the new Scrap Mechanic update trailer just dropped and i'm afraid to say: it's peak
It was the first game I ever bought on Steam and while its dev cycle has been long and quiet it's still pretty fun
the trailer definitely has movie magic going on and doesn't do the game justice to its reality but we've been waiting for this update for over 5 years now (I think) so i'm excited regardless
While we were waiting ive hopped on every now and again to fuck around in the creative mode just testing ideas out, but the survival mode changes look pretty engaging, lots more puzzles to solve and parts to solve them with
some of the OG scrap mechanic youtubers got prerelease access to the new survival update and it actually looks great so far, the changes all look really good. cant wait to see the new stuff too
Honestly the state of the gaming industry as a whole and general optimization practices really pisses me off.
Modern software practices too, everything's built on 50 years of gradual bloat and it seems like there's been almost no effort to reduce it.
Windows 11 is a good example, it's pretty much just Windows 7 with multiple layers of interfaces hiding the core functionality.
I get that Linux tries to solves these issues but its interface is too complex for the average person.
We really need a fresh start for all modern software imo, everything rn is just library on top of interface on top of driver on top of port for like 50 levels.
But pretty much everything runs on this bloat, and companies would rather stack CPU on top of CPU on top of RAM on top of RAM to accommodate the bloat instead of cutting it down.
Like imagine a world where an OS is a fraction of the size, or boots up almost instantly.
There'd probably have to be a restructuring of all component architecture to accommodate it but the revisions would fix so many problems with modern computing.
I fear for and also yearn for a singularity where there's just a reset of all computing systems.
Dang I get that feeling. At some point it was my dream to one day create such a thing for the public to use but I've come to realise that that's pretty much what many other popular Linux distros try to acheive as you said
I might be biased since I've used Linux for a long time but I would say that Linux as it is today offers you the option to have anything from the simplest and most easy-to-use OS ever to a full blown studio for software dev, music production or anything more technical
I do encourage any tech normie to try it out honestly, and see for yourself whether or not it works for you
"Waiter! Waiter! There's a Linux user in the reblogs of my post about software optimization!!!"
"Yes sir, it comes free with the #linux tag."
All jokes aside you're right, I definitely need to learn/try Linux at some point outside of bumbling through and nuking a Minecraft server, if only to experience it.
As it stands I don't know nearly enough about software or code right now to do it effectively, and I don't have a real need for it despite my bitching about Windows. I'm working through a bunch of administrative stuff with my whole workflow right now, and Windows is getting me by, but if I need Linux to get something done i'll definitely pick it up and fiddle with it.

Went on those rants cuz I bricked my Minecraft Java server recently and lost the world file. SSL certificate for the server's panel expired and didn't renew itself, I tried to fix it but fucked it up even further. I came back a couple of weeks later and tried to pull the world file, but after a few hours of poking around I fucked it up even further and couldn't even access the terminal anymore. I'd had enough by that point and just went scorched earth. I didn't have anything too impressive on it anyways, just a bunch of farms.
The whole process got me thinking about gaming, to optimization, then general software/hardware practices.

I'm scared about the future of Minecraft, especially Java Edition, with the recent Xbox restructuring news.
Most of Xbox's Minecraft revenue comes from Bedrock downloads and the Bedrock marketplace because of the low barrier to entry.
Java's only really for people who are into modding, have basic file management skills, and have been playing the game since the beginning of the game's lifetime, which according to the statistics accounts for less than 10% of the entire Minecraft playerbase. Probably even less than that tbh.
It's pretty likely given the numbers that Microsoft/Xbox will shelve development on Java eventually to streamline development for Bedrock, and to attempt to mitigate the pending class action lawsuit against them about account migration.
Even if Java keeps parity with Bedrock it's really likely that there won't be any more game optimization on either end. Since Mojang is one of their main cash cows, and they're going to be reporting/getting funding straight from the top now, Xbox is going is going to push new content even more.

This morning I was working on something, and made an interesting metaphorical observation.
The cutting discs used on this rotary tool are very brittle. You can break them with your fingers. However, mounted on a spindle and spun at thousands of RPM, those same fragile discs can cut through steel.
So the next time you’re feeling weak or useless, consider that you may simply not be getting utilized properly, and that your true potential awaits.
Still my favorite motivational post of all time.
This caught me so off guard holy fuck

Very Brief Guide to [tumblr], for Reddit refugees
Shit You Must Do Right Fucking Now:
Change your profile picture, blog header, and title to something other than the defaults. Do it right now. You will be mistaken for a bot otherwise, and blocked.
Go into Settings -> Dashboard, scroll down to Preferences, and turn off the options in the picture. This will get rid of most of the algorithmic stuff.
Turn off Tumblr Live. You have to snooze it once every 7 days for some stupid reason. It's hosted through another company and will steal your data if you use it.
Go to your blog settings (under the little person menu) and turn off these two settings:
Turn off infinite scroll (lags the site) and turn on timestamps on posts, in the same menu as Preferences.
Basic Features of the Site:
Reblogs drive the entire site. If you'd upvote something on Reddit, you'd reblog it on Tumblr. You can add text, images, or tags to a reblog, but you're not required to.
The dashboard is the equivalent to your Reddit feed, and contains the posts of all the people you follow, with the newest at the top
You can send an ask to someone, and it'll appear in their askbox for them to answer. You can receive them too, or turn off the settings if you don't want.
Tags aren't actually used for finding stuff (search function is dogshit), but are more for categorizing. People also talk in tags. Because Tumblr is weird, you can't use quotation marks (") or commas in them without fucking it up
You can filter both tags and phrases under Account Settings; doing this will put a filter over a post that contains them, which you'll have to click through to see the post itself. Useful for avoiding hate speech or blocking out annoying stuff
You can make polls in posts. Here's one now.
holy shit it's a poll
cool!
ooh clicky clicky button!! i wanna press it!! lemme press it!
you can add up to 10 options btw
Likes are useless. They literally do fuck-all except send a notification to the OP.
Stuff Tumblr Does That Other Sites Don't:
Very old posts (I'm talking from like 2012) often circulate on this site. There's no such thing as a post being "too old" to reblog
Blocking is highly encouraged; you can block someone for any reason. Even for just being annoying.
If you and someone else are following each other, you are mutuals. Mutuals are fucking awesome and are treasured like friends. Mutuals are a thing on other sites but Tumblr treats em differently.
You can screenshot someone's tags if you like them and add them to a reblog. This is called "peer review"
Sometimes someone will find a blog and go through it and like/reblog a bunch of posts. This is totally fine and not "creepy" like it is seen as on other sites.
Tumblr jokes often rely on Continuing The Bit and a "yes, and?" attitude. Goncharov is probably the best example of this.
We are fucking infested with bots. They will either have totally blank profiles or be filled with porn. Block and report on sight.
Censorship is pretty lax here. I can say "I want to brutally stab Elon Musk to death and watch him bleed out in front of a crowd" and nobody gives a shit.
General Etiquette:
Don't try to do epic clapbacks here, you'll probably just get laughed at or blocked. If someone is bugging you or spouting bigoted bullshit, block them.
Reblog art!!! Artists often struggle to gain traction on here; reblogging will give them a boost.
Not every reblog needs a comment or tag in it
You can go all out with tagging your stuff to organize it, or you can just leave it all blank. Someone might ask "hey, can you tag these posts as [x]?" and you can decide if you want to do that or not. It's generally polite to oblige, but "no" is still reasonable.
Avoid discourse like the plague. Filter it, block people who start it, scroll past it when you see it. Just don't get involved in it. Ever.
Don't put fandom tags or jokes on someone's posts about serious matters or personal shit
You're responsible for curating your own dashboard; if you complain about constantly seeing stuff you don't like, that's probably on you. Don't be afraid to unfollow.
Follower count doesn't matter much here and you don't have to make yours known if you don't want to.
Reblog, don't repost. Reblogging keeps the credit and doesn't "steal" engagement like Twitter retweets.
If someone likes something a LOT, they might reblog it like 30 times in a row. This is normal
Having a post blow up is actually kinda a bad thing, since it floods your notifications. There's a sort of in-joke about how having a big post is awful and people jokingly try to stop their own posts from blowing up, often in vain.
Tips:
Get XKit Rewritten if you're on desktop, it's a really helpful extension
In the little drop-down menu next to the 'Post now' button you can either save a draft, schedule a post, or add it to your queue. The queue lets you post things in order at a certain interval, which you can change. It's good for spreading stuff out over time.
You can use Shift+R to quickly reblog stuff and Shift+Q to queue!
Filter your notifications under Activity - you can also see some neat graphs
Find each other! If you want your old Reddit communities to stick together, seek out other refugees and follow them.
Have fun on [tumblr], everyone!
