Closer to the civil war many slave states made it illegal to free slaves, so the few slaves who managed to buy their freedom then purchased their own family members: wives, children, etc. But they couldn’t free them. It’s not some shameful hypocrisy, people were forced to own their children and their spouses. How fucked up is THAT?
