always struggle with the transition between the two and Speaker was a great help.
His main point of action to help me was for me to fill up the watercolor block I've been so careful about. I need to just make, and stop thinking.

This week has been a real struggle but has also given me a lot of time to push myself and try to figure out why I keep struggling. It didn’t dawn on me until I was talking to someone about my struggles last semester: I always find it difficult to switch from the literal, quick concept that is required in design to the less literal and obvious interpretation found in fine art.
I worked for hours today trying to plan and come up with a means of execution for my work this semester and I struggled because I am not allowing myself to think past my original idea. I need to regroup and reconsider.
While I think I am moving in a strong direction, I think my visuals are keeping me back. I did some research and stumbled upon a relatively new favorite of mine: Awanqi (pictured above). The use of color and line within each illustration is just lovely. It reminded me that I don’t necessarily need panels to tell a story. I’m also looking at the historical paintings of the neoclassicists who used every element in their paintings to tell a story. I plan to move forward with both of these things in mind.
By next Wednesday I will have at least one piece done. I need to get moving on these pieces and with my body of work for this semester.

I definitely have some catching up to do, but now that Senior Show is done and our first round of boards are complete, I will have much more free time to work on advanced and I am so excited to dedicate my time to this class. I have great plans ahead!
a peak into my sketchbook
As I start to plan and experiment, I’m forcing myself to stay away from my comfort zones and draw different things. I tried sketching a few spaces that I cherish but also are located in places that I feel have held me back or are the location of someplace I’m headed. I plan to experiment with painting some of these spaces before my meeting with Dash on Wednesday.
