Happy Stabby Day! 🔪 In March I ponder upon Brutus, specifically the Roman aristocratic culture surrounding him and how it may have shaped his decisions. Yapping below.

Marcus Junius Brutus belonged to the Junii, a family whose ancestor Lucius Junius Brutus (died c. 500 BCE) was said to have overthrown Rome’s last king and founded the Republic. That was the family legacy. Elite Romans especially took ancestry very seriously. Aristocratic households displayed wax death masks (imagines) on ceremonial occasions and to impress guests.

So imagine being Marcus Junius Brutus. Every day you walk past the faces of your forefathers. Your most legendary ancestor is the man who expelled kings from Rome. Now Julius Caesar has just been declared dictator for life.

Considering how powerful Roman ideas about family legacy were, the choice to assassinate Caesar might have felt almost inevitable. If he allows another king to rise, is he a Brutus at all? I'm not saying that was his only motive, but perhaps a part of it was trying to live up to a narrative written centuries before he was born.
