So i've told you about the difference between translation and interpreting, now its turn to tell you about each type. First will be translation. I guess everybody knows what is it. But correct to say "Translation is the transmittal of written text from one language into another".
Some of you may think that translation suggests "just translate the text". In fact it is not so. Translation means interpreting the meaning of the text and transferring it into a new text, equivalent to the original but in another language.
Translation also has to take into account cultural norms, slang, history if it must be and etc. Translator has to know for what audience to translate. Will it be for children or for businessmen, for teenagers or for old women and etc. In translation such information called "background knowledge". It suggests that translator has not only know languages, but the features of languages, the cultural aspects, the age of audience and etc. That is background knowledge. Without it translation won't be complete and correct.
Now about its types. Translation can be classified by different categories in different areas. There are a lot of classifications that were made by different people. Let me tell you about the most popular.
Literary translation. It is clear from the name that this type deals with literary texts, i.e. poetry, fictions etc. The main function here is to make “an emotional or aesthetic impression upon the reader”. It is very important to accurately describe all the range of emotions. Because of it translator should understand the literature and “feel” the work that will translate.
Technical translation. This type involving translation of documents, texts that relate to technological subject areas, i.e. user’s guide, description of some technology, using the specialized terminology of the scientific or technical field involved. “The technical translator is expected to observe the stylistic requirements of scientific and technical materials to make text acceptable to the specialist”. Just for the record, technical translators are playing important role now because of the revolutionary technical progress.
Mass media translation. In this constantly changing world, it has become important to keep up with latest trend and that’s why translation is important in media to formulate effective strategy. Media is such as vast field that includes all types of information. It could be promotional, advertisement, informational, online and offline content, social media post, mass media campaign and many more. By translating all these one can enhances their capability to reach more customers and this eventually results into more customer sales.
Business translation. Global business is a reality and it is expanding. The economic benefits of a global economy do not come without their challenges, however, and businesses must deal with the translation of business and legal documents into numerous target languages. These translations entail a number of critical elements that may not be found in many other translation categories.Items that may fall in the realm of business or legal translation include patent documents, depositions, contracts, application letters, birth certificates, strategy guides, marketing and advertising, and even financial statements. Translators who work on business documents must not only have native-level fluency in the languages in which they work, but understand the legal and field-specific terminology used in the documents and comprehend the cultural and legal systems involved.
Legal translatioin. Legal translation is a translation in the legal sphere, for example, work in legal proceedings or with legal documentation. A legal translator must have knowledge not only language that he/she works with, but also in jurisprudence. Deep knowledge of civil state law is the key to a good legal translation. Medical translation. Medical translation is translating various types of documents, such as training materials for healthcare, medical device or pharmaceutical fields, marketing or clinical, regulatory, and technical documentation. For example, in labels and literature pertaining to pharmaceuticals and medical devices sold locally to be translated into the language they commonly use. The translation of medical text is very important for clinical trials in order for patients, local clinicians and representatives of regulatory organizations to understand them. Likewise it is usual for regulatory approval submissions to be translated.
