I’ve gone from growing up with boys to a very female household. My daughters are 17 and 14 and have their whole lives ahead of them. So many of the constraints on women are slowly falling away, but having two daughters has given me extra insight and appreciation, which has really been valuable as a human being. I want my daughters to have every opportunity that life can afford them, regardless of their gender. I also want to travel the world with Mindy and share some places with her that I’ve been lucky to go to. We’ve been together 22 years, and we are in for the long haul. We’re best mates.

My nickname, the Hamster, I owe to a man called Zog Ziegler who, in terms of big breaks, I owe more than anybody else. I took over a motoring show in Lancashire in 1990 and he was the motoring expert on it. I thought his job was amazing. He inspired me to become a motoring commentator. He also inspired me to go and live out Cheltenham way, which is where my wife is from. When we told him we were expecting our first child he clapped his hands together and said, “oh, a little hamster,” so, really, my daughter, Issy, was the first Hamster 🐹 .Still, I would rather my nickname was the Wolf🐺, or the Hawk 🦅
