"Something I've learned while in law school is about the social construction of crime. I work in a legal clinic on wage theft cases, where employers have "improperly paid" workers by not paying, paying below min wage, withholding overtime, paid sick time, etc.
Most theft is wage theft. Meaning, the dollar value of stolen wages is greater than the value, each year, of all burglaries + robberies, shoplifting, auto theft, combined. Yet, wage theft is not a crime."
Below this tweet is an image comparing the cost of robbery, auto theft, burglary, larceny and wage theft in billions. Robbery only hits 0.34 billion, auto theft 3.8 billion, burglary 4.1 billion, larceny 5.3 billion, and wage theft accounts for greater than 19 billion dollars. The data is sourced from the FBI and EPF.
"If you steal $100 from your employer, you will get arrested. If you call the police because your paycheck is $100 light, the police will tell you to file a complaint with the AG, and the AG will settle the case for between $50 and $200.
(That's actually not true, because AG's only take on big cases where thousands of dollars are at stake, but they will settle big cases by typically requiring the employer to properly pay what is owed. No jail, no criminal record.)
If the AG doesn't want to take the case, it will give you a Private Right of Action to sue the employer in civil court for what you are owed, plus damages. It can take a 6 to 18 months to win at trial, and months or years to collect on the judgement if you win.
This is what we mean when we say crime is socially constructed. Not all social harms are criminalized. Not all actors committing social harm are criminalized.
I settled a case for $27k for three clients last year. We spent a MONTH negotiating the non-disclosure agreement because the employer stated if all his employees sued him and settled like this, he would go BANKRUPT. His business model DEPENDED on wage theft.
These employers go on to hold elected office. 45 famously used wage theft to improve his finances on construction projects, leaving a trail of victims in his wake. Some sued and he had to pay them. Others didn't have resources to pursue multi-year litigation + got nothing."
Then the user responds to someone else asking a question.
The question:
"Can you explain this reasoning? Why expanding criminal liability is a bad idea? For whom?"
The user replies:
"What should we do about it? Criminalize employers or decriminalize theft or something else?
Wage theft shows that we believe restitution is important. Giving the money back is important. Currently, AG keeps track of bad actors and will increase future penalties for bad actors.
It also shows when harm is committed, we don't have to lock someone in a cage or label them a felon, both of which destroy years of life even after the sentence is over. We can demand restitution instead of punishment.
It also shows how ridiculous the label "high crime neighborhood" is. And the arbitrary and racist response of police surveillance in HCN. Because we defined it that way.
Consider the social construction of murder:
The people committing the most harm aren't in jail, don't live in high crime neighborhoods. And "black people commit more crime" is true only because of how we have defined crimes, and how we then surveil their community in response to find more crimes.
There are so many orgs trying to address harm and create accountability within community + without incarceration. We call ourselves prison abolitionists.

InsNe that dishwashers are more efficient and easier than just washing them manually but they also use less water. Itās a win win situation
They ALSO sterilize dishes, due to operating at a far higher temperature than human hands could ever tolerate. It's a win every way.
Made this post about 15 minutes after the repair guy who fixed the pump on my dishwasher packed up his tools and left, as the dishwasher was whirring along doing my dishes from that morning.
He said the exact same thing, which I did not know before that, so spreading this knowledge.

post got too long, cleaning it up so it hopefully gets out of "read more" territory. tldr; since the inital post our health has leveled back out but we still have medical bills and last week our mother(who we co-rent our home with) had a heart attack and is now home recovering but will be out of work for AT LEAST 1 month. and bills shure as shit aint gonna stop coming(gotta pay the 120$ phone bill now so mom can stay connected incase she needs anything while we're away!)

That census says that the majority of free Black people were āinsaneā and āidioticā, to use their language, while saying that the majority of people that were still enslaved were sane. So itās creating this idea that to be free and Black, and to have the urge to want to be free and Black, is deemed to be a mental illness.
There was even a medical diagnosis for slaves who had the overwhelming urge to run away: drapetomania. This shows that medicallization has always been a tool of white supremacy in the United States.
Raceāand specifically Blacknessāhas been used to mark disability, while disability has inherently āBlackenedā those perceived as unfit. Black people wereāand continue to beāassumed intellectually disabled precisely because of race. āWork in the Intersections: A Black Feminist Disability Framework by Moya Bailey and Izetta Autumn Mobley
In other words, white supremacy means that Black bodies are seen as inherently disabled, and disability is inherently bad. Ableism and racism are often used as pretexts for each other, which is why itās so important that we use for the intersectional approach that disability justice calls for.ā

Iāve just been reading The Glass Universe by Dava Sobel, about the Harvard women who supported the bulk of astronomy research there over the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While many of them did receive public and academic credit as well as pay - although the university always resisted making any of them faculty until the 1950s - almost allĀ the male astronomers featured were married to accomplished women in their own right, many of them scientists, and you can bet their husbands werenāt putting them on all their papers.Ā
Which has bled into the modern academic world, where many people are expected to do what was essentially a two-person job (filled by male academic + wife) by themselves, or while married to someone else trying to do the same thing. The lack of acknowledgement of womenās work fucks everybody over.Ā

This reminds me of how early film history, it was always the male directorās wife who did the editing of the films, because the cutting and connecting of film strips was considered a lot like sewing. Of course, anyone who knows anything about film and editing can tell you it changes how good a movie is very easily.
Donāt believe me? Look at the differences between the famous Jaws as the publicās release of it (insisted upon by the female editor) and spielberg, the male directorās version of it (missing basic suspense methods, shows the phony shark too much, etc). Same goes for almost every tarantino film. Editing makes or breaks a film and even today, you can bet your socks editing āthe invisible artā was pioneered and is still pushed by women.

Also Tarantino referred to his favorite editor as being kind of like his mom or something and I swear to god the more I see of him, the less I like him.

You know what happens when women type? They EDIT. It is a service they are expected to provide invisibly - not to let a mistake or imperfection show to their husbandās audience, but also not to intrude upon his sense that this is all hisĀ ideas and his labor. Wives are the unacknowledged story and script doctors, and often co-authors for so many supposedly male-authored works.
Also, I second Women Filmmakers in Early Hollywood. Mahar was my history prof for three or four courses and she is incredibly knowledgeable and engaging.Ā

Taylor makes bagged greens, salad kits, chopped salads, the works. Keep avoiding supermarket greens, but keep an especially close eye out for this brand/supplier.
