Watched Mother Mary again. It's honestly wild that this film was written by a cis man, but I guess he's an ally of wlw. I cried when the credits hit. Those two loved each other so much. 😭
The romantic in me hopes that they will see each other again.

THIS SONG MEANS SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AFTER WATCHING MOTHER MARY AND IT IS SOMEHOW MORE HORNY
Watched Mother Mary tonight. I went in with absolutely no expectation or real idea what I was watching. Without any expectations at all, Mother Mary was fantastic! Sound was great. Every shot, shadow, and harsh light made it feel so intimate. I loved the ceaseless flowery prose from Sam and the strangely submissive one-note speech pattern from Mother Mary, their constant tug of war. Their weird, tense, again, intimate connection is something you can cut with a knife. Very eerie and perfectly paced scares. Mixed toxic lesbian angst with eerie ghost story (A Ghost Story?!) Again, everything kept teetering on a knife's edge. LOVED the flashbacks/storytelling methods. Visuals were just amazing. Freaky, beautiful, and emotional. Captures the nebulous and fluid range of human emotions in its non-Newtonian way. Did I mention the sound?
"I liked the way you saw me. I liked how it felt." Mother Mary, 2026
What’s gayer manifesting the ghost of your relationship with a woman that haunts you, possesses you, and ruins your life until you run to her to exorcize it out of your chest with a pair of scissors or gay sex
It's been about 24 hours now since I saw Mother Mary, so now that I've had time to think about it and let it steep within my waters and me, here are some thoughts. Warning: Here be spoilers!
I'd be Hilda. If I was one of those characters, she's the one I'd be. That's a no-brainer. A bitch knows herself, and that's that.
This movie is sooooo gay ass. Okay, fine, they don't even kiss, much less fuck, it's all subtext, yada yada yada, BUT COME ON: Sam LITERALLY PENETRATES Mother Mary with her fingers (we even get some kind of fuck ass POV penetration shot!) in order to help MM find some relief! The whole thing is an allegory of two lesbians who had a bad break up years ago and now need to fuck one last time before either one of them can ever truly know peace again! I said what I said!
In this regard, I found it to be a very beautiful and romantic movie. It was definitely hokey at times, especially the whole "best song in the history of songs" thing (and bless your heart, Hunter Schafer, for that monologue at the end!), but the movie repeatedly talked about needing to have an open heart, which is something I myself believe, so I gave my heart to the film, I surrendered to it, and for doing so, I felt REWARDED! To paraphrase one of my all-time favorite films, Double Indemnity (Barbara!), Mother Mary had a heart as big as a house, and I loved the movie for its big, beautiful heart.
I love "the ghost" and the whole visual texture of the film. It was like Under the Skin, but instead of human meat and aliens, we get red chiffon and Gaylor.
Michaela Coel is. So. Fucking. Beautiful! I need more of her in my life, yes please and thank you!
Also, Annie was terrific, and I LOVED her "Spooky Action" dance!
That soundtrack is absolutely fucking slay. I know that A24 has it available to pre-order on vinyl, but I don't own a record player. So, I hope it also comes out on CD.
mother mary ain’t special if i had a homoromantic bestie that was michaela coel i’d write powerful moving pop icon worthy songs for her too
Mother Mary's affectation of holding the microphone between hands folded in prayer 🙏
thinking about the fact that despite it all and everything she said sam still had this photo pinned — hidden, but never removed — on the wall of her workshop 🥲
the way she melted into that embrace oh mother mary i know what you are 👁️🫦👁️
just the way Mother Mary looked at Sam when she said she hasn't listened to her music since their divorce falling out like... silently wanting to scream because she wrote those songs for you Sam every single one of those songs was for you. calling out to you, seeking you and you never listened a single one? not one word? the devastation that the root of her entire life's work was for nothing like... believing that if she just wrote the right song, toiled tirelessly then she could get her back. make amends. reach her finally but no song would ever fix it because she wasn't listening... god when that realization hits her it's just... GODDDD this movie just gets me.
Treated ourselves to a viewing of Mother Mary last weekend. Loved it! I go feral for stories about the bitter separation of formerly co-dependent collaborators and this elevates the genre, tbh.
Mary and the red fabric are some of the most compelling images of the movie for me. I wanted to try to capture that sense of otherworldly beauty. I feel like there's another version of this wanting to be painted that's even looser and flowier, but for a memory in my sketchbook I'm content with this.
people are like “what did you want from mother mary?? a concert film???” but i would 100% watch a mother mary concert film for the record
GO FUCKING SEE MOTHER MARY!!!!!!!
DO IT!!!!! DO IT RIGHT NOW!!!!!!
IF YOU LOVE LESBIANS, CHARLIE XCX, LADY GAGA'S MAYHEM AND BORN THIS WAY ALBUMS, CATHOLIC IMAGERY, WITCHY SHIT, COSTUMES THAT LOOK LIKE THEY COULD HAVE BEEN MADE BY ROBERT WUN, THE SUSPIRIA REMAKE, FKA TWIGS, ANNIE MOTHER MARY FUCKING HATHAWAY;
THAN GO FUCKING SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!!
impatiently waiting for more people of taste to watch mother mary so we can discuss the fantastic staging and how both sam and mary are babygirls. sam's doing so so SO well all she had to do was drastically alter her entire life and live on constant alert and become a hermit to find peace. mary's a songwriter who struggles to string a full sentence together if it involves expressing any of her own personal feelings. she's so bad at it that listening to the tie-in album is practically required in order to fully understand her beyond the obvious (gay gay homosexual gay)
