Harley met Tony when Tony was presumed dead. He knew it, too. Pressed that newspaper into his chest and reminded Tony that he’s dead before going to check out the suit. Harley met Tony when Tony didn’t have to do all the things that come with being publicly alive. The meetings, the conferences, the being gawked at, the messages to loved ones.

Harley met Tony when Tony was free to be a ghost. The first person to meet him in that ghost state, too. Harley watched Tony reinvent himself, redefine himself. Tony called himself a mechanic and Harley didn’t push back on it. He knew. The tony stark he’d heard of before the mechanic crashed in his garage was dead. The mechanic remained.

The mechanic who didn’t want to talk about the past. Didn’t want to talk about the future. Lived in the now as if walking a cliff edge, teetering.

We only get to see Harley twice, and Tony was a ghost in one of them. He was dead in the next.

We never see Harley interact with the version of Tony that still has social obligations to attend to. Harley only knew a Tony who was, in some way, inaccessible.

It seems interesting to me that Harley himself is so inaccessible to us, then. We don’t get to know more. We don’t get to hear about his life or fill in the blanks.

I can’t help but wonder if Harley was in any way intended to be a parallel of how Tony wishes he could be. Smart, helpful, quick-witted, out of the public eye. Down a beaten road where you’ve got to really be looking for him to find him.

For as much as Peter is a parallel to Tony Stark Iron Man, i think Harley is the parallel to the mechanic. To Tony. Peter is who tony would be if he was Iron Man without having to go to Afghanistan. Harley is who he’d be if he wasn’t born to Howard.
