dear tourists that come to Japan during sakura season:
please dont touch the sakura on the trees. we don’t care if you’re trying to take aesthetic photos with sakura in your face, we don’t care if you want to take clusters straight from the trees home. it damages the trees and this has been a problem every season. it’s basic hanami manners you should take the time to learn before coming to our country.
This is a little delayed because I passed out when I got home both days. (Too exhausted from helping friends in the artists alley, walking around trying to keep my pigeon mask from falling off--yes, that was me--and then going to the Lotus Juice concert on Saturday l m a o) So, I’m compiling my notes from both days into one post!
There was an absolute no-electronics policy for both panels--Saturday was the Hatoful Boyfriend panel, Sunday was a panel about participating in Comiket--but I took really detailed notes in my notebook. Unfortunately, things in this post might still be a little jumbled because my notes are in scattered Japanglish and my handwriting is messy (rip)
I’ve tried to make spoilers really obvious so they’re easy to avoid, but here’s a spoiler warning for HoliStar anyway.
Saturday: Hatoful Boyfriend Panel
(Damu-sensei didn’t talk very much for this panel because she was doing a live watercolour painting of The King’s other form that was to be auctioned off at AOD’s charity auction. I don’t have any pictures of it, but it was beautiful!!!!!)
When the panel introduction started, Moa-sensei introduced herself in English; Damu-sensei tried really hard and then ended up just saying the rest of her introduction in Japanese ww
This was their first time in the US so they were nervous
Originally, AOD had only contacted Moa-sensei to be a guest, but when Damu-sensei found out about it she begged Moa-sensei to take her with her wwwwww
The original April Fools’ Hatoful Boyfriend game was made in one day; Moa-sensei already had the bird pictures in her photo albums and drawing the gijinka forms didn’t take very long either
Moa-sensei’s process is to write the script first, then do the art that the script needs, and then finally program the game
The part Moa-sensei had the most difficulty writing was the BBL route
Moa-sensei decided to make HoliStar while she was wrapping up writing the BBL route because she wanted to expand on the quails’ story
Damu-sensei was chosen as a collaborator on HoliStar because she lives in Moa-sensei’s workplace wwww
Moa-sensei wanted to make remakes for a while because the original games don’t run on modern OSes anymore but was too busy to. Digital Devolver e-mailed her really suddenly one day to ask her if they could remaster it for her and she agreed because she didn’t have to do too much work for it
Moa-sensei didn’t realise that there was international attention on Hatoful Boyfriend until she came across Nazerine’s fan translation
ESC also e-mailed Moa-sensei really randomly to ask about making the plushie Kickstarter (which a majority of the room contributed to LOL); planning for the plushies happened the very day she got the e-mail from him
Moa-sensei’s favourite reaction to Hatoful Boyfriend is how people think it looks really ridiculous and stupid at first glance but then it just suddenly gets extremely serious
When asked about who other than Ryouta they’d like to see crossdress, Moa-sensei struggled with the question until finally saying that she’d like to see Nageki in a sailor uniform; Damu-sensei replied really excitedly that she’d like to see Professor Kawara in a school-issued swimsuit
Professor Kawara’s official stance on humans: he likes all living things equally. As for Ryouta, he doesn’t like humans in general; he just likes Hiyoko.
The birds that left the biggest impression on Moa-sensei since she arrived in the US on the 10th were the bluebirds and blackbirds she saw at the Google headquarters and she wants to include some of them in a sequel game
A fan asked if any of the birds had romantic feelings for each other that weren’t explicitly stated; Moa-sensei replied very quickly (and in English), “Secret!”
(HOLISTAR SPOILER) The reason Moa-sensei chose to use the real Nanaki Kazuaki and not Uzune Hitori masquerading as him for the hatsumoude shrine date episode was because she made HoliStar especially to tell his story and figured that the shrine date episode was a good place to give him more screentime because it was short
A Snowdrake cosplayer asked which of the birds hated puns the most. Moa-sensei replied very gravely, “Don’t say puns in front of Dr. Iwamine because he would immediately kill you.”
Moa-sensei has liked birds as far back as she can remember
One of Moa-sensei’s favourite games is Square-Enix’s Live A Live. If only taking into account recent games, then her favourite game would be Nier.
A fan asked where the idea for Nishikikouji Tohri (adorably and fittingly for Tohri, the fan had trouble saying his name) came from and Moa-sensei’s simple reply was “If you ever get the chance to see a golden pheasant in person, you’ll understand immediately where the idea came from.”
Moa-sensei and Damu-sensei were both very touched by how many people were at the panel; Friday night in the hotel room, Moa-sensei was getting anxious about it and was worried that it would be like “...but nobody came.” (She said the Undertale quote in English lol)
A fan asked what Moa-sensei’s favourite visual novels and dating sims were and she replied that she actually doesn’t play other visual novels or otome games. However, she really likes adventure games, especially Ace Attorney and Danganronpa.
What surprised Moa-sensei the most about the United States was how big everything was; she had heard that everything was bigger in the US, but didn’t actually really know that it would be this big
If Moa-sensei played Hatoful Boyfriend and wasn’t the person who made it, she probably would have died on her first playthrough
Moa-sensei didn’t give Okosan a proper gijinka form because she thinks of the real Okosan as her family and it was impossible for her to imagine him as a human
Moa-sensei wanted players to be able to put themselves in Hiyoko’s shoes and imagine whoever, so she makes an actual effort to not think of Hiyoko in concrete images
The script for all the routes in the otome half of Hatoful Boyfriend took two months in total. The BBL script took between two and three months to write. Doing the art assets took one day.
The hardest part of developing Hatoful Boyfriend was writing the ending for BBL
Hatoful Boyfriend was Moa-sensei’s first game
A fan asked about how far along Black Holmes was in development and Moa-sensei apologised for how delayed it’s been; while working on it, she collapsed from overwork and got very sick. It took her about three years to fully recover, but she’s okay now.
Moa-sensei knows about Aviary Attorney and it’s on her Steam wishlist for when she has time to play it.
The story of real Okosan: Moa-sensei originally had two fantail pigeons; one day, they laid an egg, and out of that egg came Okosan.
Apart from Okosan’s parents and Okosan, Moa-sensei also has at home one canary, one java sparrow, and one budgie
Moa-sensei’s only real say in the remakes of Hatoful Boyfriend and HoliStar were the assignment of achievements
The hardest thing for Moa-sensei to translate in Undertale was Sans’s puns
A fan asked what they thought the saddest scenes in Hatoful Boyfriend were. Moa-sensei thought the saddest part was when Rabu and Azami broke up; Damu-sensei replied, “The fact that Dr. Iwamine is still alive”
Damu-sensei’s favourite character to design was The King. Moa-sensei had trouble deciding, but the fan who asked the question said that it was okay to take into account the Absolute Zero designs, so Moa-sensei finally answered that she really liked designing Nanaki’s Absolute Zero look
Professor Kawara joined the Hawk Party not out of politics, but because they had enough money to fund the experiments he wanted to do
Absolute Zero was meant to be a one-off spinoff, but they both want to revisit it and there might be more Absolute Zero stuff in the future
Miru and Kaku actually existed at least three years before Hatoful Boyfriend was even an idea; they were originally just doodles that would randomly appear in Moa-sensei and Damu-sensei’s sketchbooks
Every Hatoful Boyfriend route is dark because Moa-sensei is a dark person
Moa-sensei can’t give more specifics about the quails’ relationship because she wants to talk about it in a potential sequel
Moa-sensei misses Okosan, but she thinks that he probably doesn’t even care that she’s gone

Sunday: Making Doujinshi for Comiket
Theirs was the first panel in the panel room on Sunday and there were no chairs set up on the stage. While the staff ran around looking for chairs for them, Moa-sensei and Damu-sensei were like “should we just sit in mid-air?” and then eventually sat down in seiza wwwww Staff ended up finding real chairs for everyone though
Moa-sensei did her introduction in English again, but this time she said “My name is Hato Moa and I made a pigeon dating sim, but today I am here as a fangirl” LOL Damu-sensei introduced herself as a freelance illustrator, but she’s been a doujinka for many years
Moa-sensei described doujinshi as “like fanfiction in the west, but turned into a book”
At Comiket, people sell not only doujin books but also merchandise
When asked how they decided on what to make, Damu-sensei replied “I just go with my feelings” and Moa-sensei replied that it depends on how many pages she wanted to do and what genre it was going to be
Moa-sensei does all her art digitally on an LCD tablet, Damu-sensei does sketches and lineart on paper with G-pens and then digitally paints
Moa-sensei said the hardest part of making doujinshi is coming up with the story
It’s actually cheaper to use a printing company than to print out doujinshi on your own and Damu-sensei said that doujinka don’t have to stress out about making the story interesting or look good because the printing company will make it look amazing anyway
Moa-sensei warned against working yourself too hard in your 20′s because you’ll end up with health problems when you’re older
Most printing companies nowadays only accept orders digitally; for manga, you have to submit PSDs, and for novels, you have to submit PDFs
Printing costs depend on how many pages and how many copies you’re printing
The printing companies usually deliver the product in a week, but it depends on the season; right before natsukomi and fuyukomi, all printing companies get really overwhelmed by orders
The only major restrictions on doujinshi printing are that doujinka can’t print Disney doujinshi and they have to censor genitals, which they have to do themselves; Damu-sensei said that printing companies will call if there’s not enough censorship and Moa-sensei said that they’re very specific and will point out specific pages and panels, too
Deciding how many copies to print depends on the genre and fandom, not the quality of the work
Everyone works on the same paper size (B5?), regardless of how big the final product will be
Damu-sensei is terrible at keeping deadlines and can speak from experience that printing companies are usually very nice if you beg them for an extra day www but there’s an extra fee
Doujinka have to pay for upfront costs, but the printing company will refund them if they don’t deliver on time
Most doujinshi events end registration a month in advance, but Comiket is strict because it’s very large; for Natsukomi, registration ends in January
Comiket registration is technically a lottery system, but blacklisted circles will automatically get rejected. Ways to get blacklisted include selling R-18 works despite getting warned about it, being late, not showing up, and auctioning off table spots
Participating in Comiket costs 10000yen and circles will only get a table for one day
There’s generally no restriction on registration, but people who are too young (about elementary-school-age) and people who are underaged but try to sell R-18 works anyway aren’t allowed
Generally, the first day of Comiket is for game fandoms, the second day is for female-oriented works, and the third day is for male-oriented works
Moa-sensei and Damu-sensei will sell both old and new doujinshi because getting a table at Comiket is really difficult so they want to show as much of their product as possible
Pricing doujinshi usually depends on how many pages are in it; a general rule-of-thumb formula is the number of pages multiplied by 100 and add 100 for a full-colour cover; pricing will depend on how nice the finish is, and entirely-full-colour doujinshi are priced about three times as much
Moa-sensei and Damu-sensei usually break even; Comiket did a survey of how much profit was being made a few years back and they found that over 70% of circles lost money and only about 5% actually made a very big profit
Moa-sensei and Damu-sensei live in Osaka, and even when they price their doujinshi about twice as much as the actual printing cost, it only barely covers their bullet train expense to Tokyo for Comiket
Sometimes Moa-sensei and Damu-sensei will table separately, but if they’re selling Hatoful Boyfriend works then they have to table together because they get a lot of customers, which is something they’re both very grateful for
One major difference between the Japanese doujin culture and American doujin culture that they noticed was that there’s a bigger emphasis on illustrated full-colour prints and not many books
They both want to participate in an American Artists Alley one day
For their day jobs, Damu-sensei works as an illustrator for social games and she also draws covers and designs logos for other circles; Moa-sensei also does a lot of game illustration and writes scenarios for other people, but mostly she just lives off the money she gets from Hatoful Boyfriend
Damu-sensei also notes that lately fanfiction doujinka are starting to pay illustrator doujinka to make covers for them
They can’t sell their doujinshi overseas because the logistics of shipping are a lot more complicated than producing for face-to-face selling; however, they really, really want to try doing more international conventions and events
Lately, Comiket registration is done online and it’s a lot easier than how the process used to be because now doujinka can fix mistakes on their registration form whenever they want and Damu-sensei thinks it also makes the staff’s lives easier
When asked about whether they start actually making doujinshi before or after getting a table assignment at Comiket, Damu-sensei said that she only starts planning after receiving the acceptance. Moa-sensei said she starts planning about half a year in advance, to which Damu-sensei exclaimed すげえよお前！ (What the hell, that’s amazing) LOL
Black and white doujinshi are popular in Japan because doujinka want to show off their storytelling ability more than they want to show off their technical ability
There are a lot more people participating in Comiket nowadays, so cosplayers have also increased in number. There is also more variety in cosplay in terms of who cosplays and what kind of cosplays they do; some people even cosplay as background images behind other cosplayers and the Tokyo Big Sight
When asked what makes a good story, Damu-sensei replied that a good story doesn’t become a good story because of the writer, but because a reader says it’s good. (The way she said this was a lot more poetic in Japanese but it’s very difficult to translate to English orz) Moa-sensei advised that watching a lot of dramas and movies is important for learning how to tell stories and she really likes how good American dramas are because they’re especially interesting and unique. She really wants the new season of Bones to start already LOL
They both prefer print doujinshi over ebook doujinshi. Moa-sensei said that ebook formats and devices are constantly changing, so people may not be able to read an ebook forever. She likes paper books because she can be sure that she’ll be able to read them until the day she dies. Damu-sensei just likes paper. LOL
When making doujinshi, Damu-sensei will first storyboard, then she’ll do the writing like it’s a script. After that, she starts rough sketches and uses sticky notes for text bubbles so she can change lines as she sees fit. Of course, sometimes she’ll have to end up changing everything in the end anyway lol
Moa-sensei’s process depends on how long her doujinshi will end up being. For short stories, she’ll storyboard and then go from there. For longer works, she’ll start by writing it long-form as text, then she’ll storyboard.
Moa-sensei chose to do works about pigeons because she really only ever thinks about pigeons and Damu-sensei has liked pigeons for as long as she’s known Moa-sensei.
Moa-sensei doesn’t think that she writes especially unique works
For software, Damu-sensei uses mostly Comic Studio, Photoshop, and Sai. She also occasionally uses Illustrator. However, she mostly just uses her hands. Moa-sensei uses mostly Clip Studio Paint for everything, but she uses Photoshop when designing covers.
People who participate in Comiket tend to finish all their work pretty close to the event. People especially looking to turn a profit will wait until the last minute to see what’s popular, because even very popular cute female characters will sometimes be completely forgotten within three months. Damu-sensei also added that sometimes people (like her) will just randomly get an idea that they fall in love with and absolutely have to make just before the deadline
There aren’t many doujinshi made for western fandoms, but the most popular fandoms would be dramas and movies; lately, what’s popular are American comics (especially Marvel), Adventure Time, and Steven Universe

japanese clothes tend to come in one-size...most clothing retailers will have the measurements (i.e. bust, waist, hips, height, etc) listed somewhere so you'll have to learn your own measurements too

Yes that’s right!! Years ago when Mafu was still a beginning/growing utaite he was a big Soraru fan, and would excitedly retweet his covers with captions like “this is so good!!! I have goosebumps!!” and “I’ve listened 3 times nonstop already,” stuff that’s, well, typical for a fan :P I also recall something like “I have a cold but listening to soraru-san’s covers will heal me” (don’t quote me on that but I think it was something like that ww)Somewhere along the way as Mafu got more popular, I think he had an opportunity to meet Soraru and get to talk to him through mutual friends or something like that? From there I think they hit it off and became friends, and I’m sure once they really became acquainted, Mafu would never let them grow out of touch www (I mean how amazing would it be to get to start talking to one of your fave utaite who you really respect?? :O)And now, well, everyone can see what close friends they’ve become. Mafumafu told a story in a nama last night about a time Soraru really went above and beyond to help Mafu get through a bad experience that he couldn’t get through on his own, and you could hear him getting choked up as he talked about it ;;;; it seriously has to be some kind of miracle or something that they were able to become such close, important friends when you consider their different personalities and how they started!!
