Now the following originates from a political science professor, a scholar of violent conflict. Ones no need to be a scientist or annalist to see that Trump and a host of acolytes and wannabes such as Fox [News]’s Tucker Carlson and Georgia representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, had transformed the Republican party into a near-fascist personality cult that’s a perfect instrument for wrecking democracy.
In 2020, Trump awarded Mr. Limbaugh the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The act signaled that Mr. Limbaugh’s brand of bullying, populist white ethnocentrism – a rancid blend of aggrieved attacks on liberal elites, racist dog-whistling, bragging about American exceptionalism and appeals to authoritarian leadership – had become an integral part of mainstream political ideology in the U.S.
Pushing the United States to the brink of losing its democracy today is a multiplication effect between its underlying flaws and recent shifts in the society’s “material” characteristics. These shifts include stagnating middle-class incomes, chronic economic insecurity, and rising inequality as the country’s economy – transformed by technological change and globalization – has transitioned from muscle power, heavy industry, and manufacturing as the main sources of its wealth to idea power, information technology, symbolic production and finance.
“A terrible storm is coming from the south, and Canada is woefully unprepared. Over the past year we’ve turned our attention inward, distracted by the challenges of Covid-19, reconciliation and the accelerating effects of climate change.
“But now we must focus on the urgent problem of what to do about the likely unraveling of democracy in the United States. We need to start by fully recognizing the magnitude of the danger. If Trump is re-elected, even under the more optimistic scenarios the economic and political risks to our country will be innumerable.”
Trumpism increasingly resembles European fascism in its contempt for the rule of law and glorification of violence. Democracy is an institution, but underpinning that institution is a vital set of beliefs and values. If a substantial enough fraction of a population no longer holds those beliefs and values, then democracy can’t survive.

Studies on working from home tend to show that people are actually more productive, but employers are still terrified that their time is being wasted. Little concern, of course, is displayed when employers waste their employees’ time, with, say, endless meetings, nonsensical demands, and not-technically-required-but-there-will-be-repercussions-for-not-attending “social” events during non-work hours. And every freelancer knows the pain of the time wasted trying to get paid, submitting multiple invoices, crafting carefully worded “Just checking up on this!” messages, calling and emailing and texting and pleading and sobbing and hiring a private detective to find the person in the accounting department who can finally cut you a check for $137.82 that they have owed you for three months.
But ha ha, you have zero power and you are exactly $89.17 away from making your rent this month, so what choice do you have?
Just watched that and can 110% recommend it. Time well spend for that. The majestic documentary “David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet” opens with its title subject standing in a deserted location. For the few folks that follow me on Twitter - my account got suspended from them without any reason given. That’s not a bot account -I had to go and pass that “human test” and got phone verified but that does not seem to make any difference. I guess my 1,101 tweets since 2009 are to much for the 300 million users platform.
It's poor how their support communicates - ones receives some auto-generated email but that's it. Another account of mine - also not abused and I did NOT participated in any malicious activities - is already 2 month suspended and zero response from them. Very incompetent!!
I’ll look for an alternative to post updates on the fly as I used to do.

Being at home under lock-down does not mean waiting for the corona-virus to go away or waiting for a cure or vaccine to be found (It would imply a quarantine of approximately 18 month!) It is only to give the health-care system time to prepare and not collapse. "Normal" activities will return soon and the virus will continue to be present. It will be with us for a long time to come. Now it is important to prepare our head to live with it. That means changing behaviors such as greeting, sanitation, social distance, strengthening of our immune system, among others.
