DUSTIN WONG - THE BIG SHE

Experimental guitarist Dustin Wong just recently put out Toropical Circlewith Takako Minekawa on PLANCHA, yet he already has another release in the works. Mediation of Ecstatic Energy will be Wong's third solo work, and it's an album that showcases his fondness for playing with textures above all else. His newest single from this release, "The Big She," combines seemingly mismatched elements. Industrial thuds, psychedelic guitar tinkering, droning vocals, and random sections of drumming all turn up at one point or another, preventing the listener from getting comfortable with any particular riff, and ultimately creating a sound that defiantly subverts pop structuring.

Mediation of Ecstatic Energy will be released by Thrill Jockey on September 17.

Artist of the Week: Ben Horns

Ben Horns received his BFA from MICA in 2011 and is based in New York, NY. He has participated in group shows at Foxy Production, NY, Yvon Lambet Paris, Signal Gallery, Brooklyn, and 1dM, Chicago, IL. 

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do. I was raised in a suburb of Chicago called La Grange. I moved to Baltimore in 2008 to go to school at MICA. Since graduating in 2011, I’ve been living and working in New York. I make abstract paintings.

How did your interest in art begin? My mom and skateboarding. 

If you had to explain your work to a stranger, what would you say? I think of the paintings I make as having the same relationship that a shadow has to the person casting it—a form of indexicality. 

I make paintings that say the name Thomas, in most of these paintings it is somewhat difficult to see that it says that name. The name is subliminal or disguised within the paint. The beginning of these paintings coincided with a relationship formed with someone named Thomas and the realization that painting can acquire personhood. Thomas moved away and the paintings carry out my fantasy of him as well as a desire to make visible the personhood of a painting. 

I also make paintings using patterned fabric, sheets of cardboard to create black and white monoprints, and bleach to dye the fabric. The fabric support for these paintings is a sort of readymade material—it begins in the world outside of my studio and outside of painting. The marks and gestures in these paintings are indexical—like a shadow or a footprint.           

What materials do you use in your work and what is your process like? I use a broad range of materials. My paintings often use found or readymade materials: patterned fabric, cardboard, bleach, and zippers in some more recent ones. When I want to paint the name Thomas I’ll use oil, dyes, acrylic, or spray paint. I also make drawings.

My process is experimental and pretty scattered. Discovery in the process coincides with self-discovery and self-discovery is essential to the paintings. Therefore it’s crucial that the work and the pace changes pretty frequently—unpredictability is important. Some paintings move very fast and may only require a few steps, while others take months and undergo revisions. I like to work on both the floor and wall or sometimes on my roof. My time in the studio can be pretty physical and active, or it can be a lot of just sitting and looking. 

What artists are you interested in right now? Marsden Hartley, Joanne Greenbaum, Arakawa and Gins, Jasper Johns, Thorton Dial, Charline Von Heyl, Stanley Whitney, Isa Genzken.

What was the last exhibition you saw that stuck out to you? William Pope.L at the Renaissance Society.

  What is your snack/beverage of choice when working in your studio? Coffee in the morning and beer in the evening. 

What are you really excited about right now? Getting several stitches removed from my finger, nighttime during the summer, and completing renovations on my studio.

Any current or upcoming shows we should know about? Max Guy is organizing a show in September which I’ll have some work in. I’ll be in a group show in November at Brand New Gallery. I’m also working towards a two person show with Eric Mack that will be sometime next year at Elaine Levy Project.

What are you listening to right now? Plastikman, Autechre, Jimi Hendrix, Don Cherry, Elvin Jones, and the Ghost Dog soundtrack.

Andrew Liang was born in Taichung, Taiwan and moved with his family to Dallas, Texas at age 13. Andrew moved to Baltimore, Maryland to attend the Maryland Institute College of Art where he currently works as an Exhibitions Preparator and continues his studio practice during moonlight hours. The writings and drawings of Kazuo Umezu, Junji Ito, Haruki Murakami, and Akira Toriyama have influenced him a great deal. Aside from studio pursuits, Andrew co-directs an artist run art space, the Current Gallery, with his dear friends Monique Crabb and Michael Benevento.
