Trados source text looks all scrambled up

And it looks like there is text thats from right to left and left to right over each other.

This was from a Microsoft Word 2016 docx file that was extracted from a PDF. Not sure if that has anything to do with it, but likely it does. I’ve tried all Word filters available, but nothing helped. 

The solution then came from Trados Support. Thanks!

You have to switch “Formatting display style” to “Show all tags but do not show formatting”.

In Trados Studio, when you try to open a Adobe InDesign CC file, you often see this error message: “Pre-Scanning Error: The selected IDML file was created by an unsupported version of Adobe InDesign and will not be processed”.

This is because the InDesign file versions can change very quickly and Trados does not guarantee that they can process it correctly. But really, 99% of the time it just works fine.

So you can disable this warning/error message:

Just go into your project settings, choose the InDesign CS4 - CC filetype and check “Process unsupported file versions”. And you should be fine.

Remember: You can change settings on a per project setting or global for all FUTURE Trados projects. For an individual project, click on “Project Settings” on the Ribbon. For Trados in general, go to File -> Options.

SDL Trados Windows all messed up

Nothing new here. And there is an easy fix. Just go to the View tab and click on Reset Window Layout.

Fixes lots of other strange Trados problems too.

If you don't want to translate the notes in a Microsoft Power Point file, there is a very simple solution in SDL Trados Studio.

Go to Project Settings -> File Types -> Microsoft Power Point -> Notes and Shapes and chose "Exclude notes" in the Notes dropdown.

Trados 2011: Failed to create temporary folder

Since a while all of our PC's in the office get the following error message when we try to start SDL Trados Studio 2011:

Failed to create temporary folder:

C:\Users\Usersname\AppData\Local\Temp\_ir_tu2_temp_0

Nothing really bad, but it does prevent the automatic update from working.

One solution is to start Trados with Admin rights. The other is to change the security settings  for the Temp folder. Just right click on the folder and give "Everybody" the "Modify rights.

Problem solved.

Translate Microsoft Visio in SDL Trados Studio 2011

Unfortunately Trados Studio does not support the translation of Viso documents yet. One way to manually do it, is to convert the Visio Document into an Excel, translate the Excel file and then manually copy the strings back into Visio. Not pretty, but it work. Specially since there are normally not that many strings in a Visio file.

But it's much easier now with the Microsoft Visio Filter für SDL Trados Studio from tracom. With this filter you can translate Visio files in Trados directly.

If you wanna save the 450 Euro, Supertext can translate Visio files for you.

SDL Trados Studio 2011 User Manual

We all know that the included user manual from SDL Trados Studio 2011 is not really a pleasure to read through. It's great as a reference, but I wanna see the person that reads in on their kindle in their beach-chair. Not that I'm planning to read any trados books on the beach, but SDL Trados Studio - The Manual written by Mats Dannewitz Linder is a much easier read.

Unexpected error while loading the application plug-ins

This problem can normally be fixed easily by deleting all files in this directory:

Trados Studio 2010:

%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\10.0.0.0

Trados Studio 2009 SP3:

%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\9.1.0.0

You can just copy/paste this into your File Explorer. Or replace %userprofile% with

C:\Users\YourName

You should see these files in there:

BaseSettings.xml

plugincache.xml

UserSettings.xml

Just delete them all. Trados will recreate them during the next start. You will loose all your special settings, but that's the price you have to pay.

You can't see these files? Maybe your Windows is setup to hide these files?

Start the File Explorer. 

Press "Alt" T and O

This should open the Folder Options.

Choose the "View" tab

Here you can change which files are displayed:

Show hidden files, folder and drives

Hide extensions for known file types

Hide protected oprating system files

This should do it.

By the way: A similar error in the German version of Trados is "Während des Ladens der globalen Plug-in-Dienste ist ein unerwarteter Fehler aufgetreten". You can solve it with the same approach.

Did SDL Trados Studio export all XE Tags with two quotation marks?

And you tried to just replace them in Microsoft Word 2010? Yeah, that doesn't work. You have to replace them with the exact ALT Code and it works.

Another one lovely SDL Trados Studio 2011 error:

Missing tag <field i=”_2” name”XE” /> in segment 3814. Please run the Tag Verification to see details.

But this is actually easy to fix. Just open the file indicted in the File column and go to segment 3814. If you compare the source and the target segment, you should see a tag that is missing. Just copy it over from the source and you should be good.

Today: hexadecimal value 0x1F is an invalid character

This means that there is a sign in the sdlxliff that SDL Trados does not like. Actually, no XML editor would like it. No idea how it got in there in the first place, but it's easy to fix. This can happen for other signs than 0x1F too.

Just download notepad++ or any UTF-8 compatible text or XML editor.

Open the corresponding sdlxliff file (close Trados beforehand) in notepad++

Search&Replace for &#x1F; and replace it with nothing (e.g. keep the replace field empty). Often there is more then one, so make sure you catch all.

Done

You should be able to open it in Trados now and create the Target Translation.
