Drizella let out a sharp, triumphant honk of laughter. 

She had a lead! Never mind that a small child had almost perished (an exaggeration, of course — note to the paparazzi in Drizella’s head, no child was actually harmed in the making of this roller skating race). She could win! 

She took the first lap triumphantly, pumping both fists in the air.

“Catch me if you can!” she shouted.

Swearing softly under his breath, Maximus had to start slow and build up speed again, and by then Drizella had already pulled far ahead of him.

With part of his attention, he couldn't help noticing her here. The laugh still echoed in his head, and he could see the sharp flash of her smile as she passed him. The speed of her skates. Her ass -

He shouldn't be noticing her ass. This was a friend hang out. No longer a date.

(It didn't help that it was distracting him when he needed to focus.)

"Don't get cocky Driz!" he called out, pushing to try and close the gap between the two of them.

Tod snickered behind a cough into his sleeve as Barbara started laying into Maximus about his overworking. It was cute to him.

No one ever cared how much Tod was working. No one kept track.

And he was delighted for a glimpse into Maximus' childhood. He had been a few years younger than the Swynlake native. They had missed each other in school. And Tod had only been there for a few years anyway.

He gave Maximus a look torn between amusement and pity at having his shit aired out. Thankfully, Barbara knew no such stories of Tod's youth. And there were plenty.

"That so?" Tod said, sharing a conspiratorial look with Barbara. "Must be a helluva smile."

Barbara laughed. "And you! I'm sure you were a rascal, Tod. If you were ever like your mother. That was a wild child, if I ever saw one." She shook her head. "Thinking back, perhaps it wasn't surprising--"

"I was," Tod said, taking pity on the woman who had clearly thought she just put her foot in her mouth. Which she kind of had, but Tod didn't mind. He knew his mother's behavior was erratic better than anyone. "Complete rascal, actually."

Okay. Maybe coffee wasn't a complete loss.

It was one of the stranger parts of being back in town. In an odd twist, most of his contemporaries had left to start other adventures. But the people of his parents' generation were all still here and he knew them all. Drizella and Chief had been the only ones to really see that side up close, and both of them were complicated now. He wasn't entirely sure how to socialize under these conditions.

He clocked the sudden rise of tension and the way Tod smoothed it over. Curious. He'd have to ask his mother for the gossip there. Or maybe he'd wait. In case it came up on its own.

"Well I'm sure you two will enjoy sharing stories. Ah, George, here they are! I told them they aren't allowed to keep being wallflowers."

The man of the hour still stood tall and straight, silvering hair glinting in the light overhead. He'd 'relaxed' by wearing an ironed polo shirt with his slacks instead of the suit he'd often worn for long days in the office. He had an easy charming grin as he looked around at all the people that came to celebrate him.

"Well well well look at the both of you. Thank you for coming on by."

"Wouldn't miss it," Maximus said briefly. "Congratulations on making it to your retirement. Any big plans?"

“Oh yeah, definitely not a different game on every screen sort of place.” Phillip shook his head. He’d seen a few American bars pop up on his TikTok FYP and it seemed like a sensory nightmare. “We’ll have a couple of TVs and yeah, when it’s a big game do a watch party — but on the day-to-day it’ll be more of a social place, y’know?”

Part of the reason why he wanted to open this pub was because he felt like Pierrot’s and The Court didn’t have that. Oh sure, they had many good things — performances, dancing, great drinks, and great fun. But they weren’t really places to talk.

“Game on in the corner for those who want it, but I mostly want it to be a place to just gather. Shame I can't magically get it ready in a month for the World Cup though." He laughed. "I guess I'll just have to pop on over to NTO."

"I've already accepted I'll be watching the cup on my tiny office tv," he said with a small sigh. His TV at home was better (not that that was difficult), but with his shifts being what they were, plenty fo the games would stretch into his later shifts.

It was nice to think that maybe next year he could at least pop in somewhere else during his rounds. For a few minutes here and there.

"Sounds like you've got the basics in play and a strong idea. What was it you needed me for again?" The question was slightly teasing, but he as also curious. After all, it wasn't like Phil was someone who needed a confidence boost.

"Okay," Judy replied with a small smile, taking her own mug of coffee and putting a dash of milk in and a spoonful of sugar before she sat down across from her boss. At least they could wait out the car disaster in a comfortable space.

And Imo glanced over at the sheriff, her own smile spreading across her face. "Thank you that's very kind. It's a Ginseng Chicken Soup," the woman explained as she added another ingredient to the pot. "It has chicken of course, rice, jujube and ginseng. Traditionally we make this soup a lot more during the summer."

Judy nodded, taking a small sip of her coffee. "It can seem sort of contradictory to make soup when it's hotter, but we believe that you fight heat with heat. If a meal is spicy enough it can help regulate your temperature more and help you sweat."

Imo piped in then, "You know I keep asking when Judy will bring a man home," and Judy winced, ducking her head to avoid glancing at Maximus. "But naturally the first time anyone comes by really it's her boss," Imo remarked with a laugh. "Ja, Imo don't.... let's not get into that," Judy grumbled. "Sorry sir," she added quickly.

Maximus gave a small nod at the explanation. "Understandable." He couldn't think of any clear food traditions like that to compare it to, but his childhood had been filled large with the British classics of bangers and mash. It was only occasinally his parents would stray beyond that into other food traditions. Jollof rice was truly the only thing they made consistently like that, and it wqas mostly whenever someone had the energy.

He was more amused than anything else at Mrs. moon's comment. After all, she was hardly the first elderly table he'd sat at making that kind of comment.

"Judy is an exceptional woman who works hard for her community. It only makes sense that it would take time for her to find someone that can live up to that."

“Now Officer Keaton please.” Beau tried to reason. “Is that what both of these youngsters have decided to do? Do they both have council?” It was one thing to acknowledge his daughters troubles himself but all of this must be some lover squabble.

The footage was alarming but even he didn’t notice how feral his daughter was. The screws coming loose on the screen were not his concern. What was going to happen to her was.

“I assure you my daughter will not let something like this happen again.” Beau remained stern. Cleaning his throat as a signal for Lottie.

“Sir..” she finally spoke. “I don’t really think Kovu would press a single charge on me!” Her lip pouted. “June only wants to to make me look bad…she’s just jeal—“

“LOTTIE ENOUGH!” The father’s booming voice came from the other side of the phone. “Officer Keaton please get on with it what charges are we looking at. Tell the truth now too young man or I will call for your direct supervisor. This should be nothing more that community service.”

Maximus's voice went colder. "Sheriff Keaton. As I introduced myself at the beginning of this call." He had been willing to let it slide as long as the conversation kept moving. But that was before the man had started laying down threats of his own.

But he would not be bullied by this American.

"At this time I am suspending this interview. Miss Labouff will be escorted back to the cell until we have confirmed the exact nature of the charges being filed against her. At that time you will receive a follow up call to ensure that you are present as Miss Labouff's representative for the follow up interview."

He wasn't interested in fatherly assurances. There was a due process to follow and the victims to provide support for. That was what mattered at this moment in time.

"Well, I'll call him George, if you'd like," Tod said, somewhat cheekily.

He didn't have quiet as much of an attachment to things like hospital hierarchy. Of course, he minded in the moment, when it mattered, but outside of work, he tended to call his colleagues by their first names anyway. And he didn't mind what they called him. (Considering both his names were first names, even being called "Mitchell" was rather normal and casual to him.)

Plus, he liked being a little bit of a shit, when the occasion called for it.

Barbara shook her head.

"But same," Tod continued. "Figured we'd wait our turn for George to make the rounds and what not."

Maximus had to bite back the urge to smile at Tod's response, quickly hiding it behind another sip of his coffee. He had a feeling Barbara knew anyway, but they could all pretend they didn't.

"Well I say its your turn now. He'll be so pleased that you both took the time to come see him, what with how busy your schedules are."

She started to bustle them both towards the small knot of people on the other side. Maximus moved at a very...deliberate pace through the group. After all, why rush?

"I mean, really Maximus, Swynlake isn't like London. You really should be taking more time off to visit with people around town. We hardly ever see you except when you're on official business, and that's hardly the right time to stop and chat now is it?"

Conversations like this were exactly why he generally avoided social gatherings with people who had known him as a child. They never seemed to get any better.

Turning towards Tod, she said with a conspiratorial smile. "Mind you, Maximus was a frequent visitor to George back in the day. He was always in and out of one scrape with his friends. Nearly every town disaster he had some excuse for being in the middle of it! But he'd give you that big earnest grin, and who was going to disbelieve him then?"

There went coffee he was pretty sure. And anything else.

Florian chuckled at that. It was funny how people imagined schools running, most especially children, and the way some of those questions were never answered. It absolutely was Florian who spent valuable hours of his life cutting letters and shapes out of card and felt to pin up on the various display boards around the room. It was also him who had to fill up the various jars of pens, pencils, erasers and rulers for the children to use - the children who assumed they refilled themselves magically when they accidentally took their pencil home and lost it.

"You know, you'd think in Swynlae the classrooms would magically redecorate themselves." Florian said with a smile. "Maybe that's something to look into."

He looked over at Maximus again, though this time a small crease formed between his brows. "Don't tell me you don't take any time off?" Florian asked. The horses plodded along, Lucy's steady gate making him sway a little. "Maybe I'm spoiled by my two weeks off every other month, but everyone needs a little time to relax."

"You would think. I'd say you should report back, but if you do crack it I'm sure you and all the other teachers will be sworn to secrecy." After all, most good conspiracies involve a little secrecy, and he could see the teachers taking advantage. They worked hard enough as it was.

Besides, he was the last person to judge people finding magic that made their jobs a little easier to take care of other people.

Maximus felt the small shift as Florian looked over at him and he shrugged. "I take off a day here or there, but I rarely take off more than that. I'm not very good at relaxing. Even on my days off I usually do some work. But you probably understand that better than most as a teacher. Like you said, rooms don't decorate themselves and the prep has to happen sometime."

It was strange having her boss in her home like this. More strange because of how awkward she felt after the emails and...well all of that. Ideally though they would simply sit for a cup of coffee and then the car would be fixed or towed and they'd be on their way again.

Her aunt looked over from where she seemed to be fixing up dinner ahead of time. "Oh, it's no trouble at all! Welcome to our home," Mrs. Moon greeted the sheriff, wiping her hands on her apron before she turned so she could do so more properly. "Come in and sit down. Something to drink?" She offered then, and Judy stepped forward toward the coffee machine.

"I'm on it Imo. I'll get us some coffee set up. Don't worry." Judy didn't want her aunt to start stressing about the unexpected guest. She could take care of it all. "And before you say no, recognize that I can do the coffee part but not what you're working on," Judy added with a wry smile. This at least seemed to refocus her aunt and have her turning back to her cooking.

Judy set up the filter and poured in the coffee, shutting it and starting the machine. She then pulled out two mugs and set them out on the table near the kitchen and spoons for each in case they wanted any sugar in or milk and to stir it up. "Do you want anything extra in your coffee sir?"

Maximus was tempted to smile at the clear familiarity to that small interaction. It had all the flavor of an argument nearly worn smooth with how often it had happened, so much so that only a few phrases needed to take up the whole of a months long conversation. he had plenty of arguments like that with his own parents.

He sat down at the table so he didn't interrupt any of the flow in the kitchen between the two women. Considering he was already an imposition, he didn't want to hear what Jun would say to know the Sheriff had delayed dinner.

"Black is fine, thank you." As he took the cup of coffee, he took a sip. He had to admit, this was a lot better than what they were drinking at the station. "Can I ask what you're preparing? It smells fantastic."

Drizella hoped she wouldn’t fall flat on her face.

That would be a good story though — not even two meters into the race and Drizella Tremaine sprawled on the rink like a ragdoll. She bet Max would stop to help her and then she’d tug him down with her so that neither of them would win. And maybe he’d be butthurt about it but she’d laugh and then he’d laugh and —

Drizella pushed that hypothetical scenario out of her mind. She grit her teeth and she skated. 

Her arms pumped back and forth and back and forth. She let out several unladylike grunts.

She nearly smashed right into a stranger, but managed to swerve, though that meant she careened wildly out of the way and lost some of her lead.

Damnit!

Maximus grinned as he began to push forward. Considering he went running nearly every day, this shouldn't be too bad. Somedays, his knees gave him a little trouble, but that was just part of getting older and he preferred to keep in shape as he could.

He was almost positive he worked out more than Drizella. Almost. That should make this easy. Right?

Watching Drizella careen away had his grin widening as he started to push forward. Perfect, he could use that time to build up a good lead, and -

"What the hell?"

A small child suddenly skated directly in front of him, laughing loudly and swerving, and he skidded, attempting to stop so he didn't crash right into the child.

Pretty sure that murdering a child during a roller skating date was a bit of a moodkiller.

But it meant any potential lead had just been swallowed up. Again.

Beau scoffed through the phone.

“Did you just say installed a camera. Gator niblets you have got to be kidding me.”

Lottie froze like a deer in headlights - face stunned and mouth creeping to the side with guilt. She didn’t say another word.

“You send that link my way.” The secure number was rattled off right after. “Now officer while I wait for your footage please excuse me while I have a word with my daughter.”

Lottie’s cheeks flushed.

“I thought I told you the days of boy chasing was done! I didn’t spend a years tuition off the cuff to send you across the ocean to find some reform only for you to go single white female! Who was this boy?! You are on thin ice missy- Ope…”

He stopped abruptly. “I’ve got the link…please officer please give me a moment.”

Maximus was ready with his notepad as soon as Mr. Labouff started to rattle off the number, so he caught each of them as it was written down. they'd check it before they sent the footage, but he was reasonably confident.

Going back to the door, he quickly passed the sheet of paper and the instructions to the officer standing there. It gave the man his few moments of privacy and kept things moving.

As he sat back down again, he heard the fatherly chastisement and his lips tightened again. This was why he preferred to deal with actual lawyers. But he quietly made some notes to follow up on Lottie's history before she came here. If this was part of a pattern, he might need to speak to the New Orleans police there.

Even if her case had been buried, there would be notes and there would be articles. He had a feeling he was going to need a file on her before long.

Once he'd given the man enough time to watch the video, he said, "As you can see, there is no mistake. Mr. Morake and Ms. von Drake are well within their rights to press charges. This will be going on her record." He let that echo as he looked directly at Lottie.

It should be fine. She hoped it would be fine. Things were awkward enough between Judy and her boss without anything weird happening at home. She really needed it to be relatively calm. That would be the ideal.

She led her way up to the farmhouse, stepping up onto the front porch and pulling out her key to unlock the door. "Well... welcome to the Moon farm. Please take off your shoes if you can. We don't wear them in the house." She removed her own immediately and pulled on a pair of house slippers that they kept by the entryway.

"Imo?" Judy called out, checking to see if her aunt was in the house. "In the kitchen Judy!" The woman called in return. Judy turned to Maximus. "Coffee's in there," she said, though he could probably assume that. She stepped away from the door and headed for the kitchen.

"Very well." He slipped out of his shoes, revealing socks as crisp and clean white as the rest of his uniform before following her into the house.

He'd never actually been here before, despite how long the Moons had been in town. In general, he'd always interacted with them at the Market even as a kid. It was a comfortable looking home. Neat, but with the signs of life that showed a family lived there and not the kind of robots the wealthy sometimes raised who barely left a dent in the carpet they walked across. He could see a glimpse of the farm through the window, but not much more than that as he walked through.

He followed Judy into the kitchen, keeping his hands laced behind his back. As they came into the space and he saw the elderly Mrs. Moon, he bowed his head to her. "Sorry to disturb you, ma'am. I hope your day is going well."

Phillip grinned.

Look — Max was, like, the ideal target audience for this sort of thing. A man’s man — the sheriff! A Swynlaker. And yes, Phillip was aiming to make the place more friendly and welcoming than the Deer, but hey, if he wasn’t pleasing the target demographic then what was he even doing?

“Anything else you think an ideal pub should have? I was thinking darts and a billiards table too.”

"Those are sounding good. And I know you mentioned having a place to watch the game, but I hope you're not going for one of those, there's a new tv every time you turn your head a quarter of a degree so you can't escape the sight of a television. Sometimes you just want the food and the drink. Or to actually focus on what the person you're with is saying."

As fun as sports could be in a group, he often craved quiet after an especially long day. Plus it was hard to flirt with someone over a pint if everyone else in the room was screaming.

Coffee at Maximus' house told a completely different story.

Again, it was possible that Tod was reading into things because he wanted to be reading into things. Because Maximus was fit and Tod wanted him to be into him. Or because Tod hadn't had any luck, really, with the letters and not that he'd admit it to anyone...but it had been a blow to his ego.

Or maybe he was just lonely.

Either way, Tod knew what option he was going to choose.

"Hmmmm--well, a homebrewed coffee certainly feels more appropriate considering the transgression," he said, his gaze still over by the group that had been laughing. He turned to Maximus and gave him a little smile.

Maximus felt a small spark at the answer. After all, it could end up being nothing more than coffee. He wasn't going to put any pressure on it. But the choice implied looking for privacy which suggested some more interesting possibilities.

"Perhaps if you wanted -"

"Maximus! Tod! What are you still doing over here?"

He managed to avoid wincing but only barely, instantly feeling that spark of guilt at setting up a potential hookup instead of socializing like they were supposed to. He was here wasn't he? Wasn't that good enough?

"Hello Barbara. I didn't want things to be too crowded around Dr. Sitwell."

"Considering this party, don't you think its about time you started to call him George?"

"No." Just the idea of it made his skin crawl.

Barbara sighed and looked over at Tod. "I suppose you're going to give me the same excuse?"

Florian was, admittedly, surprised by that. Maximus seemed so straight-laced that he just hadn't expected it. But maybe that was what being sheriff, holding a position of such authority, did to a person. No one was the same their entire life, were they?

He couldn't quite hide the way he looked over at Maximus, mildly surprised, eyebrows arched. But Florian's expression quickly settled into a smile, followed by a rueful shake of his head. Boys would be boys, wasn't that how the saying went? Florian was sure he had done similar things, in his own youth.

"I can only imagine." He said. "But, yes-- end of July until the start of September. I have to take down all of this year's decorations, and start lesson planning for next year, but I try to take off as much time as I can."

Lucy was a steady presence beneath him, guiding them forward along the trail even as Florian looked over at Maximus. "We get all of the halfterm holidays and things too, but those two weeks... well, they go quite quickly. I think most of us end up working them. But the summer's the best time to have off anyhow. Good weather, lots going on in town, plenty of opportunities to take this one," He patted Lucy's neck, earning a nod of her heavy head, "Out into the forest. I certainly can't complain about the schedule - I don't think I'd survive a schedule like yours." He chuckled.

Maximus caught the quick look of surprise and felt the beginnings of a smile in return. It felt good to surprise the other man, even in such a little way.

So many people saw who he was on the surface and assumed that was everything. It was a fair assumption - one he encouraged most of the time for a myriad of complicated reasons. But at the same time, there were moments where it could get exhausting to only ever be one thing. He needed those little bits of a break.

"You mean the classrooms don't redecorate themselves just because you ask? There goes one of those urban myths from growing up," he joked.

"Still, sounds like a good plan to cover the next couple months. My schedule means that I can technically take time off any time of year if I need it. In practice, I haven't had much reason to take the time and its easier to be consistent so the rest of my tea can take their vacations when they need it. But we'll see if that changes."

Lottie kept her lips sealed as she looked from her glittery pink phone to Officer Keaton. Eyes darting back and forth.

“Now I am going to need you to slow down bit and give me that back again.” Beau cleared his throat. “My ears fell dead when you said resisting arrest. I find that hard to prove off word. Is there any files I can get sent over to my office via message.”

Big daddy did not play around when it came to legalities. A man true to his word and accountability - he also knew how to lesser a blow. Especially for his little pumpkin.

Lottie hiccuped at the mention of resistance. “Oh daddy I didn’t resist! I swear it!” Her father was quick to corral her.

“Now Lottie you keep quiet. Now you hear me. Let me and the officer talk.”

There were people who would find that folksy Southern American accent charming. Maximus only heard 'Congressman' and looked back at the pretty little pop star who had been waving her knife around not too long ago.

Perhaps in the US she was used to her father buying her out of trouble. She would learn differently.
