Understatement of the year. Truthfully, it’d be the kind of party Chance would find lame, if someone described it to him. But the group energy is contagious, and so is Will’s smile, under the now lit backyard string lights. He sips his soda and feels a little drunk anyway.

this is such a nice version of this but probably not true in my case. I don’t think my voice is terrible but I have 0 vocal training so definitely nothing special. I still love to recreationally belt to sing in the shower/car kind of songs though for sure

The LOTR musical. It’s like bad good good bad a very weird project (not a nostalgia bait back to the future musical kind of situation) I think if you like LotR and are musically inclined you can’t help but have an open heart to it

I am going to rb this post with a josh henry performance some to most to all (?) days between now and the tonys. this will prevent this blog from being full hater and also if u are with me for this chapter of this journey i hope you too will delight in his win on sunday, june 7th
this is from the show he should have won his first tony for in 2014 (!!!) imo. also one of the best meetings of song 🤝 performer in theater history of all time in kind of a random musical (but he also played this role in college!!!!!! and was so excited to subsequently do it on broadway with SUTTON FOSTER!!!!!!!). also 2 me the robin's 504 monologue in musical theater number form
did not do this probably for the best but was talking about will in relation to BATB certainly think whatever version of him would Appreciate this performance. from a craft perspective. obviously

the thing with el is that the duffers are very obviously trying to keep her ending open so they can bring her back in the future if they decide to make another project.
I know this is a common line of argument (especially "el is functionally dead BUT we know there's going to be a sequel in xyz amount of time...") but I also don't agree with it lol. I think there is a way that is also doing the cynical = smart thing which idk, just doesn't feel right to me in this context? I don't see any reason to not believe the duffers about their feeling right now being that this is the end for these characters. I think that seems pretty natural even if it doesn't stay true depending on the paycheck offered after some time away. (Ppl believe they have more integrity than they do all the time lol.) I also don't think that needs to have informed the narrative decision making for el to be alive which my feeling about comes from my read of the way the finale played out.
that also isn't me thinking a sequel will never happen but I do think it will be shaped by market forces we have no concept of atm (ie, just a few years ago it didn't seem like the mcu or star wars would ever run out of steam and we're in a weird moment on both those, etc). there are a lot of ways to legacy sequel, some of which may not even have been discovered yet.
Sticking with the El is alive and doing well for herself narrative now is the better deal cause who tf is gonna wait 20 years to find out if that’s true or not like stranger things is not worth giving that much time.

I feel like I sometimes sound like a broken record, but I just want to point out that the "absolutely everything means something" approach to analysis does not accurately reflect how long-form TV production works. It's almost impossible for everyone to be on the same page about absolutely everything. While many background details and hints regarding major plot points can intentionally be put there for people to notice and analyse, the final product is at the mercy of so many different things: a shifting writers room, costume and set designers who have their own trademarks, the script landing differently in the hands of actors with their own quirks and inflections... the list goes on. Ideas go through so many levels before they hit the screen.
I was thinking about this after watching this great video essay about how Gravity Falls, which is my favourite show of all time, was written. Overall, it stands as an incredible example of how to plan and execute a long-con mystery with engaging hints and details -- but also a great example of how fandoms sometimes don't understand how TV production works and as a result can overly-mythologise the *power* of showrunners and details and how it all comes together. Even something like GF, which is upheld as like the golden standard of mystery shows, had its fair share of animation errors and stuff made up on the fly. IMO, the difference is that the GF production team -- unlike that of ST -- had a clear understanding of the scope of the show, and were also great at improvising and making sure they did something with the unplanned ideas they threw in there, but that's not the point of this post haha.
This is part of why the "media literacy yadayayda" stuff that constantly gets used as a "gotcha" argument in conspiracy shipping/analysis rubs me the wrong way. Media literacy isn't just about how far you can read into things. In the context of fandom discussion, it's about understanding that shows are works of fiction and thus are at the mercy of the environment it was produced in (both the product itself and what themes/meanings are communicated within it and how). You can't always analyse and make accurate predictions as if it were something completely independent of the production environment. You need to understand the context of the work and the associated limitations of said context. Obligatory 'yes we can still point out and criticise bad writing' note, but I also just want to acknowledge the nuance here and how fandom environments can also contribute to disappointment.
This got kind of rambly and might not be super concise or thought-out but it's something I've been thinking about as a kind of ex-bylr (??? or at least as someone who participated in this kind of flawed analysis when I was a younger teen. And I'm not necessarily just talking about ships here, but also about the overall show lore and how disappointing it is. It's frustrating, but also not a mystery about how it got to that point).
