Ruby Sokova you will always be famous to me
Going back in time to fight the GL90 writers for the way Jennie was written a lot of the time
Next batch is JSA !! Wahoo :]
Quick drawing of Jade. With her not in the Nu52 there is a definite void of green complexioned heroes in the DCU!

happy pride from the JLI 🌈
Like okay she literally wore a bow on her space helmet. How could anyone hate her
the shade is the most respectful of the flash villains that want to fuck them. he longs from afar and is constantly looking at jay and wishing he could be with him but canonically he’s like but alas i cannot take him from his wife :( this is a life no friend would ask him to leave :( meanwhile. eobard.
im a big advocate for stripe mike but im an even bigger advocate for stripe mike in a baby carrier on pat stripe
I get that a lot of these comics writers are just working on team books without giving every individual character much particular thought, that's how it works, but sometimes their seemingly inadvertent choices add up to characterization that's surprisingly consistent with the lore.
I'm in the middle of note-taking on all of Rick Tyler's appearances (for reference/fic writing purposes, I do this for a lot of characters because how else am I supposed to remember all that), and what's staying fairly consistent across these is that he tends to be the one making sure everyone around him is okay. Checking up on everyone. Making sure the injured get cared for. Easily stepping into the role of Team Dad for the younger JSA members. Keeping everyone safe, even if it means directly endangering himself. Basic hero stuff, sure, but with him it has a specific flavor of caretaking.
And along with this comes a habit of downplaying whatever's going on with him. Never mind about his personal woes--let's talk about a teammate's love life! Just been stabbed? Time to get quippy. His team's medic wants to have a serious talk with him about substance abuse? Distract her with awkward flirting! When he's terminally ill, he's more worried about his dad not getting rest by sitting up with him all night, or how upset his mom is when their house gets vandalized.
Which makes a lot of sense as behavior for someone who grew up in a chaotic household, the only child of parents who were both emotionally volatile, struggling with their fractured relationship and their addictions, not having much time for him. Of course he'd learn to look after everyone else constantly. Of course he'd learn to keep up a light-hearted front. He still rebels against his dad, but he doesn't take up the mantle out of spite--he's drawn to the sense of purpose that helping others gives him (and...other aspects of the role, but that's another discussion).
And I'll guarantee you that most writers were not taking that into consideration, but...somehow they tend to end up there.

i love that everyone who's ever been on the jla greatly admires j'onn and considers him a close and trustworthy friend. like, he left for space and they immediately tried to build a giant statue of him near the washington monument. i really don't understand the perception of him as someone cold and "removed" from everyone else because in every comic i read with him in it he's always the warm and stalwart presence that the others believe in and confide in. he loves the world and wants to be a part of it and it just so happens that his grief and kindness and alienness come hand in hand with each other.
i open a comic. i go “she wouldn’t do that.” i close that comic. i open a comic. i go “get this writer off of this solo run immediately.” i close that comic. i open a comic. i go “is it that hard to see women as people.” i close that comic. i open a comic. i go “this issue is beautifully written and illustrated, i’m so glad this is one of my hobbies!” i close that comic. i open a comic
Top ten dumbest things that have ever happened in a Geoff Johns comic GO
where do i even start. i hate literally all of it. i've read just about everything he's ever written for both the flash and green lantern and truly i have fucking suffered for it. anyway, here's the list in ascending order from little it pissed me off to apocalyptic levels of fury.
1. trial of barry allen arc retcon
the rule of thumb about geoff johns' is that he must sanctify his favorite characters to behave as cops do which means that all the beautiful amibiguity in the trial arc where barry was incredibly volatile and insecure over his own morality and 'righteousness' as a hero because he couldn't simplistically defend his own actions when he killed eobard has disappeared under the statement: oh yeah no he was perfectly justified. dw about it. which also affects wally's own role in that arc and altogether cheapens the entire trial. but this is such a small change that i'm really the only person who gives a fuck about it.
2. martin jordan was actually a good father
i love my father says the post-parallax hal. shut the fuck uppppp man your father was at BEST an uncomfortable presence that severely affected your emotional regulation and who parallels you with carol ferris and her OWN relationship to her father. you have DADDY ISSUES because he hit you and humiliated you and made you feel scared. debase yourself at the alter of your father because he sucks and you want his approval (which ftr is an impossible request) and not because he was the Best Man Ever that you cannot ever live up to. #bringbackchildabuse
3. barry allen origin retcon
MAKE HIM LAME. make him lame omfgggggggg. like it's not THAT annoying because of rebirth but i think that such a drastic change in barry's backstory warps so much of the context surrounding his actions and personality that it's just. not good. but it's here to stay and i'm learning to live with it lol.
4. barry only made friends with hal because he was a cop
yeah no need to elaborate it's all in the subtitle.
5. the rehabilitated rogues were actually all brainwashed
do you think it's possible for people to do better? no fuck you criminality is innate and inert and the seed of evil that exists in the hearts of all humanity is never to be exorcised. all of the rogues are BAD PEOPLE. which has always been true but now they're bad people in the dramaticized way that i want them to be and as such NOT LAME. except for the woman the woman is less inherently bad than her alcoholic brother when previously it was the other way around. also trickster's in the fbi now. just making shit up as i feel like it. here's the top isn't he awesome now.
6. wally's open identity gets erased
one of the most defining traits of wally's run is that he doesn't have a secret identity and there are a number of really fascinating reasons as to why but not only did geoff johns' take that away but he also regresses wallylinda's relationship back to the fucking stone ages. i'm in hell forever and always.
7. john stewart was in the military
let's make this really cool and complicated black character and funnel him into the military for no apparent reason. yeah man that's awesome. have you sucked any boots lately.
8. linda quits her job
feminism loses womenfolk should all play second fiddle to the men and children in their lives and also their ambitions and previous characterizations are irrelevant to this gendered domesticity. like i s2g everytime johns' writes a women she is always subject to some heinous bullshit to emphasize the bad awful evilness of whomever is targeting the Male Hero this time around. that linda ever even considered becoming a stay-at-home mom is ludicrous.
9. parallax retcon
i don't even want to talk about it.
10. HIS FUCKING POLITICS
i love cops. i love when superheroes as act as cops. i love an inability to conclude plots or characters arcs because i cannot accept a reality different from the one where badness is equivalent to the written law. ask me about criminality and i am sure to respond with a coherent and well-thought out argument. i'm going to kms.
The thing about Big Barda and Cassandra cains relationship is that there is a lot more emotions on Bardas side then on Casses.
Cass gets along with Barda because they are fairly kindred in their love of fighting, their wilfulness and their shared traumas. She likes that barda is so expressive and open and also an older adult who never demeans her.
But for barda its like: there is this girl who is one of like 3 people in the universe who understand you and she is small and deeply kind and empathetic in ways you lack because she wasn't broken in the way you were. And she is also a warrior who moves fluidly and fights gently (Like Auralie) and is tricky and clever (like Scott) and you HAVE to protect her because she is beautiful and nice and young and everything that was taken from you and you are only just regaining.
