Mon & Velarde Laureles (2019) Boutique Shop @topfloor_studio @marta_gaviria We started our second shop project since 2019. A tiny and nice shop facing an equally small terrace in a street with central strip with high trees. To enhance the public realm of the intervention we built a delicate stepped public bench crowned with a planter alongside the terrace, deep enough to host new trees, and keeping an existing climber with flowers that goes all the way to the roof. The steps has indirect warm lighting that glow every night til midnight. In the inside we started a rather smaller format for our brand, more focused on smart casual pret-a-porter with more presence of our leather shoes and our vynil record selection, all in a theatrical-like combination of the elements we normally use in our shops: some rough existing finish in some wall, light pine wood, a singular existing floor tiles, corton curtains and our signature display furniture with warm lighting from above coming from hanging spots. Is one of the most challenging projects that I've ever been involved with, but also one of the most gratifying. We launch it just a week before the lockdown started in our city. It's open again. Factory Lofts (2019) Architecture: @nicolasbet @topfloor_studio Collaborators: @andrescastles @kmiposada @imcocowhococo Structural Engineer: Diego Castro Client: Laureles Holdings SAS In 2011 a friend asked me to develop a student´s residence in a lot his family owned in Medellin, in a corner facing both UPB and Carrera 70, just on the border between Laureles and San Joaquín neighborhoods. The obvious venture was a student´s residence due to the University just steps away. When we were about to present the initial scheme to my friend´s family, their father died. While the family were ready to go on with the project, urban regulations changed, and some potential investors put their money into other ventures, different from Real Estate. We started again, knowing that we´ll be ready to find other investors. After some years, almost by chance I found a young canadian investor who was already betting heavily on Medellin, and were developing other buildings in several partnerships. His main interest, aside from business, was to make something that didn't look like the typical boring brick building of Medellin. Against a lot of obstacles, that happily every day are vanishing from my memory, the design survived with minor changes, and the result is a building that all the professionals that were involved in are proud of. A good private building needs first a good developer to come to fruition. INVIAS Competition Entry (2009) Design: @caicedo5995 @juanfer7721 @nicolasbet Collaborators: @marta_gaviria @amarilla00 Carolina Vélez Leonardo Afanador Invias is the government agency in charge of national road network, and is located in Bogotá. Back in the day it was moving from it's then old building, therefore the competition. Happily I was invited to form a team with @caicedo5995 @juanfer7721 and we took inspiration from the steep earth slopes which result from opening new roads in the mountainous zones of Colombia. We started chasing the image of a gap splitting a hill in two while sorting out the program: a bureaucratic office building overlooking the silhouette of the east mountains and the city skyline that melts with it as seen from the distance. Considering that Bogotá is not a hot city, we turned to high performance glass for the facade with all the framing hidden, and some sliding shading panels inside to control the glare. The gap creates an unexpected deep patio with an irregular form which pretends to recreate the road slopes, and actually groups the exposed emergency stairs and the common areas of each floor, where normally you share a coffee with coleagues. The winning project seems to have never been built, at least as it was in the competition. Sabanalarga Square (2015) Architectural Design: @topfloor_studio @alejandro.velez.chelo @321sago @kmiposada @anacasta7 Concrete Furniture: @konkretus.co The town of Sabanalarga is one of the oldest in Antioquia. West of Medellin, and located in the lowlands close to Rio Cauca, the town has less people living in it's urban center than in the rural areas, but has a reall old main square, composed by a century old tree, a lovely and tiny colonial church and it's atrium, some descending steps, a concrete plaque in which several sport activities takes place, and a long bench to take the bus to Medellin. Surrounded by tall and naked mountains, the squre needed just some sober enhancements, rather than start something entirely new. Each one of the elements previously mentioned is updated, while the number of seats available is increased by stripes formed by a sequence of benches/planters/stairs which seems to emanate from the old Ceiba and follow the curves of the geography.
