ok i read WHODUNNIT which featured way more daddy issues than i anticipated frankly. my commentary is long and full of quotes and meandering so it's going behind a cut

this book has more continuity issues than it does continuity. around S1-S2.

clark alien masking is easier to forget about when you're watching him do things on the tv and not hearing the Be Normal internal monologue.

exactly the kind of stupid thing i would expect jonathan to say. next he can talk about the good old days before the american way of life was endangered by the evils of modernity.

clark's views: struggles to believe a father could hurt a child willfully and with full awareness. totally can see murder being an expression of love. he just can't imagine a father not loving his child.

the conflation of getting revenge on someone who didn't love you enough, who found you unworthy, and earning love from that same person is. well. i'm just sayin!! lex has a love map that he walks over and over again.

clark admires lex, sure, but the very weird dynamic they also have is the employed adult looking up to and emotionally leaning on the fifteen year old. very "if i'm emotionally immature and you're emotionally immature, who's driving the bus?" no one. the bus crashes into a wall.

lex's implicit awareness of his father being predatory in whatever ways are socially acceptable.

ok it is VERY smallville to have clark's plot be about realizing parents go bad sometimes and snap, to have him and jonathan and chloe all feeling bad about letting the family down and not intervening to protect them. while lex's storyline is about rescuing the father who systematically fucked with his head for decades and dealing with people who accuse him of planning the kidnapping and wondering if lionel planned the kidnapping to test lex. oh and jonathan gets in a shot about how it's the luthors' fault, lex included, that the smallville community social ties are weakening, because they 'set the tone'.
