people make fun of mtg players who think that adding spongebob and teenage sloptant mutant pizzas to the game diminishes it because "well its just a card game its silly anyway" which is just frankly really dumb. it is normal to value a specific tone in art and media! i wager most people wouldnt like it if they were watching a serious thriller film and halfway through a cartoon rabbit walked on screen and starting pantsing the hero every other scene--doesn't mean that they are Taking Movies Too Seriously, it means they think extreme bathetic tonal dissonance undercuts many elements of film that they enjoy. perfectly sensible thing to think innit
A frustrating part of the mainstream vegan “love all animals and protect the environment” mindset is the fact that things need to die in real-life ecology all the time but deer hunting season makes icky feelings and carp culls aren’t cottagecore
The vegan “any animal death ever is morally wrong” mindset doesn’t hold up when:
We don’t have any of the large predators we used to (black bears, mountain lions, or gray wolves) but still retain large deer populations. If nothing is removing animals, they’ll quickly overload the carrying capacity of the environment and have massive losses to starvation and disease that can also pass on to livestock. Human hunters replace the large predators that our landscape can no longer support.
It’s kinder to euthanize an un-releasable hawk rather than try to find it a permanent home with humans. Wildlife rehabs have extremely limited space and resources and are usually run entirely on donated money and volunteer time. Only a few are large and stable enough to care for permanent residents long-term, and those spots are few and far between.
An invasive species poses a danger to threatened native wildlife. I will admit- Australian possums are adorable. But not in New Zealand, where they’re an invasive species that eats the eggs of ground-dwelling birds that previously had no such predators. The landowners I worked with replanting native bush, all native Maori, had no qualms about setting the dogs on them.
I don’t know how to end this except. Sometimes things just gotta die and acting otherwise just isn’t a realistic expectation.
Highlights from the notes over the past 6 months include a lot of angry vegans saying “you’re blowing things out of proportion, no vegans actually think like this!” and a lot of people who work in conservation and education saying “Every day. I have to fight people who think like this.”
As a bonus this post was originally inspired by the vegan who called me racist for saying we should kill invasive species
I've asked this question before and been surprised by the results, now I have access to more weirdos it's your problem:
It is the middle of a Sunday afternoon. You have nothing on, and aren't expecting visitors, deliveries or post.
Unexpectedly, there is a knock at the door.
Which of these would surprise you more to find on the doorstep?
Fairy
Walrus
Not naming options to skew votes but...
I think there's something fundamentally baffling with the way most of you think.
Happy birthday to this iconic poll
Fuck, that "mental gymnastics" image still makes me so unreasonably angry. I know I should just let people be ridiculously wrong and not worry about it. I know. In a world with people who believe in homeopathy or think that Trump is a good president or think that lucid dreams are them literally traveling to another reality there's no point in engaging with this stuff.
I know that.
But man, the idea that "I guess fairies exist" is the simpler answer is just so fundamentally wrong and stupid that it hurts. And at first, I thought I was being smooth sharked or something. I was sure this was like those ads for mobile games where it shows someone playing a game super badly on purpose so you'll click on it out of rage.
But - regardless of any one specific reply - it quickly became clear that many, MANY people were saying this unironically and actually for real meant it. God, how depressing.
Found the alternate version I made.
i <3 holding my tongue when people talk about the Olympics to me. oh wow they’re doing sports! at the no trannies invitational! awesome! yes my left eye has always twitched like that
It honestly bothers me immensely that pretty much everybody just gives the Olympics a transmisogyny pass. Even people who otherwise are entirely supportive of transfems, even people who correctly avoid other things that are transmisogynistic like Harry Potter, even lots of transfems!
For those who may be upset by my pointing out that the olympics specifically targets transfems with it's discriminatory policies: transmasc people have been allowed to participate in the men's category without restrictions since 2015. While transfems had only been allowed to participate in the women's categor if they met extremely restrictive requirements, and then this year were totally barred from competing.
This is represented by the overwhelming number of transmasc atheletes that have and are competing in the olympics compared with the near non-existent number of transfems that have competed in the past.

i am going to get a bad grade in sleeping, something which is normal not to want but terribly easy to achieve.
happy friday the 13th/valentine's day double feature to all goths, emos, vampires, horror enthusiasts, reanimated corpses, romantics, weirdos, freaks, lovers, and everyone else who may celebrate
This game, about listing as many animals as you can, is shockingly well-considered and polished for such an apparent shitpost of a game idea
hot new brain workout
I got scared and started listing colors and objects
😭
Insane ball knowledge
Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.
"I can note your interest in that feature for future development."
i shouldve been there during the cambrian explosion... #fomo
My extremely controversial gaming opinion is that they should allow you to obtain meat in stardew valley and while I understand that the vast majority of people might not want to play with it I also think somewhat that the absence of any such mechanics in a farming simulator is a sign of broader disconnection and alienation from where food comes from etc
>’Farming’ game
>Unable to raise animals for meat because that’s not ‘cosy’ enough
>Where do you think meat comes from in real life
Honestly im rly curious and i think the other poll's range is a bit ridiculous:
What temperature would you rather spend all day doing errands in
100° F (37.7° C)
0° F (-17.7° C)
shoutout to slow growers, late bloomers, people whose plans got derailed by circumstances beyond their control or their own choices, people who never had a plan to begin with, people who have had to start over when theyre too old to feel like theyre supposed to be where they are, people who cant pretend theyre built for the environment theyre in, and everyone who's not living the life they thought they would. im proud of you for making it this far and i hope you keep going until youre happy ♡
Funny growing up in the late 2000s and seeing constant "don't text and drive" warnings, PSAs telling us to put our phones down behind the wheel, wait until you're home to send that text, a phone-distracted driver is a deadly driver etc etc
Only for modern car manufacturers to be like "we made the car a phone :) now you have to text and drive to change the radio station :)"
