my hc for how max's version of events went down is that he definitely tried to go down with sam/take himself out too but i feel like sybil was involved in helping him set up explosives/ and he realised too late that she'd be in the crossfire with them and so has to change his tactics

especially since 305 already shows max's concern for sybil id like to think what stops him wouldn't be sam saving max (though that idea is SO sad and makes me weep) but max realising sybils worth and knowing sam would hate for her to die too
