Keith isn’t following Shiro. Or spying on him. Not purposefully, anyway. He’s been restless since their last fight in Voltron. Whilst they were successful, heavy unanswered questions hover too close behind him. Every step, shadows creep a little closer. Closing his eyes would mean letting darkness take hold and for the first time in a long while Keith isn’t sure what he would see. He doesn’t like not knowing things, not having answers.

So he walks. Just like he’d do in the desert sometimes. Aimless, without purpose or direction. Until he feels a different weight, a tug. Takashi Shirogane. And his entire focus shifts without reserve. Curiosity is piqued, because Shiro being awake at this hour must mean he hasn’t even considered sleeping. Why exactly, Keith can’t know for sure. But he can guess.

He doesn’t want to entertain any of the possibilities.

As he rounds the corner, a good few yards behind, Keith finds himself almost stumbling into Shiro’s back. Coming to an abrupt halt, Keith freezes. Well. He’s definitely been busted.

“Guess not.” He offers with a shrug, arms folded across his chest. “But that doesn’t change me being awake.”

Frown. Should he ask? Can he ask? Stepping forwards, Keith purses his lips.

“Everything seems pretty secure around here so…- you should probably get some rest yourself. It was a tough battle earlier for us.”

{ For a moment, his stony expression sticks, static, unyielding to the warmth his friend never fails to bring. It’s not until Keith suggests rest that he remembers himself and softens. Crumbles like a wall of sand yielding to the sea, tense posture loosening. Open, though his own gaze flicks away, not meeting the other’s. }

“ I don’t usually.. sleep after a big fight. Too wound up. ”

{ Manages a smile, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. }

“ So much for curfew, huh? Welcome to the night life. Lucky for you, I’ve got a bike! We can take a ride around town, maybe break stuff. What do you think? ”

He walks the halls like a ghost, habitually quiet. Expression turned stern a few circuits ago, each step separating him further from himself, feeling his thoughts drift from attention to null. Drifting, deciding how best to stand in front of each member of his team, how to wholly protect them. Scenarios and positions, he would be their guardian.

He knows he’s being followed. The doors here don’t open quietly enough to be missed. He’s counted the steps and stops at 734 this circuit. Half turns, staring down the hall. }
