Hey guys, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with liking an antagonistic character. in fact, some of the greatest antagonists in fiction are compelling precisely because they’re cruel, obsessive, vindictive, selfish, or otherwise morally bankrupt. that’s the point. they create friction. they move the story. they challenge the protagonists. they’re fascinating because they aren’t trying to be admirable. what i think fandom sometimes struggles with is the idea that enjoying a character and justifying a character are two completely different things. not every villain or antagonist needs a hidden heart of gold, an elaborate moral defence, or a tragic reinterpretation that softens every sharp edge. sometimes the text intends for them to be exactly what they are. If you constantly have to excavate excuses, rewrite motivations, create interpretations by grasping at straws, or sand away the parts that make them wholly antagonistic in order to feel comfortable liking them, you may be engaging with a version of the character that exists more in fandom than in the work itself.

it’s okay to enjoy awful people in fiction. they’re fictional. they’re often brilliantly written. but part of appreciating good storytelling is allowing characters to fulfil the role they were written to fulfil, rather than insisting every one of them be secretly misunderstood. sometimes the bad guy is simply the bad guy—and that’s what makes them memorable.
