Remember the last time the FCC nearly killed net neutrality?
Tumblr had this nice big banner at the top of your dashboard alerting any active user about the problem. Guess what has changed since then? Verizon, one of the companies gunning for the death of net neutrality owns yahoo who in turn own Tumblr. Spread the word, tell everyone you can: battleforthenet.com tag posts you see about net neutrality with popular tags so the news spreads.

Have a good day at work little buddy
EVERYONE LOOK AT THIS IMMEDIATELY.
concept: an austen-inspired tabletop rpg where there are five classes
single man in possession of a large fortune who is in want of a wife
young woman with low connections who must marry so that she can secure her future
cad whose main goal is to convince someone to elope with him
wealthy, scheming woman whose goal is to ruin the happiness of the aforementioned young woman
tiresome & vulgar elderly busybody (can be either a man or a woman)
I’m gonna split this out a little farther, because I feel like we’re blurring the lines between classes and stats. First you should pick your Austen class:
Bachelor/Bachelorette
Cad / Floozy
Husband/Wife
Matriarch/Patriarch
Busybody
Then you roll for your stats across the 6 basic Abilities:
Money
Intelligence
Connections
Manners
Looks
Snark
@oulfis
I would absolutely play this. I would DM this. I would write, and then read, carefully snide free indirect discourse passages of scene-setting as a DM for this.
#I would permit zany sidequests to France#I would make spotify playlists of hit 1798 tunes to play during climactic ballroom scenes#I would make#(of course!)#spreadsheets (via @oulfis)
I want my first tabletop rpg experience to be faux Austen DM’ed by oulfis.

1944 - Snowball the cat tries to take over a machine gun in Normandy so she can shoot some Nazis herself.
Blessed post. Good kitty
i want someone to read that headline in an old timey reporter voice
Okay fun fact: cats were actively deployed to trenches and ships to help deal with rodent infestations in both world wars, and they had the curb cutter effect of keeping the men’s spirits high.
One cat, Simon, was given the rank “Able Seacat Simon” after dutifully killing rats and mice that were destroying the HMS Amethyst’s food supplies. The ship had come under fire during the Chinese civil war and many of its crewmen had died. The cat had been gravely injured, too, but he picked out the shrapnel himself – seriously – and went straight to killing the rodents that were overrunning the ship. He unfortunately passed from his injuries two weeks before he was scheduled to receive the Dickin Medal. To this day, he is the only cat to receive this award.
Here’s another WW1 trenchcat, who would have been ratter, mouser, companion and gas warning - not AFAIK by dying, like a canary, but since cats reacted to the smell of gas long before it was strong enough for humans to notice, the troops had a bit more time to get their masks on, and the cats went into gasproof boxes.
Meanwhile, somewhere on the other side of No Man’s Land…
Meet Percy, mascot of HMLS (D20) “Daphne” with Lt Drader. Both survived the War, and Percy retired to live out his peacetime life in the Drader family home.
(Here’s a video clip; given how noisy, hot and smelly early tanks were, Percy seems remarkably unfazed.)
A US Army tank cat, Mustard of the 321st, with a Renault FT light tank and its driver Sgt Postal…
A Royal Artillery kitten (the battery mascot)…
Pincher of HMS Vindex on what looks like a Sopwith Pup scout…
Togo, ship’s cat of HMS Dreadnought (though I’ve also seen “HMS Irresistible”)…
Ship’s cat of HMS Queen Elizabeth atop 15″ main battery…
And speaking of big ships and big guns…
“Make nice all you like, Human. I despise you. I wanted a billet on a battleship, not this tinpot destroyer…” (Ching, of HMAS Swan.)
the amount of garlic the recipe asks for: 1 clove
the amount of garlic I think the recipe deserves: at least 4 cloves

another thing that is amazing about Wonder Woman that I haven’t heard anybody bring up is that the two strongest Amazons are both played by women in their 50s. Which is NOT old, but in Hollywood years they’re like seniors on their death beds. Once women reach a certain age, they stop getting action roles like that; if WW had been made by a dude, 100 percent Hippolyta and Antiope would have been played by women like 5 years older than Gal.
And they have wrinkles and grey hairs and are still absolutely friggin gorgeous and badass
I’ve thought about this a lot, especially when Robin Wright was talking about training for 2 hours a day (including cardio, weights, combat, and riding) with 50 other women and eating 2500-3000 calories a day. They were unapologetically badass, and unapologetically older because Generals are not 20 years old. It takes time and experience, and that time and experience was shown as a positive, not a negative.
Lost Languages Discovered in One of the World’s Oldest Continuously Run Libraries
Saint Catherine’s Monastery, a sacred Christian site nestled in the shadow of Mount Sinai, is home to one of the world’s oldest continuously used libraries. Thousands of manuscripts and books are kept there—some of which contain hidden treasures.
Now, as Jeff Farrell reports for the Independent, a team of researchers is using new technology to uncover texts that were erased and written over by the monks who lived and worked at the monastery. Many of these original texts were written in languages well known to researchers—Latin, Greek, Arabic—but others were inscribed in long-lost languages that are rarely seen in the historical record.
Manuscripts with multiple layers of writing are known as palimpsests, and there are about 130 of them at St. Catherine’s Monastery, according to the website of the Early Manuscript Electronic Library, which has been leading the initiative to uncover the original texts. Read more.
Reenactor throws a spear at a drone
What a time to be alive.
“The medieval warrior, realizing the consequences of his impulsive act, immediately approached the owner of the drone and offered to pay for the damage.
The owner of the drone was so impressed by the brilliant attack that he suggested organizing a competition for bringing down “dragons” with short spears next year.
Drone owners have another year to develop a unique “dragon-like” design for their flying machines.” (x)
I am 100% cooler with this knowing that the spear-thrower realized “oops maybe I shouldn’t have done that” and tried to make it right, and that the guy who the drone belonged to was cool with it
just so everyone knows, this has already been memorialized in a runestone
Everything about this post blesses those involved with a +4 on their next Today is Good Day roll
I crack up every time at seeing that runestone.

i love this! i feel like whoever arranged it understood why the song is so well loved, and really captured that hopeful, giddy thrill of infatuation. such a bright thing. this is going in my happy spam tag for cheering me up on rainy days.
It was arranged and orchestrated by the woman conducting it and the guy playing the glockenspiel.

“Trick friends into thinking you have your shit together”
Singlehandedly my favorite life hack compilation, below I’ve included my favorites. Read the whole compilation: http://imgur.com/gallery/5991n
1. Put a bunch of shit in jars
You know when you buy rice, pasta, or grains, they come in perfectly good plastic packaging? Well throw them out, pour the contents into big jars, and put them on display. Voila! Oppan cottage-style.
2. Put a hardcover book on your piece of shit bedside table with a bookmark in it.
You were never going to read Crime and Punishment, but you may as well make it look like you did. If you really want to seal the deal, put a pair of glasses that you haven’t worn since high school on top. They’re back in style now, anyway.
3. Get the biggest bowl in your house and fill it with some fucking lemons.
“Better get this out of the way,” you can say just before you sit down for dinner to make sure everyone has seen it, and then never mention it again. Everyone will assume you have jars of homemade lemon curd in your pantry. But I know the truth.
I like this one:
15. Overwhelm your guests by offering them many types of tea.
“Tea? Sure! We’ve just got green, peppermint, chamomile, lady grey, irish breakfast, elderberry, lemon and mandarin, licorice, jasmine, rooibos, cinnamon, or lemongrass.” Just make up the first 10 and end up with the three you actually have in your cupboard; they’ll have forgotten the others by then.
