nancy wheeler is such a good character actually I wish the fandom didn't reduce her to love triangle or good with guns
like. imagine you're nancy wheeler and you're fifteen years old. you start dating a boy in the year above who's cute and funny and popular. he's got a bit of a bad boy reputation and his friends are assholes but he's sweet to you
your best friend does not like him but you're tired of being the good girl all the time. you convince her to come to his party with you even though you know she doesn't want to. you know she's miserable but the boy is cute and funny and you want this so you tell her to go home
and then she goes missing. while you're having sex for the first time she goes missing from right outside his bedroom window
and suddenly everyone from your mom to the incompetent police deputy to that loner boy in your class with the missing brother is telling you that this isn't how good girls behave. This Isn't You
(the last thing she ever said to you)
and so you think it's your fault but you're determined to find her because if you could just get her back you could make everything right
but then you find out she died. horribly. alone.
the loner boy gets his brother back but your best friend is gone forever
and you carry that guilt and grief with you wherever you go. you break up with the cute funny popular boy because you can't forgive him and you can't forgive yourself. you start dating the loner boy but eventually you keep him at a distance, too. you keep everyone at a distance - your brother, your parents, what few friends you have. you get good and uncovering the truth when powerful people want it to stay hidden, and you practice and practice with a gun until you're confident you can use it to keep your people safe
you make yourself hard and cold when you have to be because that's what it takes to survive
and then you're twenty, and your little sister gets taken. your parents are nearly killed, and your brother is left grieving. you did all that, and in the end none of it mattered, because you still couldn't protect them
hi guys its my first post since august 2025 who missed me.. 👀

the rolling tray sits on the coffee table.
“c’mere,” nancy says, giggling, her head slightly tilted back. “get up- come, come stand here,” she points in front of where she was sitting on the couch. robin blinks slowly, looking up at her from where she was laying. also on the couch. “you want me to get up? i dont wanna get up..” “robbie, robbie, come stand right here,” robin giggles, sluggishly rolling off the couch and getting to her feet. “oh my god, my- my knees are like, like, wobbly,” she stammers, waddling only a few steps to stand in front of nancy. nancy sits up slightly, grinning up at robin. she points at the floor. “down.”
robin grins all lopsided, slowly getting to her knees, her hands automatically finding their place behind her back. she laughs, looking up at nancy. “awh..” nancy reaches out, running a hand through robin’s hair as the other cups her cheek. “you look so cute.” robin’s eyes were all squinty as she holds back laughter, leaning her face into nancy’s palm. both of their face’s were flushed, warm to the touch. “your hands are kinda cold,” robin licks her lips, trying to moisten them, but her mouth was dry. nancy doesn’t say anything, her hands continuing to feel over robins scalp and face. her fingers brush along robin’s cheekbone, her thumb tugging her lower lip down a smidge. her nails scratch along robin’s scalp, slightly messing up her hair.
robin’s eyes gradually squint less, fading into a more half-lidded state. she looks up at nancy, her smile slowly leaving and getting replaced with a slightly nervous look. nancy grins wider. “what?” “you what..” nancy laughs, tilting robin’s head up further. her left hand leaves robin’s cheek, moving down, her nails lightly scratching along her neck. robin purses her lips. her arms go slack behind her back, knuckles slightly grazing the floor as she sits back on her ankles. “robin.” “yeah?” robin’s eyes re-focus slightly on nancy’s face, and they make eye contact. “your eyes are pink.” robin giggles. “your pupils are huge.” nancy laughs along with her. robin leans forward, moving her head to the side and resting her cheek on the inside of nancy’s thigh. her breath fans over the gray, soft fabric of nancy’s sweatpants.
nancy purses her lips, letting out a quiet huff. her heart was beginning to thud. “do you wanna take these off of me?” she murmurs, her smug confidence wavering slightly. “..right now?” robin’s eyes never leave nancy’s. she blinks slowly. nancy nods. “yeah.” her voice was slightly breathy. “yeah, right now.” robin swallows down nothing, struggling to make saliva in her mouth. she clears her dry throat. “yeah. um.” her eyes were wider, her slack body tensing up slightly. her arms awkwardly leave her back, her hands coming up to rest on nancy’s knees. her hands slide up nancy’s thighs, slightly bunching up the fabric as she goes. her hands slide under the hem of nancy’s tank top, brushing her waist. nancy flinches. “your hands are the cold ones!” she scolds. “sorry,” robin looks a bit embarrassed, her fingers tensing as they lift off of nancy’s body. “no- stop. they’ll warm up.” robin nods, her fingers curling around the rolled up waistband of nancy’s sweats, slowly starting to tug them down. nancy’s hips were slender, and as robin tugged down her pants she revealed the white lacy panties nancy was wearing atop them.
nancy lets out a shaky breath, looking down at robin. she leans back into the couch, trying to get comfortable. robin’s heart was pounding out of her chest. she had never done anything like this before, but nancy didn’t know that. so she was trying her hardest to act like she knew what she was doing and she had everything under control, while she was high out of her mind. her hands were shaking. she was so out of it, like everything was going so fast and so slow at the same time. she felt like her vision was blurring at the ends. nancy raises her hips, helping robin pull down her pants until they’re discarded on the floor next to robin. she gulps, bringing a hand to her mouth and starting to chew on her fingernail. robin clears her throat, her hands awkwardly hovering over nancy’s pale thighs. she felt like the silence had gone on too long, she had to say something, but she didn’t know what. “you..” her mind filters through every compliment she knew, trying figure out which one was best for the mood. “you’re really.. b.. you look really good. um.” her eyes nervously flick up to nancy’s. nancy was nervous too. she didn’t know what to say either. “you look good too. i like you in this position..” she mumbles, her eyes leaving robin’s after a moment of staring at eachother.
robin feels her heartrate spike at that, she was starting to sweat. her thumb drags along the lace, carefully feeling every intricate stitch. robin leans forward, placing a gentle kiss right above her panties. she moves her head down, starting to kiss along the inner of nancy’s left thigh. her hands rest on the top of her thighs. “robin,” “yeah?” robin pauses, worried she was doing something wrong. “please,” nancy’s hand moves to the back of robin’s head, finger’s threading through her blonde hair. she leads robin’s head closer, closer. “here.” robin’s eyes widen slightly. “right. right, sorry,” she clears her throat, taking the hint to get on with things. her fingers hook into nancy’s underwear, and she slowly starts to pull it down. her eyes constantly flick from between nancy’s thighs to her face, gauging her reaction, every twitch of her brow, trying to catch any hint of doubt.
robin tries not to look too starstruck as nancy’s panties are fully discarded, but she can’t help the wavered breath that leaves her. nancy chews her lower lip, watching robins reaction. her hand comes down to cup robin’s cheek, tilting her head up. their eyes meet, but neither of them say anything. they don’t have to. the look in eachothers eyes is reassuring enough for the other. robin licks her lips, before her eyes leave nancy’s. she dips her head down, starting to kiss along nancy’s thighs again, getting closer with each peck. nancy keeps her hand in robins hair, feeling the butterflies swarm in her stomach.
robin’s blue eyes flick up to nancy’s one last time before she lays her tongue flat against nancy’s pussy, licking a slow stripe up the middle. nancy’s breath hitches, slightly startled at the sudden contact. robin lifts one of nancy’s thighs over her arm to rest atop her shoulder, and she leans closer. her tongue moves slowly up and down a few times, getting used to the feel and the taste. nancy’s brows furrow, and she bites the inside of her cheek. robin starts to find her rhythm, tugging nancy’s hips closer. nancy lifts her hips, starting to grind against robins mouth. “robin, higher,” she whimpers, her head falling back. robin almost jumps at the sound of nancy’s soft voice moaning out her name. she adjusts instantly, moving her mouth higher, pressing her tongue against nancy’s clit. “oh-! there, there, fuck!” nancy moves a hand over her face, trying to keep quiet as her voice gets all high pitched and whiny. robin’s thighs press together, desperately chasing her own pleasure as she starts to suck on nancy’s clit. nancy tenses up with a gasp, her nails digging into robin’s scalp.
robin’s eyes flick up to nancy’s face, her own brows furrowed in pleasure as she listens to nancy moan. her mind was racing. she didn’t necessarily know what she was doing, but she knew it must’ve been something right. her hand that wasn’t holding nancy’s hip fumbles to slide into her own boxers. she whimpers against nancy’s pussy, her eyes squinting in pleasure. “keep doing that, oh, please, m’gonna cum,” robin does just as nancy says, continuing whatever technique she was doing at the moment. she presses forward, pushing more pressure onto nancy’s clit as she grinds against robin’s tongue. robin’s fingers rub herself frantically, wanting to finish at the same time as nancy. nancy groans against her hand. “robbie- i-i’m-“ nancy cuts herself off with a moan as she cums. robin watches through blurry eyes as nancy’s body tenses up with pleasure, her own orgasm following soon after. nancy slumps into the couch, panting, and robin slumps against her thigh.
nancy looks down at robin, moving her hair out of her face. they stare at eachother, flushed and debauched, panting. nancy lets her head fall back, staring at the ceiling as she catches her breath. robin eventually leans back, wiping her mouth. she stares up at nancy silently, watching her gather herself, waiting patiently like she didnt want to move without nancy giving her the ok. and she does. she reaches out, grabbing robins shoulder. “come up here.. lay down with me..” robin climbs back onto the couch, laying down. nancy lies down on top of robin, nuzzling into her neck. robin nervously wraps her arms around nancy. “..was that.. good?” she mumbles, quiet so as not to break the tension between them. nancy smiles, tired and pleased. “yeah, baby. that was good.” she whispers. “cool. cool. cool. yeah, um.. good.” robin nods slightly, her arms tightening around nancy.
okay look i don’t even dislike steddie by any means. i never really go actively searching for it but i see people ship it and im like yk what hell yeah. what i do dislike is how it infiltrates EVERY SHIP on tumblr and ao3. it does not matter what ship i am searching up fics for. steddie is there, 9/10 times the main focus of majority of the fics. it’s so frustrating because i don’t want to block the ship from the search, because i don’t mind if its in there, but im tired of searching up fics and the ship is tagged but its like 90% steddie. ronance, a ship between two characters who have a lot of chemistry, who the actors ship, who’s connection is important to their arcs platonic or romantic, overshadowed by a ship that got some vaguely flirty lines and a few minutes of screen time. and part of me wonders how much of it is because of the fact that it’s two men vs two women. i want to reiterate that this is not a steddie hate post. its more so how it’s treated in the fandom that annoys me. like pls. put it to rest
my first actual fanfic! this wasn’t gonna be a fanfic at first i just wanted to write something sad, but i just couldn’t think of any other names than robin and nancy so here we are. lol
if im being so honest this is like really out of character (because i wasn’t planning on it being ronance at first) but i hope you still enjoy it!
this entire fic is sad. do not except to be happy. ~3,300 words, not proofread

the door gently clicks behind robin. her eyes were pink with weed, the joint inbetween her fingers. she stubs it out on the bathroom counter as she locks the door behind her. “nancy..” she starts, but gets cut off. “get the fuck out.” nancy was kneeling at the toilet, puking her guts out. she had drank way too much for one night. like usual. “get the fuck out, robin. i don’t want you h- hh-“ she begins to heave again, and robin is by her side in a second. “hey, i got you.” robin gathers nancy’s curls, usually soft but now stringy and unkept. robin gently ties her hair in a ponytail.
her hand rubs her back, trying to comfort her. “i’m here.” she murmurs. robin knew she should go. shouldn’t spend another night like this. another night taking care of nancy when she could be out actually enjoying herself in the party. dancing with her friends and maybe finding a girlfriend. someone who loved her, cared about her. not like whatever her and nancy were. nancy finishes this round of puking and sits back, slumping against the bathtub wall as she sobs. she looked like shit. snot running down her upper lip, saliva and puke down her chin, tears and mascara down her flushed cheeks. “i hate you,” she sobs. “leave me alone.”
robin’s heart twists. “i know. i know. but i can’t leave you alone like this. you’re way too fucked up.” robin grabs some toilet paper, gently wiping off the various fluids from nancy’s face. they used to be just friends, her and nancy. best friends. but it all changed after a single make-out session. robin had been in love with nancy for so long, and when they finally kissed it felt like heaven. but for nancy it was different. the kiss blossomed a bunch of emotion in her heart, but they weren’t all good.
things became complicated between them, because nancy’s world had flipped. she had her entire life planned out. graduate college with her degree in journalism, move to new york and become a famous journalist, writing articles about various topics. she wanted to do it all. report on local news, food, events, celebrities, everything. she would be amazing. and her husband would be amazing too. it wouldn’t be johnny or steve, she knew deep down neither of those would last. but it would be a husband, and he would be perfect. maybe a construction worker, with a nice body and hardworking heart. or.. an accountant, or something. that made good money.
but when her and robin kissed, planting the idea that the person in her future might be a girl, it ruined her. because now she wasn’t perfect. now she was stained with these.. thoughts. these thoughts that kept her up at night, about being disgusting, a sinner, a failure to her family. how could she give her parents grandchildren if she was a dyke? the funny thing was that her family wasn’t even all that religious, but ever since her and robin got.. weird, she couldn’t stop thinking about hell. after all, almost everyone in hawkins was religious. and if she didn’t go to hell she would be shunned by her entire community.
nancy started to party more. sweet nancy who would usually pick studying or writing over going out turned into a party girl. robin didn’t join her at the parties at first, but steve had brought her along one time. and then nancy had dragged her away, brought her to an empty room. the first time they fucked was sloppy. robin was barely buzzed and nancy was wasted. robin knew it wasn’t a good idea, but when the girl of her dreams was throwing herself at her, it was hard to say no. and for nancy, the booze helped her forget. helped her forget her life plan, her future husband and kids, helped her forget the stupid town that would cast her aside if they found out she liked a girl, helped her forget her fears of hell, helped her forget her own self-hatred for falling in love with robin buckely.
in the morning, nancy was horrified with herself. she left immediately after waking up, leaving robin in a cold bed. and then that just became routine. nancy would go to parties and robin would go with. they would get drunk and fuck and then nancy would ignore robin when she was sober. they went from best friends to pretty much nothing and it broke robin’s heart. but, it gradually moved away from drunk fucking, and more to a sober or slightly buzzed robin taking care of shitfaced nancy. like now.
“you can leave me alone!” nancy hiccups, whining as she swats robin’s hand away from her face. “i’m fine! i can take care of myself!” robin shakes her head, tossing the dirty toilet paper in the toilet before shutting the lid and flushing it. “you can’t even stand, nance. i just- i can’t imagine some- some guy coming in here and..” she trailed off, standing up and shaking her head. she grabs the cup with toothbrushes in it, dumping out the toothbrushes and giving it a quick wash before filling it with water and handing it to nancy. “swish your mouth.” she mumbles.
robin was going through it as well. she didn’t know what to do with herself anymore. her best friend had turned into.. this. they didn’t even talk anymore when nancy was sober. and when nancy was drunk they either had a quick fuck where nancy would leave in the morning, or nancy would be too ruined to see straight and would rely on robin to take care of her. it was torture. she knew she was being used, of course she did, but she had loved nancy for so so long, and she was still her best friend, technically. she figured having just a little bit of nancy was better than none.. but she also knew that was bullshit. she wqs just so scared of being alone. she was with vickie for a few months before vickie cheated on her with her ex, and that messed her up. it was her first relationship. and her second one is.. this. and she was desperate and stupid enough to stay.
nancy reluctantly takes a drink of water, swishing it before spitting it into the bath. “you can go now. i don’t want you here.” nancy’s voice was very very hoarse from all the puking. “well you can’t be alone. do you want me to get steve or something?” robin murmurs. “no!” nancy’s stomach lurched at the mention of steve, and she felt like she might puke again. “okay. then i’m staying.” robin wished that one day nancy would come to terms with her sexuality and love robin freely. or that nancy would just reject robin and then that would be it. they could go back to being friends or they wouldn’t, robin didn’t care at this point. she just wanted nancy back to normal. healthy.
“do you hate me?” nancy whispers, sobbing once more. robin stayed silent. she couldn’t answer that. she didn’t know if she did or not, not anymore. robin searches the cabinets for mouthwash and grabs it from beneath the sink, handing it to nancy. nancy uses the mouthwash, and then continues to cry. “i’m s-sorry. i’m sorry. robin..” she hiccups. “i’m a horrible person.” she brings her knees to her chest, hugging herself. robin sighs, walking over and sitting next to nancy. she places a hand on her knee.
“i’ve done… so many bad things to you.. i- i treat you like shit. and you still keep coming back. wh.. why? why?! can’t you see how f-fucked up that is?! why do you keep coming back to me? taking c-care of me- i- i don’t get it.” robin just listens silently, feeling her own eyes start to well with tears. “i hate you. i hate you. you’re too good to me. i don’t deserve it.” nancy hides her face in her hands. “i hate myself for doing this to you.. t- to us.. i hate it..” “nancy, i promise, we’re gonna get through this.. things will get better.” “shut up!”
nancy continues to sob. robin pulls her into her side, letting her tire herself out. “i’m gonna kill myself.” “no. don’t say shit like that, it scares me.” “..okay. i’m sorry. .. m’not gonna kill myself..” robin lets out a shaky breath, waiting for nancy’s uncontrollable wails to slowly melt down into sad sniffles and whimpers. “are you ready to go home?” she mumbles. “you don’t have to take me home. i can g-get an uber.” “nancy, you know i’m taking you home.” “…thank you.” robin doesn’t answer that. she pulls off her hoodie and puts it on nancy. she pulls the hood over nancy’s head to shield her from the outside world. then she stands, helping nancy to her feet before scooping her up in her arms.
they walk back out into the party, a group of girls immediately rushing into the bathroom after them. robin carries nancy out of the frat house to her car, laying her gently in the passenger seat. she buckles nancy in before heading to the drivers seat herself. she starts up the car, driving to nancy’s apartment. she didn’t live in the dorms, she had an actual apartment with two roommates. robin felt a bit sorry for them.
still, it wasn’t that long of a drive, only 15 minutes. and after only 3 minutes of driving, nancy was snoozing, her head resting against the window.
but a lot can happen in 15 minutes. robin kept looking over to nancy, and her mind started running. she thought about how everything had gone wrong between them, and now they were stuck in this painful, toxic limbo. both of them knew they had to stop it. both of them didn’t know how. robin started to tear up. now that nancy was sleeping she could finally stop holding back her emotions. she bites down on her fist as she starts to sniffle, thinking of everything. of old memories of her and nancy, good ones. and of how even after everything, it still felt so good to sleep with nancy, to hold her close for just a moment.
and then she thought about how her and nancy didn’t even see eachother anymore. not even when they were fucking, because nancy only liked having sex in the pitch black. she didn’t want to look at robin even when she was eating her out. like she was pretending robin was someone else and when she saw her it shattered that dream. she wipes her tears, her eyes squeezing shut. and that was all it took. a split second of uncoordination.
they crashed straight into a large hardwood tree, the front of the car getting crushed around it. robin wasn’t wearing her seatbelt, immediately flying forward. she crashes against the window, her head hitting through the glass, shattering it and knocking her out instantly. then, the airbags go off, immediately redirecting all of robins energy back, crushing her back against the seat with a force that cracks a couple of her ribs, puncturing a lung.
since nancy was sleeping, buckled up and limp, she didn’t suffer as bad. she wakes with a start, feeling a deep ache in her chest and a sharp, unimaginable pain in her leg. “wh- wh-“ her eyes open wide, darting around. the surge of adrenaline sobered her up quick as her brain tries to work out what the fuck just happened. she looks over to robin, and screams. “h-HOLY FUCK! robin, robin, wake up,” nancy reaches out with a whine, shaking robin’s shoulder. “robin, robinrobinrobinrobin, wake up, can you hear me?” nancy was immediately sobbing, unbuckling herself and trying to get to robin.
when robin doesn’t wake up, she scrambles for her phone, calling 911 with a trembling hand. “911 whats ur emergency?” “h-hello? hello?! i- i’m in a- a car. and it crashed! and it crashed and robin is unconscious and i don’t know if she’s dead and i- m-my leg hurts- fuck! please! please send someone i- you need to save robin!” she wails into the phone. “okay, okay, miss, calm down. whats your name?” “n-nancy- b-but, fuck! that doesn’t matter! send someone! please!” “okay, nancy, we’ll send someone as fast as we can. where are you?” nancy rapidly looks around, trying to figure out where they were.
“u-uh- uh,” she tries to see through her tears, eventually spotting a gas station. “we- we’re near the gas station on rice street. i- i think.” “okay. good job. i’m sending people over right now, they’ll be there soon.” “o-okay.” “tell me where you’re hurt.” nancy whimpers, trying to make sense of all of the pain in her body. “m- my leg.. i think it’s broken.” she sobs. “and my chest hurts- b-but- it doesn’t matter! robin- robin is-“ she breaks off with a wail. “okay, okay, it’s okay. people are coming, they’re gonna save your friend. is she breathing?” nancy raises a shaky hand to robin’s nose, trying to feel her breath. “i don’t know! her- her head crashed through the window- she- she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt!”
nancy places her hand on robins neck, trying to feel a pulse. “robin, please wake up. i’m so sorry- th- this is all my fault,” nancy drops her phone, grabbing robin’s face, lightly slapping her. “please. robbie. i need you. i- i love you.” she whispers, feeling like it was the end of the world. “i love you! i love you! god, robin, please don’t leave me! i’m sosss- so sorry, i’ll be better, i’ll do so much better for you, please, please, pleasplespleaseplease,”
the paramedics and the firefighters got there very fast, wrenching open the car with their tools, getting robin and nancy out. nancy was placed on a gurney, two people working on her while every other person went to help robin. “are you okay, miss?” a doctor asks her. “rob- robin- robin,” she begs. “i know. we’re working to save her. don’t worry.” but they couldn’t. robin was already dead when they showed up. a fireman came over to break the news to nancy.
“what?”
the next weeks were a blur. nancy was in the hospital, then she wasn’t. she was in bed, all day. she wouldn’t eat. she wouldn’t speak, she would just cry, holding robin’s band uniform close to her chest. everything was going by so fast, she didn’t know how many days had passed.
she only seemed to regain consciousness at robins funeral. her eyes suddenly growing more alert. she glances around, seeing her friends and family at her side. “steve,” she whispers, grabbing his hand. “wh.. what’s going on?” steve glances over, frowning. “nance.. we’re at robin’s funeral.” he whispers with a heavy heart. “you don’t.. know that? are you okay?” nancy’s heart breaks once more, the memory of the crash rushing back in an instant. she immediately starts to sob once more, her voice weak and quiet. she hides her face in steve’s shoulder, her body shaking. steve wraps his arms around nancy, holding her close. “shh. i know.”
eventually, they lined up to look at the body. nancy didn’t want to. and when she did, she could only look for a second, shaking her head and looking away immediately, hiding her face in steve’s shoulder. “it’s not her. it’s not.” she pleads, and steve nods, gently guiding her to keep walking as he chokes up himself. “i know.”
after the ceremony, people were standing around, making awkward small talk. nancy clung to steve’s arm, when she saw a familiar head of ginger curls standing near the casket. for the first time in a while, nancy felt an emotion other than despair surge through her. rage. she lets go of steve, shakily storming away from him. “nance?” he asks, the rest of the group watching her go. “vickie!” she shouts, shoving vickie from behind.
vickie stumbles forward before turning around, her eyes puffy and red. “wh- nancy? what the- what’s up with you?! why did you push me?!” “y-you fuckinggbITCH!” nancy slaps vickie across the face. “stop fucking crying! you shouldn’t be here! you don’t deserves to mourn robin! y- you didn’t even care about her!” vickie’s head whips to the side, and she gasps, shocked and hurt and offended. “what the fuck is wrong with you?! who are you to say i can or can not mourn her?! i loved her!” “you didn’t love her! you cheated on her! you broke her heart you d- fh- WHORE!” “you’re the reason she’s DEAD!”
the entire church goes silent in an instant. and then there was screaming. punching, hair pulling. nancy was doing most of the attacking, vickie struggling to protect herself. vickie’s boyfriend and steve and johnathan immediately started trying to break up the fight, eventually separating the two ladies. nancy collapses into steve, feeling helpless. “i’m sorry. i’m sorry.” she sobs.
when nancy went back to her apartment that night, she knew she was done. neither of her roommates were home. she knew one of her roommates had a heart problem, and took medication because of it. something like clopidogril, but she didn’t know for sure. what she did know was that it was strong. she opens the door to her roommates room, searching through all of her cabinets before finally finding it with her makeup. nancy lets out a shaky breath, staring at the orange pill bottle. she sits at the sofa, ordering a pizza while she writes a short note to her roommates.
when the pizza comes, she eats almost the entire thing, looking at the half-assed note. “dear jackie and shauna, im sorry i left u guys like this don’t try to open the door, i don’t want you guys to see me like that. i took jackies heart medication, im sorry. -nancy ” she wondered if it was too blunt, but she didn’t care enough to change it. when she was done, she got up, and went to her room. she grabbed everything in there that reminded her of robin, and her cd player, and brought it to the bathroom with her. she taped the note to the bathroom door and then went inside and locked it.
she made a little shrine of robins things, then sat next to it, plugging in the cd player and turning it on. the album “parallel blinds” by blondie starts to play, and nancy opens the pill bottle. her hands were trembling. she began to second guess herself, wondering if she should really go through with it. but then she thought of robin’s sweet smile and how she would never see it again, and it was all her fault. she grits her teeth, throwing back the bottle. but, her attempt to be dramatic failed. she couldn’t swallow that many pills at once. she spits them out into her hand, taking them one by one with a swig of water after each one.
she took about 14 before deciding that was probably enough, then laid down to die peacefully. but she didn’t die peacefully. first was the headache, then the heartache. chills, sweating, shortness of breath, and puking, so much puking. she was coughing up blood and chunks, now wishing that she had just hanged herself instead of choosing to go through this torture. but another part of her felt as if she deserved it. she took the rest of the pills, worried that since she had puked so much it wouldn’t work anymore. but, it worked. nancy died just as the last song on the album, just go away, finished its final lines.

“the nets caught! pull it up! it’s stuck on somethin’, lads!” the captain barked from the mast. in an instant about 15 men scrambled to the wheel that was attached to the net, some pushing it with all their strength as a few other reach overboard and try to grab it. it was mostly out, almost to the edge of the boat, but just a little too far for the men to reach. leslie watches the commotion intently from across the ship as she mops the deck. this was probably the most interesting that had happened on the ship for the last week, so she wanted to take in the little excitement she got from it and savor it.
the captain orders the ship to turn a bit, and suddenly, the net springs loose. a few men who were pushing the wheel stumble and fall on their face. the others begin to spin the wheel, pulling the net onto the deck. there was lots of fish, of course, but there was something else. a real big fish, shiny as steel, colorful like coral. leslie stood on her tippie toes, trying to get a better look over all of the heads.
they eventually untangle the net, and the men all let out surprised gasps and grunts. everyone was crowded over now, and leslie couldn’t see a thing. she drops her mop, running over to the crowd. “what’s going on? aye, let me look!” she gently moves through the crowd. and then she sees what everyone else was seeing. a woman. well, the top half of a woman. the bottom half of a glittery fish. she gasps, her jaw dropping at the sight. a real mermaid.
it was a beautiful creature entangled in the net, her upper half the most attractive woman leslie had ever seen. darker olive skin, green eyes and long brown hair that went down her back. and the bottom half, leslie had never seen such colorful scales that shined off the sun so perfectly before.
but she was scared. she had backed up away from the crowd as much as she could, pressed against the railing of the ship. her eyes were wide, her pupils thin and cat-like, darting around with fear and alertness. leslie’s heart was shot with pity and concern, wanting to protect the mermaid.
“haha! aye, are the lot of you seeing this?” the captain laughs, a loud hearty laugh, one of the man who had struck gold. “a sea creature! a beautiful, sea creature!” the captains grimy eyes dragged across the mermaid’s body, focusing on her bare breasts like everyone else’s eyes did. “aye, i reckon we’ll have a lot of fun tonight, lads.” he grins, toothy and excited. he tugs at his pants. “show a mermaid what a man is. yeah? and then after.. we eat her! i’ll bet eating a mermaid gives you some sort of mythical power, aye?” the pirates cheer, except for leslie. the thought of each of the men on the ship forcing the mermaid to have sex with them and then killing her after sounds like a nightmare. “no!” she shouts.
all eyes turn to leslie. “aye, lad, you jealous you don’t got a dick ‘n you cain’t have intercourse with the mermaid?” leslie’s brows furrow. “no. i just.. don’t think we should do that.” the captains teasing energy immediately turns tense. “and why not?” leslie pauses, now having to think of something on the spot. “b.. because.. we can make so much money off of her! aye, matey, this be a real life mermaid!” the captain pauses, before his grin returns. “what an amazing idea! instead of eating her, we can sell the guts and the scales and the hair and the.. everything!” the captain hollers, the others joining in. “we’ll be rich!”
leslie’s heart stops. “no! i mean like, like.. a.. aye..” she racks her brain before she gets another idea. “this be a real mermaid, a live mermaid! people would pay billions to see it! we can sail the ship from town to town, and charge people to look at her! and we can make fake scales and sell those too, so that she doesn’t have to lose any!” the rest of the pirates glance around, grumbling and discussing the idea, before the captain clasps his hands together loudly. “i love it! amazing idea! aye.. aye! if we sold the guts of the mermaid, we’d get a short burst of cash and then go back to scraps. but.. with this.. we’ll have a steady flow of income forever!”
the other pirates roar loudly, lifting up leslie. leslie grins widely, overjoyed that the mermaid wasn’t going to die, and that her crew was praising her. she didn’t get a lot of attention from the rest of the pirates, for being the only woman on the ship. people thought she was weak. so this was a nice change.
later that night, leslie forced herself to wake up. the sun was nowhere to be seen, the moon was high in the sky. everyone was asleep. she tries to be silent as possible as she gets out of the bed. the rest of the crew were planning on having their giant.. orgy, in the morning, because they figured it would take all day. leslie felt sick at the idea. she crept towards the large cage on deck that the mermaid was in. she stops, staring at the sleeping beauty behind bars. “hello?” she whispers. the mermaid jumps awake, slamming against the cage. her green eyes are immediately wide and full of fear, and she hisses loudly, before whimpering. “i- i’m not here to hurt you. i promise. i’m here to save you. d.. d’ya understand me?” leslie raises her hands in the air, trying to seem non-threatening as she walks towards the cage. “i’m gonna let you go.”
she shakily opens the cage, slowly reaching in to help the mermaid out. but the mermaid bites down hard on her forearm, her pointy sharp teeth sinking deep into leslies flesh. leslie’s eyes shoot open, almost crying out in pain but she clasps a hand over her mouth as she crumbles to her knees. her eyes immediately well with tears, her breath more rapid than before. eventually the mermaid lets go and leslie pulls her arm back, trying her hardest not to scream as she cradles her arm close to her chest. “o.. ow.. owh.. oww..” she whines, squeezing her eyes shut tight. “i’m sorry.” a soft, shaky voice whispers. leslie’s eyes immediately open wide.
“you can talk?” she asks, her voice surprised but still strained with pain. the mermaid nervously nods. “d.. did you understand me when i said i’m here to save you?” the mermaid nods again. “yes.. but.. i- i thought you were.. lying. you were the one who said you could make money off of me.” leslie pauses. “a.. aye, but i don’t actually want to do that. i want to save you. i only said that so they wouldn’t kill and eat you!” the mermaid shifts nervously. “are.. are they going to rape me? all of them?” leslies heart cracks. “no. i wont let that happen. that’s why i’m getting you out. they plan to do that tomorrow, so you need to leave tonight.” “..are you going to rape me?” “what?! no! no- i would- no! i would never do such a thing! i- i would never. i’m not going to do that, no.” the mermaid looks around, before nodding. “okay. i trust you.” she says, her voice quiet and still weary. “can i help you out now?” “mhm..”
leslie nervously reaches into the cage once more, scooping the mermaid into her arms. the mermaid wraps her arms around leslie’s neck, not making eye contact. “do.. you have a name?” leslie asks, a bit awkwardly. “nadia.” the mermaid murmurs after a small moment. leslie nods. “aye. thats pretty. i’m leslie.” nadia nods silently, obviously still a bit nervous. leslie walks to the edge of the ship. “sh.. should i just drop you here? it’s.. a high drop.” nadia looks down to the water. “i.. i’ll be fine. don’t worry. drop me here.” “aye.” nadia leans in, kissing the tip of leslies nose. “thank you for saving me.” leslie flushes, and nods. “.. ‘s the right thing to do.”
leslie takes a deep breath before dropping nadia off of the ship, watching as she perfectly dives into the ocean with barely a splash and disturbance in the water. leslie lets out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding, staring at the spot nadia had disappeared to. she steps away from the edge of the ship, reluctantly heading back to bed to dream of the beautiful mermaid.
the next morning starts in outrage. as soon as someone noticed the mermaid was gone they alerted everyone, and it started a crazed frenzy of anger. the captain was the most angry, his face red and strained. “SOMEONE HAS TO PAY FOR THIS! AGH! THERE IS NO WAY THE MERMAID COULD HAVE ESCAPED- ONE OF YOU LET IT OUT!” he roars. the entire crew was forced to line up, and the captain searched and questioned each man one by one. leslie was panicking. if the captain saw the bite on her arm she would be good as dead. she lets out a shaky breath, glad that she could save the mermaid before she died.
“where were you last night?” the captain eventually questions leslie. “sleeping. like everyone else, captain.” he grits his teeth, and begins to pat down leslie. when he grabs her forearm she winces, and the captain glares at her, pulling his arm back. “roll up your sleeves.” he orders. she sighs, looking down as she rolls up her sleeve, revealing the gnarly bite mark on her arm. the captain gasps. “you!” he grits his teeth and clenches his fist, punching leslie across the face. she falls to the ground, groaning. the captain kicks her in the gut. “you fuckin’ traitor! you got rid of the mermaid, you fuck! we were all gonna be rich! rich and have lots of sex with a mermaid!” leslie curls up in pain as the captain continues to kick her.
before leslie knew it, she was being tied up, shanked in the gut, and thrown overboard. leslie gasps as she hits the water, feeling like she hit a brick wall instead. water immediately flows into her mouth and nose, and she squeezes her eyes shut as she thrashes and coughs, trying to keep her head above water. but she knew her attempts were futile because she was tied up. she could barely move at all. she knew she would die here.
but suddenly, a pair of arms wrapped around her body, and she was swam away at rapid speeds. she tried to open her eyes but had to immediately shut them due to the rush of saltwater that burned them. she was eventually dragged onto a beach, and she opened her eyes while gasping for air. her eyes were red and teary, but she could make out the face in front of her. “nadia,” she gasps. she was saved by a mermaid. nadia bumps the tip of her nose against leslies, before screaming at the top of her lungs. “HEELLP!! HELP ME!” she called out. eventually a few people started to run over, and she immediately went back to the water, leaving leslie there.
leslie was brought to a hospital, and a few days later she was doing pretty good. it still kinda hurt to move because of the healing stab wound, but it was getting better slowly. she spent a lot of time at the shore. skipping rocks and dipping her feet in, hoping that nadia would come to visit her someday. but she never did. not until two weeks later.
leslie was sitting on a large rock on the shore, eating an apple. she was adjusting to her new life fairly all right, though it was weird living a life without piracy and crime and whatnot. she worked at a pub due to her knowledge on how to brew her own beer and moonshine and wine. she looks out at the blue waves, when she suddenly sees a shimmer in the water by her feet. “nadia?” she gasps, looking around, trying to spot it again. suddenly, the familiar, beautiful mermaid leaps out of the water and onto the rock that leslie was sitting on. she yelps, dropping her apple. “hello, leslie,” nadia murmurs, shyly meeting her gaze. leslie’s eyes widen, her jaw dropping as she looks at nadia. she had already forgotten just how beautiful she was. “n.. nadia.. h.. hi. ye saved my life.” she stammers. “you saved mine. it was only fair to return the favor. i owed you.” “..aye..” leslie blinks, reaching out to touch her smooth scales. nadia slaps her hand away.
“i.. i came back to ask you.. why did you save me?” nadia asks. “you could’ve easily done.. horrible things to me. i was defenseless.” “well.. not defenseless. you bit me pretty good.” nadia gives leslie a sideways glance before continuing. “and you must’ve known that you would be thrown overboard, right? you were basically.. sacrificing yourself for me. and you didn’t even know me. you don’t know me.” leslie chews her lower lip as she thinks about her answer. “well.. i’m.. what the crew wanted to do to you was horrible. and i’m not horrible.” “you’re a pirate. you pillage and murder.” “..not anymore?” nadia huffs. “it’s just.. anyone would’ve done it. death for me seemed like a much better fate than what they would do to you. and you’re.. so beautiful. they would’ve stripped you of your beauty.”
nadia rolls her eyes. “thats.. cheesy. and.. stupid. are you saying if i was ugly you wouldn’tve saved me?” “what?! no! i would’ve done the same thing if you were ugly. i’m trying to say that i’m a good person. and.. it worked out in the end, because you saved me. and now i’m not dead.” nadia looks over to leslie, her green eyes meeting her brown ones. “okay.” nadia leans in, bumping her nose against leslie’s. then she dives back into the water. “wuh- wait!” leslie calls out, but it was too late. nadia was gone, back in the ocean.
leslie continued to visit the shoreline every day, and after a while, nadia was there every day too. they talked and shared stories, eventually becoming close friends. leslie brought nadia human food for her to try, stuff like soups and steaks and potatoes, and talked about how life was like on land. nadia did the same, but only brought food once since leslie got sick from eating raw fish.
1 month later.
leslie was sitting in the sand with nadia, her hand gently gliding along her scales. “i can’t get over how beautiful you are. your tail is unlike anything else i’ve seen in the ocean.” nadia feels herself growing warm. “you’re beautiful too.” she says softly. “beautiful? aye, no. m’not.. beautiful.” since leslie spent most of her life on the ship with a bunch of scraggly guys, she barely got compliments ever. and when she did, it was always “nice job mopping, leslie!” or “you’re great at tying knots.” not beautiful. and ever since she moved to land, she got complimented more often, but it was usually by women who mistook her for a man. “handsome” they called her. “dapper”, “hardworking”. never beautiful.
“you are. trust me.” nadia smiles softly. she didn’t smile often, since her teeth were sharp and scary, but leslie always liked when she did. leslie nervously stares at nadia, waiting for her to look over. when nadia does, leslie immediately speaks. “can i kiss you? i’m in love with you.” “i don’t know if-“ leslie cuts off nadia with a kiss. it was soft and sweet, but it was also clear that leslie was holding back just how excited she was to be kissing nadia. nadia pauses for a moment, her eyes almost fluttering shut before she forces herself to stop and pull back. she places a gentle, webbed hand on leslies chest, reluctance clear on her face.
“leslie.. you’re.. amazing.. but it would never work out.” she says, her voice slow and sad. “wh- why? because you’re a mermaid? i don’t mind. i promise.” nadia’s brows furrow. “i can’t go on land. i don’t have legs. and you can’t go in the ocean.” “i- i can go in the ocean! i know how to swim!” “you can’t go in the ocean.” nadia looks away, trying to keep her emotions in check. “i’m sorry.” leslie feels her body tense up. she started to tear up but forces herself to hold it back.
“no.. nadia, come on.. we can make it work. i’ll build a house right here on the shore. a little shack just for us, aye? a.. and.. i can get a wheelchair for you! we can make it work, i promise.” she pleads. nadia looks up at leslie before having to look away once more. “i can’t. we can’t. i’m sorry.” nadia begins to scoot away, to the water. leslie grabs her wrist. “w- wait! wait, please don’t go. will this be the last time i see you?” nadia doesn’t say anything, but the look in her eye says it all. “goodbye, leslie.” nadia pulls her arm back, and dips into the ocean. and she never came back.
not much to add except this time instead of a mermaid its a siren. much shorter than the other one, only ~1,000 words. not proofread again
captain iris ordered her crew to stop at a island in the distance. she wanted to dock for a few days so that her men could recover from seasickness and just take a rest from the waters. captain iris was the only female pirate captain anyone had ever heard of, and she was because her father was the former captain. she had lived on the boat her whole life, it was only reasonable she would take over when her father passed. though she was a woman, all the men on the ship looked up to her and followed her every order.
they anchored on the shore of the island and all got off the ship, all relieved to be standing on solid ground after days of being out at sea. they all immediately started to explore the small island, hunting rabbits and foraging for fruit. they built a campfire at night and sang shanties until they passed out.
it was real late at night when iris woke up to more singing. she was sleeping in her room on the boat, not wanting to camp with the others. she groans as she stretches, getting out of bed and quickly getting dressed, heading out to go scold her men for still being awake. they needed good sleep for tomorrow. but when she went to land, she saw her entire crew was asleep. her brows furrow, when the singing started up again. she realized the voice was lighter, nowhere near as gruff as her crew’s. it was the voice of a woman, a beautiful one. she looked around, trying to pinpoint where it was coming from, when she saw some large boulders in the distance, and a faint silhouette of a woman sitting on the rocks. “what the..”
she wakes up her right hand man, scotty, lightly nudging him with her foot. her jostles awake with a snort, glancing up. “..captain? whats going on?” he grumbles, sitting up. “listen.” he does, and begins to hear the faint song. “theres a woman. on that rock over there. i think she’s stuck. help me get the canoe.” scotty stands, cracking his back. him and iris hoist the canoe from the ship, pushing it into the water. they hop in and start rowing to the boulders. “sounds like an angel. i wonder how she got there.” scotty murmurs. “i wonder how long she’s been there.”
they eventually make it to the boulders. “hello?” iris calls out. the woman on the rocks glances over. iris is immediately caught in the trap of her beautiful green eyes. her face goes pink. “m.. miss, do you need help? we can take you back to land.” the woman huffs, and iris notices the slight shine on her legs in the dark. “are you..” she looks closer, seeing that it wasn’t legs. it was a tail. like a fish. her eyes widen. “scotty, are you seeing this?” scotty nods, looking just as starstruck as iris. the woman climbs closer and iris holds out her arms to help her into the boat. the woman sits sideways on iris’s lap.
“hello.” she coos, her tail shimmering in the moonlight. “wh.. what are you?” iris asks, her voice airy with curiosity. “i’m a mermaid.” her hands come up, gently massaging iris’s shoulders and neck. “i’m not in danger, i live on these rocks. but it’s so sweet that you came to save me.” iris goes red at the sensual touches and the sight of the mermaids beautiful body. “do.. do you have a name?” one of iris’s hands go to the small of the mermaids back, the other gently dragging over her scales. “my friends call me raine. how about you, sailor?” “..iris.. captain iris.” iris clarifies, wanting to impress the mermaid for some reason. scotty watches with wide eyes, feeling a bit jealous that the mermaid was showering iris with attention and not him.
“captain? ooh.” raine grins, biting her lower lip seductively. “i love a powerful woman.” iris chuckles nervously, her hands beginning to tremble. for someone who was so tough and put together most of the time, she seemed to be very weak for a mythical creature. “me and my friends have always dreamed of going to land.. can they come on the boat?” scotty immediately agrees, obviously wanting a mermaid girlfriend of his own. “of course!” he barks. “we can take all of you ladies to shore.. give you a tour of our ship and whatnot..” raine hums. “sounds amazing.” she makes a loud clicking sound, and two other mermaids pop out from behind the rocks. they flop into the boat, one sitting on each of scotty’s thighs, who immediately looks overjoyed.
“captain iris?” raine looks up to her, her thin pupils look like that of a snakes. “wh.. yeah? what do you need?” “just.. i dunno.” raine suddenly leans in, kissing iris. iris’s eyes widen, but she quickly kisses back. scotty lets out a hearty laugh at the sight, when one of the mermaids on his lap start kissing his neck, which immediately shuts him up. raine maintains eye contact as she pulls away, then leaning in once more to kiss along the column of her throat. iris lets out a shaky breath, when raine suddenly opens her mouth, digging her sharp teeth into iris’s neck. iris screams, feeling blood start to bubble up into her mouth. scotty jumps at the scream, attempting to stand and save iris but before he can move the two mermaids hold him down and bite down on him as well.
iris and scotty’s throats are torn out in seconds, killing them instantly. the three mermaids tear out their guts, all enjoying their midnight snacks. when they were finished, they gently pushed the boat back to shore. and when the rest of the crew woke up, they were met with the gory corpses of their captains.
i dont know if blurb is the right term, but the other day i wrote 2 short stories. this is one of them. :3 ~2,500 words. not proofread :p
(yes i know theres not a pirate in the picture)
lola peeked just the top of her head out of the water, her ears slightly twitching at the loud noise. two large pirate ships floated along the water, battling eachother. lola and her friends were watching nervously, making sure to not get too close. they were all taught since birth that humans are the most evil scum out there, especially pirates. and if a pirate ever saw you, you were good as dead. they were told stories of pirates staking mermaids through their hearts, chopping off their ears as trophies, skinning off their scales for blankets and coats. lola shuddered just thinking about it.
atop the water’s surface, the battle raged on. cannonballs being fired to either ship, smashing the wood, exploding off pieces and sending them plummeting to the bottom of the ocean. smaller boats deployed from the larger ships, sending pirates to the opposite ships to fight by sword or musket. men fell overboard at rapid speed, bloodied, dead. lola gulped and dipped beneath the water once more, turning to her friends. she was smiling, though the sight was scary, it gave her an adrenaline rush.
one of her friends, pike, gave a weary blub. he wanted to go back to the coral city, away from the bloody waters and the loud battle. lola huffs, wanting to stay. her friend bo took her side while her other friend coco took pike’s. they all begin arguing on if they should stay or not, when a body crashed into the water right in front of them. they all yelp, swimming back away from the body. they examine it from a small distance, pike now rambling loudly about how they have to leave. the man was unconscious, a large sword gash right across his chest.
the others were slowly starting to retreat, but lola swam closer. she raises a tentative webbed hand to the man’s neck, feeling a faint pulse. she informed the others he was alive with a string of rapid bubbles, but the others didn’t care. lola cared. she wanted to save him, no matter how much the others protested. they said he would kill her as soon as he woke up, if she was even anle to revive him. they called her stupid and foolish, and they wouldn’t stay to see her gutted. the others swam away, and after a long moment of contemplation, lola grabbed the man, and swam him to a small nearby island.
she dragged him onto the beach, it was hard without legs. she huffed and puffed, but eventually got him all the way out of the water. she sat next to him and grabbed a sharp rock, cutting off his coat and shirt to see the wound below and treat it. she pauses when she cuts off his undershirt, met with a pair of breasts. her brows furrow, she didn’t know women could be pirates. still, she drops back into the ocean, grabbing heaps of seaweed. she brings it back to the surface and begins to chew some of it into a paste. she spits it out into her hand, smoothing it over the large wound before using the rest of the seaweed to wrap her body. she then grabs a large plant and shoves it in the sand beside the pirate, so she wasn’t being beaten down by the sun.
(the seaweed works because of mermaid magic. fuck u.)
lola dips back into the water and swims a bit away, then waits for her pirate to wake up. after about an hour or two, her friends nervously swim back to the surface, expecting to find lolas corpse. and they thought they did. lola was floating on the water, sleeping. she had dozed off after about an hour of waiting. coco yelps at the sight of lola’s still body, immediately grabbing her and shaking her. lola startles awake, her eyes shooting open. when coco sees that lola was just asleep, she slaps her on the arm. the guys catch up, and pike asks where the pirate is. lola points to shore, and explains how she treated the wound and also how the pirate was actually a woman.
the others decide to wait for the pirate to wake up with lola, though they were all a lot more scared than she was. after a few more hours, the pirate opens her eyes. she gasps for air, before groaning at how much it hurts to breathe. she winces, trying to sit up to see where she was, before deciding against it after only moving an inch. she lays still on the sand, her breathing shallow and hoarse. her eyes dart around, trying to see what was going on, but it was hard with her limited sense of view, especially with a big plant in the way.
the mermaids immediately swim further back, and push lola forward to go check on the pirate. lola rolls her eyes, swimming to shore. she slowly crawls onto land, and comes into the pirates view, leaning over her. the pirates eyes immediately widen in fear, her fingers tensing at her sides. she attempts to scream, but all that comes out is a pained, scared, “hhhhhhhhhhaaah,” lola frowns at the pirates fear, and lets out a soft coo, bringing a webbed hand up to cup her cheek. she was trying to comfort the pained pirate.
the pirate gulps, straining her body to reach for her sword, which she realized wasn’t even there. “wh.. who are you..? what are you? am i dead?” the pirate whispers. lola’s brows furrow, her head tilting to the side in confusion. she didn’t speak human. she begins to speak, a series of various coos, blubs, and clicks. the pirates eyes narrow in confusion, before welling with tears. “h.. hurts.. ggh..” her head falls back in defeat, certain she would die. lola almost starts to cry too, mermaids were very empathetic creatures. lola dips back into the water, swimming past her friends to find some food.
she catches a couple crabs and lobsters, bringing them back to her new pirate friend. she sits next to her, gently stroking her hair to help calm her down before preparing the food. she smashes the crabs and lobsters heads, killing them quick. she breaks off a crab leg and digs out the meat, before poking at the pirates lips with it. she opens her mouth wide, to try and signal to the pirate to open her mouth, but she ends up scaring the pirate even more with her very sharp teeth. lola frowns, letting out a frustrated noise. she clicks angrily, holding up the crab leg to show that it was food.
eventually the pirate opens her mouth. lola feeds her all of the crab and lobster. lola pats the pirates head, giving a soft coo and a small kiss on the forehead, saying goodnight before she leaves. she heads back into the water and notices that her friends had left already, so she swims back home to meet them. lola smugly informs them that the pirate in fact did not try to kill her, and coco immediately points out that the only reason she didn’t is because she couldn’t move. that immediately brings her mood down.
the next morning, she swims back to the island. her heart drops when she sees that the pirate was gone, and she looks around frantically. eventually, she spots the pirate sitting against a tree, and immediately smiles. she starts to crawl over, but the pirate raises a pointy stick. “stop,” she orders. lola stops. the pirate gets to her feet, clutching her stomach. the wound was now completely healed, thanks to lolas mermaid magic. it was now a large scar across her body. the pirate had put her coat on, but it wasn’t buttoned up, because it couldn’t be buttoned up, because lola had slashed it with a rock.
the pirate walks closer, still pointing the stick at lola. her breath quickens, staring at lolas shimmering tail in place of legs. “holy shit.. is this real?” she bends down, slowly sliding a hand down the scales. lola looks over her shoulder behind her, watching the pirate examine her scales. she flips onto her back, staring up at the pirate. the pirate glances up, finally spotting lolas breasts. her face immediately goes red and she looks away. lola sits up, confused at the pirates sudden burst of color in the face. she didn’t know that humans viewed breasts as private and erotic, so she assumed that the pirate was suddenly sunburnt. she points to the shade and crawls over, and beckons the pirate to follow her.
the pirate does, hesitantly walking over and sitting next to lola. she seemed to pick up on the fact that boobs were no big deal to mermaids, and tried to stop thinking about it so much. “s.. so.. yer.. a mermaid. wow. i.. i didn’t know those were real. i can’t believe this. and you saved me. did you save me so that you can eat me? aye, i hope not.” the pirate drags a hand down her face. “do you have a name?” lola frowns, listening to the rambling. she didn’t understand a word. the pirate points to herself. “carmen. car-men. and.. you?” she points to lola. lola’s eyes light up with understanding, and she lets out a delighted blub. she points to herself. “l..luh.. lo..lah. looola.” she points to the
pirate. “c.. carr-men.” carmes smiles softly. “aye, thats it. lola? thats.. thats nice.” lola didn’t understand what carmen was saying, but she liked the kind tone of her voice, and she liked the sound of that kind voice saying her name. she suddenly hugs carmen, nuzzling her cheek against hers.
carmen jumps at the contact, but eventually hugs back, her tough, calloused hand against the soft skin of lola’s back. when they pull apart, carmen sighs. “god i.. i need to find my ship. or.. i guess, my ship needs to find me. i hope my mates are still alive. i hope.. anyone on the ship is still alive.” she sighs once more. “i wonder if we won the battle. when i woke up there were no ships to be seen. i doubt anyone won. oh man.. what am i gonna do?” lola blinks, confused at the sudden change in mood. she takes carmens hand, hoping to offer some comfort.
they hang out all day, eating crab and lobster and squirrel for meals, and lola goes back home at night. she rambles on and on to her friends about how the pirate, carmen, was sweet as a sea urchin, and how she was not murderous at all. she talks about how they shared meals together and lola showed off her scales and how they could kind of communicate even though they didn’t understand eachother.
the next couple of days are pretty similar. lola comes up to shore to hang out with carmen all day and then goes home at night. carmen was waiting for her ship to come, and if not her ship than a ship. she couldn’t stay on this island forever. she needed to go home. or atleast back to land. even though she was starting to enjoy lola’s company, she needed more than just one person to talk to. after about 5 days, a boat passed them. it wasn’t a pirate ship, but carmen was done with that life anyway. she didn’t want to die. she immediately stands up, waving her hands rapidly. “HEY!! HELP ME!!!” someone on the boat sees and runs to tell the captain, who stops it. they send out a smaller boat to the island, ready to save carmen, finally. she begins to sob tears of joy, when lola comes out of the water. without thinking she grabs lola, lifting her out of the water and hugging her tight. lola lets out a strained “bleh” at being squeezed.
the little boat hits shore, and the man stands up to ask if carmen was okay, when he finally spots lola’s tail. he yelps, falling off the boat. carmen drops lola back into the water. the man stands up. “h-holy moly! what is that thing?!” he immediately grabs the musket off his boat, pointing it at lola. carmen steps in front of her. “no! stop! she’s harmless!” the man pauses, looking a bit frightened. “she saved my life and she kept me alive. i’ve been here for days and the only reason i didn’t starve to death was because she’s been bringing me food! please, don’t hurt her,” the man slowly lowers his gun. “a.. alright.” he gets in the boat and waits for carmen to get in.
lola realizes that carmen was leaving and grabs her ankle, letting out a few frantic blubs before starting to sob. carmens heart breaks at the sight, and she sits down, pulling lola into her arms. “hey, i’m sorry i have to go,” she tears up herself, trying to comfort lola. “i promise i’ll visit sometime. i’m gonna get my own boat one day.” lola clings to carmen, unable to understand anything but the fact that she was leaving. carmen leans in, rubbing her cheek against lola’s like lola had once done. it seems to work, lola’s loud wails turning into small sniffles. lola pulls back, taking in carmen’s face for the last time, before suddenly diving in the water and swimming away rapidly. carmen watches her go before standing up and slowly getting into the boat, trying hard not to cry herself.
1 year later.
carmen lived in new york now, a new life without piracy. she lived in a small apartment and worked at a corner store. america had just recently gained independence from britain, and the small country was in good shape, only getting bigger. one night, she was at a local pub, getting drunk with a few friends. a couple men had come up to her throughout the night, and she rejected them all. she was dancing on the floor with her friends when she was tapped on the shoulder. she turned around. “are you carmen?” a sweet voice asked. carmens heart stopped as her eyes landed on a familiar face. “lola?” she asked, flabbergasted. her eyes dragged down her body, taking note of her legs. “h.. how are you.. are you real?” lola smiles, grabbing carmen and kissing her.
