Hi! My names Elena and I'm a blind high school student who is currently looking into being an audio engineer! I just stumbled across your vids while doom scrolling at approximately 5:51am (yes I have a slight problem...) and was wondering how you got into the industry! From what I've seen in your vids, your job honestly looks like my dream lol and if it isn't too much of a bother, I would love to know any tips on getting into this line of work! I'm really curious about post secondary schooling since that's what I'm looking to do after high school! Even if you don't get a change to reply, I also wanted to just say that I love your vids about working in audio, sometimes it's hard finding people who share the small things at work so I appreciate your vids!
I loved my TikTok for a long time, but with the roller coaster of January 2025 possible ban, I chose to step away from the platform.
That being said, I do still love my job as an audio engineer. I got into it by being relentless with calls and emails to various studios. I also started when I was in high school! The guy who hired me for my first industry job (a summer internship position) said something to the effect of, “If you were dedicated enough to contact us like that, you clearly want this enough to stick around.” It’s proven to be very true!
Little tips for getting your foot in the door:
Get in touch with post production studios near you! If you start by asking for a job/internship/apprenticeship they might shut you out all together, so say you wanna get coffee, ask some questions, or get a tour of their space! It’s a great starting place.
ProTools is the industry standard for DAWs right now. They do offer educational licenses/downloads with proof of school enrollment which is a huge help for accessibility.
Davinci Resolve, which is technically a video software, is free and has an integrated audio editing software called “Fairlight.” Davinci has a very user friendly interface & can be a great place to start playing around with edits!
Garbage in equals garbage out. Get a decent mic! Shure has some really great ones that can plug right into your phone or computer, letting you skip the stress of an audio interface when you’re just staring out. I got a Shure MV88 as one of my first mics and I was able to learn a ton about proper recording environments, good mic placement, and other lessons just from recording at home!
As for secondary education, I actually dropped out of high school entirely and got my GED. So don’t feel too tethered to a formal education path. I did end up going to college and getting a degree, just not the usual order of operations. Even with that, all of my most important lessons for audio were either learned through shadowing sessions with other engineers, or through panic and accidental discovery! The joys of creative fields!
While on socials I usually just share the highlights or laughs, there will be hard projects, there will be long hours, there will be clients that suck and deadlines that feel impossible. The old angry audio engineer is a stereotype for a reason, I fear. That being said! In my experience, enthusiasm & determination can overcome almost any setback or disadvantage when you’re at the very beginning. If it is a persist dream, then it is absolutely worth chasing.
