As alternatives to YouTube here are some of my verdicts:

Playeur: Literally does not work at the gate. Cannot create a new profile; grapevine says it’s shutting down on the 30th but no idea if true.

Odysee: it’s as mixed of a bag as YouTube is in terms of content. There are right leaning accounts and conspiracy theory videos but then you search up queer friendly media, in this case Helluva Boss, and multiple videos were very prominently LGBTQ, one with a sapphic Loona and femOC and another with Blitz and Stolas in human form getting cuddly. It looks like the user will have to be more active in searching for desired content and in moderating who they interact with and who interacts with them. And you have an actual block function here so that helps.

Rumble: Do not, I repeat, DO NOT go to Rumble. It is literally designed to be a far and alt-right haven. You are not safe there! DO. NOT. GO. TO. RUMBLE!!!!

I really think we should stop saying "kid-friendly" and start saying "ad-friendly". We shouldn't indulge these companies and their excuses anymore. I also think that continuing to pretend that this is about "protecting the children" pushes a lot of the blame onto kids and teens, who don't have the political power to push through any of this censorship legislature. Corporations and governments are to blame.

Got some gems from my local hobby store and got my hair cut today.

I remember checking out Watchmen from my high school library 10+ years ago and running to the TV after elementary school let out to watch Teen Titans.

These are the kinds of cultural landmarks that KOSA, the Screen Act and the Interstate Obscenity Definition Act could impact. They don’t want children to be exposed to nuanced themes and storylines like Teen Titans had and don’t want young adults to have access to media that critiques the power structure like Watchmen. To live in a democratic society, we have to have faith in our children to understand complex issues when presented to them and our government should be expected to take criticisms when lobbied at them by a disgruntled public.

It’s August the 13th and YouTube has begun rolling out its data farming scheme. Here’s some options to resist:

1) Do not comply: do not give them ANY personal information when asked, for your own safety if nothing else. Not giving out personal information online is Internet Safety 101.

2) Clog their feedback. Go to the settings and feedback should be near the bottom. Tell them you will not risk your personal information being exposed/sold to unknown third-parties. If you are logging out/closing your account/deleting the app, tell them. It’s something they have to inform shareholders and their clients (advertisers) of.

3) Review bomb their apps on your app stores like so:

Make the data farming and risk to personal information the first thing people see. Reviews are something advertisers with pay attention to especially if people are leaving the platform forcing YouTube and Google executives to take notice.

Another bill to kill has entered the chat: The Interstate Obscenity Definition Act has entered committee. Spread the word, call your reps, ESPECIALLY the ones in committee, and hold their feet to the fire however you can. The Screen Act already seeks to label LGBTQ content as pornography, The Interstate Obscenity Act will federally criminalize LGBTQ content through the banning of ALL pornography. We’ve all seen how community guidelines become a slippery slope and drag net, this will be on a national scale across all media which will impact sexual assault resources, sex education, lgbtq help-hotlines, EVERYTHING. Doesn’t matter that you consume it legally; doesn’t matter if storefronts already do everything they to prevent minors from accessing adult materials; they want to ban it all based on their own religious beliefs and impose those beliefs on an unwilling populace.
