     She pulls herself back into a seated position, her weight      settling between her knees and Natasha’s hips. The faint      smile at the corners of her lips betrays the fact that she’s      not half as annoyed as she wants to look. “I’m not that little.”

“You’re kind of little. But you don’t need to be that tiny to be a perfect size for carrying. I’m pretty strong.” She toys with the hem of Jamie’s T-shrt. “You didn’t seem to mind.”

     “Yeah, that’s cause I got distracted by how pretty you always      look.” Her eyes drifted down to watch Natasha’s slender      fingers play with her shirt, and for a moment she wished the      shirt was gone so she could see what else those fingers would      play with. At that same moment, she pulled Natasha up,      gently, by her waist. “C’mere. You have any idea how pretty      you always are?”

     She tried to quickly lock it back into place, proving that the      last thing she needed was help with the arm that she had      been working with for some 60 years or so. But the last little      connector in the back was always difficult.

“Yeah, maybe you’re right.” Natasha always was. It just wasn’t a truth Bucky was prepared to accept—-maybe she was weak in that aspect. She wanted to believe that if she loved someone, they would be in her life, and if they didn’t want to be in her life, she wouldn’t love them anymore.

She was naive.

“You know we’re different Jamie.” She couldn’t help but look away. “You know how hard it is for me to let people in.” She gave a quick glance back at Jamie. “And when I do…well, they’re always there. I can’t just let go of that. In one form or another they’ll always be there. Whether they decide they want to be a part of mine or not.” She gave her a sad smile.

It was a sad smile that curled her lips, and Bucky found it harder and harder to keep her eyes on or anywhere near Natasha. “I don’t think we’re that different.” If they were, this whole mess would have been a lot different. “Thanks for trying to help, though.”
