as someone who relies a lot on mobility aids i LOVE seeing when someone has really personalized their own aids/medical devices or done something fun and pretty with it!! i would do that literally today if I could afford the supplies to do what I want, i looooooove seeing all the cool stuff people do with their disability aids!!

some of the ways that I see this being discussed are like... idk like I don't think we need to make this a new beauty standard. esp as soooo many disabled people are fucking broke but like even aside from that.

like my disability aids let me do things I couldn't do without them. they do not have to be pretty or fashionable, they need to help me survive.

if you can't or don't want to decorate or get the fancy stuff you see people with online, that's literally fine. almost no one does that tbh! the cool ones are exceptions that just get shared widely bc they're beautiful.

i don't need to be reassured that my default cheap mobility aids are pretty or cute. i need people who have full mobility to start noticing inaccessibility in their favorite places and complaining about it.

i need people to not act weird around me or completely ignore my existence when they see my mobility aids, or give me shit about bringing a lot of stuff everywhere bc of my needs that they don't share!

i need abled people to give a shit that disability benefits are almost impossible to get esp if you're poor bc you literally can't work.

and that they are not enough for rent if you're one of the lucky few to even get them.

please know and care that a lot of people in the United States are working and being paid far less than minimum wage because disabled people do not have a minimum wage.

literally, there is no lower limit! my friend was paid 50c/hour and I was paid $1.50/hour (sometimes less!) at the abusive workshop where I was the fastest worker. we all worked there full time and lived in an abusive housing situation run by the same org.

i need abled people to mask up so they don't kill me or another immonocompromised stranger.

i do not need anyone to reassure me about the aesthetic qualities of the tools I use to survive. I need people who are not physically disabled to give a shit about those of us who are.
