why are singer biographies generally like this:
[soprano] has wanted to be an opera singer since kindergarten. at age 3, she has already seen the complete works of verdi. at 11, she created her own piano version of the ring. after finishing school, she went to conservatory and immediately won every prize. she bludgeoned to competition to d**th to become an ensemble member at [world-famous opera house] at 22, and now enjoys a sensational career world-wide.
[baritone/bass] initially studied physics and then sociology and then zoology. he never sung a single note until he was 23 and then sang in a local choir very badly for 10 years. he began his vocal education after completing his certification as a car mechanic. he is now an mainstay at the worlds most prestigious opera venues.
[…and they’re both incredibly good artists.]
If it sounds like the composer is trying to blast you with the orchestra until you're as deaf as he is, it's Beethoven.
If it sounds like the composer might be a vampire, it's Bach.
If it sounds like the composer is trying to set the violins on fire, it's Vivaldi.
this only works if the only Beethoven you know is symphony no 5 and the only Bach you know is toccata and fugue in d min and the only Vivaldi you know is summer from the 4 seasons lol

Occasionally forget people genuinely think capitalism is thousands of years old
One time I was talking about Robin Hood with some coworkers and one guy was like “he was bad because the people he helped learned to expect handouts” and I wanted to be like… okay can you explain how that flawed capitalist propaganda applies to feudalism
reminder that capitalism was literally invented in the 16th century
That’s an exaggeration. What was invented in the 16th century was mercantilism. Capitalism really dates for the beginning of the nineteenth century, with the rise of industry and cash crops over artisans and merchants. Vulture capitalism, with the notion that companies have no duties other than generating profit, is even younger.
Capitalism is only 200 years old and I have to say, they have not been an impressive 200 years
I think a lot of this comes from the fact that most people don’t know the formal definition of capitalism. We all know the word, we’ve all seen the jokes, but very few people bother to actually define it unless they’re talking about political theory and philosophy, so it’s easy to end up with the impression that Capitalism = Money Can Be Exchanged For Goods And Services.
Capitalism is the economic system where most of the means of production (i.e. everything people need to have to make the stuff that everyone wants) are owned by private individuals or corporations, who then hire people to provide the labor necessary to produce things, with the intent of selling the output at a profit. It’s the difference between “you’re a carpenter and you make a chair and you sell it” and “you’re Richard Q. Richington who owns a chair factory, and you pay people to sell the chairs you paid other people to make and then all the excess money goes back to you.” There have been Richard Q. Richingtons on and off throughout history, but that being the norm for every single industry is a pretty recent development.

But I don't want to write my dissertation 😭😭😭
Read an interesting excerpt from a book on music education and eugenics this week and it got me thinking about how in early education (elementary school or so) music and art topics are the only areas where kids are discouraged or banned from participating in the basis of lack of ‘natural talent.’ Other areas are still set up to be humiliating and punishing if you’re perceived as ‘untalented’ in those areas, but you’re still *required* to learn them up to a certain point. Unfortunately I can understand the reasoning behind this, however flawed it may be, but it’s heartbreaking to think of how many students miss out on learning to express themselves and create things because one teacher at some point decided they were bad at it.
And it’s not only about ‘talent,’ I remember in my schools as a kid, anyone who was in ESL classes was excluded from a lot of art and music classes because they had to go to English classes. Very similar for a lot of students with disabilities and other support needs. It’s so unfair to so many kids to miss out on those opportunities
