>" Honestly, I have a teeny tiny theory that our showrunner might have something against Geralt ;) " share your theory!! also im sad as well but i didnt like the netflix show to begin with so i guess im less sad
Haha, I wonder if I should, because I’ve already lost about five followers right after yesterday’s post about Ciri and Freya :D. Just to give food for thought, though, which character is the least developed with barely any backstory apart from Visenna and only because that was a scene in the books? Which character got turned into a monosyllabic brute - like from “The Monstrum” - but used to be originally someone emotional, kind and philosophical? Which character’s positive traits/deeds got transferred to other characters (Triss - solving the striga, Marilka - the trick with the fork and the rat, Istredd - thinking of nice things for Yennefer to read telepathically)? Which character’s good behavior around his friends was turned to bad? Which character didn’t get to be tender during his first sex scene with Yen, wasn’t shown to be sweet with the new nickname for her? Wasn’t painted as selfless, but as selfish with his wish?
Which character’s bond with a certain lion cub was treated as so unimportant that it was cut out completely because of omitting the most important short story? And turned into “a princess and her bodyguard” thing instead of “a daughter and her father” dynamic?
Like with Yennefer and Ciri - yes, they were changed too, and of course that not for the better, but from Lauren’s point of view she’s actually making them your typical “superheroines” from CW shows (instead of making them strong and complex like Sapko). But, with Geralt, the changes he undergoes paint him as the bad guy more often than not. Look at the fandom and how they used to see him at the beginning. The villain who hurt poor Jaskier ;).
But this is about the characterization. But, about the show in itself? Geralt was used for marketing purposes thanks to Henry, but he wasn’t the main character, just the titular. And look at his arc in some episodes when Yen appears too. Geralt is barely in the episode then (like in ep2, for example, around maybe fifteen minutes on screen), his adventure cut down to minimum to make space for all other, more important, and “more main” characters. If you have limited time, you get rid of the unwanted, unimportant stuff. And lets face it: first books were from Geralt’s perspective. Then he shares the spotlight with the other main protagonist - Ciri - and world-building “randos”. If it gets to that, we’ll have “guest starring: Henry Cavill as ‘Geralt’” because he won’t get new plots written just for him - I mean, he was the only one who didn’t have anything new, but rather cut down xDD. Also, even Henry Cavill was struggling with that:
“…I mean. I don’t know if you’ve read the books, but… Certainly the first few. They are very much from Geralt’s perspective. So with the showrunner’s vision… And the perspective is shifted to be almost more of a Cirilla, Yennefer perspective. So it’s about finding my character’s place, within that vision. And making sure I do everything I can to be as faithful to source material as possible, within the structure set out for me.”
It showed that Henry didn’t know what Geralt’s place was in all of that ;). Also, remember that thing lately on social media? With Geralt’s shattered knee and even Lauren admitting that she basically skipped it in the books only noticing: “oh, Geralt has some pains, let’s move on”? Yeah, sounds like a great showrunner who puts so much thought into Geralt’s character :D. And people are praising her for listening to the audience instead of noticing that she should’ve known about his later struggles - until Toussaint - in the first place, given that she always talks about reading the books 2345678 times ;)
Alright, so that... would be it, because I, apparently, never can write short explanations, haha :D. Thank you for asking ;)!
my favourite ever literary trope is “you want me to be a villain? i’ll show you a villain” that shit gives me goosebumps and given the right context also turns me on
most problems with the masterdoc aren't with the masterdoc itself but with how other people use the masterdoc
if you are using it as a lesbian litmus test you are absolutely misusing the document and contributing to the criticisms of it being a poor resource for questioning sapphics
it's not a litmus test, it's not a quiz, you do not have to identify with the doc in order to be a lesbian/not actually attracted to men
the document is merely "hey, if you identify with any of these points, you should maybe examine tjya further" which is suggestive, not indicative, and just a Good Vibe for a resource to have and most of you ruined that
“So that’s all life is to you? Monsters and money?” “It’s all it needs to be.” “You say this is all life is to you, but there is a vortex of fate around all of us, Geralt, growing with each and every one of our choices, drawing our destinies in closer. I feel something out there waits for you. Something more.”
“You found me! Oh, Geralt! I was waiting all the time! For so very long… We’ll be together now, won’t we? Now we’ll be together, won’t we? Say it, Geralt! Forever! Say it!” “Forever, Ciri.” “It’s like they said! Geralt! It’s like they said! Am I your destiny? Say it! Am I your destiny?” […] “You’re more than that, Ciri. Much more.”
"compulsory heterosexuality" is something you can unlearn as an individual
"coercive heteronormativity" is something we must dismantle as a collective
This is the funniest thing I have ever read
I have to hear this song nonstop while I’m working and this makes it so much better
Jjfjehhdhehe
I don't care what your opinions are on bi lesbian discourse but seeing men butt in, imply bi women are invaders, and joke about causing physical harm to them should not be allowed
TEYONAH PARRIS as LYSISTRATA Chiraq (2015)
it isn't my fault
but I still feel bad.
egosyntonic conditions are fun becuase you essentially develop traits that help cope with trauma and then a doctor comes along and tells you that your coping mechanisms are actually very terrible ✌🏾
I need to be selfish more. That's what I'm taking away from this year/life
Biggest failing of the internet is that in order to be vibing with my friends I have to actually be talking to them. I socialize like a cat I just show affection by sitting next to you. Ily but sometimes I have Nothing to say. Not a damn thing going on in my head
I don’t want to “have” a “conversation” I want to peel an orange and share it with you
not to feel positively about tumblr in 2020 but the tag function really is like. the thing they got right, huh? i love reading ppl’s little notes and organizational systems and i particularly like it when ppl speak to me directly in the tags to be like. “raquel you complete asshole i love this thing you’ve done i’m crying and i hate you.” i thrive on the quiet validation it fuels me
Interesting librarian lore: The way tumblr’s tagging system works actually has a name! It’s called a folksonomy, based on the word taxonomy, i.e. creating systems to classify information so we can fucking…find it later. The reason it has the prefix folk- is because it is created “by the people (who use the system)” and not contained by something called a “controlled vocabulary” where you have to fit whatever your tagging into per-defined tags.
Three clear examples from fandom-land I can give to demonstrate different tagging systems:
Controlled Vocabulary: Fanfiction.net uses a (really terrible) controlled vocabulary. Whoever’s responsible for the CV does not change it often and it’s hard to fit content into the containers, and users have no creativity or control.
Folksonomy: Tumblr. You can say whatever tf you want in the tags! Which is very cool and makes for whole new ways of engaging! The drawback is that it’s frankly AWFUL for finding content. If you tag #star wars and your friend tags #SW they will not show up and there is no one combining those tags.
Hybrid: Ao3. Say what you want about Ao3, we have it made in the fucking shade over there. You can tag things however you want! But Ao3 also uses those tag wranglers you’ve heard about to track trends in tags and suggest a responsive controlled vocabulary. So if you tag Character A/Character B but others tag Character B/Character A, the wranglers combine those tags into a preferred term that Ao3 suggests when you start tagging your work. But Ao3 also lets you chat away in your tags, bringing the best of both worlds.
Anyway I spent 2 years getting a masters in library science and am 40k in debt, just to share this information with you. So go forth now armed with the knowledge that there are reasons some tagging systems are…better than others.
Oh, and there’s even a wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folksonomy
