pedestrians don't seem to realize how exhausting using a wheelchair is, both manual and powered. i had to wheel around a hospital today with several ramps i had to go up and down multiple times, and even with my smoov i ended up with shoulder and chest pain and deep exhaustion.

people look at wheelchair users and think "well you're sitting down all the time that doesn't take effort" no actually it does. pushing a manual chair takes a lot of fucking effort, especially without a power assist. repetitive stress injuries are a huge problem manual chair users encounter all the time. going up hills and ramps is so deeply fatiguing.

this doesn't just apply to manual chair users btw. power chair usage can also be really exhausting, especially for people with complex seating needs. going over bumps and cracks can trigger many symptoms such as spasticity, pressure sores are common, even just sitting upright can be exhausting for many people.

basically don't assume using a wheelchair takes 0 effort, it really really does. getting to "sit down all the time" doesn't mean it's easy.

literally ok so not a funny story but kind of funny? when I was nine I encountered rape in a book and I was like hey mom what’s this mean and she explained it and I was like oh. gross. and then like two weeks later a girl on the bus abruptly disclosed her csa and we were all like ????? what ???? but I was like wait hang on there’s a word for that ☝️🤓 and explained what it meant and that it was illegal and that you could talk to a teacher or my mom if it had happened to you and everyone was like ohhhhh I see I see and very somberly comforted the girl (she was safe she was removed from her home and living with my neighbor at the time so it wasn’t Urgent)

the truly evil part about lolcowing is that the targets are almost always people who have done something/things that are unsavory at best or objectively harmful at worst and that is used as justification to treat them however you want with no recourse whatsoever. like you suddenly have permission to dehumanize someone for what, fucking entertainment. and if anyone tells you to cool it for a minute, suddenly they're supportive of that behavior, making you effectively immune to anyone who disagrees. like apparently nobody's ever heard of disproportionate punishment

as a longtime self-effacing individual, I can tell you that it's deeply uncomfortable for folks when you denigrate yourself by measuring yourself against them. To them it'll almost feel like you're using their accomplishments or qualities as a weapon for hurting yourself, punishing them for having that quality you admire. Probably dont do that

I need you young people to know it was almost never this hot when I was a child. Millennials and Gen Xers are all nostalgic and excited about summer because it was about ten to twenty degrees cooler to experience it back then!

I cannot express to you how FAST it has gone. I grew up in a world that does not exist now. We're starting on the path to reverse it, globally. You might not know how much solar has EXPLODED in the last decade or two. It's gone from a side thing, a weirdo novelty that was just Not Viable... to whole countries investing in infrastructure. but we have to keep fighting big oil and fascism everywhere we can in order to keep on this road to a new better less scorching burning earth.

He and his family had also been part of ICE resistance, btw. Which I can not over-emphasize is the norm in much of the extended metro right now. The degree to which every rando you meet probably did at least a little something is very very high.

Did another one. Another exburb that has traditionally been pretty white, pretty NIMBY. We were deciding whether to endorse an un-opposed democrat running out there.

She's one of the thousands of environmental scientists fired by the current regime, with a history in international diplomacy, running on a ecological justice platform. On making sure the environment is protected and the most vulnerable be first protected. She could name those vulnerable populations without mincing words of flinching. She loves landback and mass transit and helping voters vote.

She's going to win this big chunk of midwestexburbia.

And, again, she was key in her area at ICE resistance. This has become next to a prerequisite for running in Minnesota, now.

I want you to think about that.

Resistance to a federal agency as a key prerequisite to holding state office. We keep seeing it. People want to know- people ask- when we and our neighbors were in danger, what did you do about it?

I am gonna keep saying it- the democratic party belongs to the people who show up to steer it. So show up. Not just once every 4 years. Every time. Every chance you get. It's free. It's important. It needs you. Caucus. Vote in local elections. Go to town halls. Hell, run for something! She wasn't in politics 6 months ago and she's gonna win! Grab that steering wheel in your own hands and pull.
