Ohhh my god I know about power of attorney stop telling me about power of attorney and I'm also not american stop telling me how to do that in the USA. The hospital thing was an EXAMPLE to ILLUSTRATE MY POINT because it was an example used in the ORIGINAL POST I WAS RESPONDING TO a year ago. it is not the one and only problem with amatonormativity nor is it the main point of the post, and it's not actually something I'm facing right now and I also don't think she should need *power of attorney* just to *visit me* if I'm dying.
it's great that there are *some* workarounds to *some* aspects of the legal and social privileges of marriage but I don't think I should need to go through all those processes and it also doesn't change that marriage (and relationships expected to possibly become marriage) is privileged and privileges a specific type of relationship and amatonormativity as a word and concept were coined to talk about that and they are inherently linked.
On the other hand: everyone in the notes mentioning the disability and ableism aspect of this: YES, that is part of the system, you are exactly right, and it was one of the things I was thinking about when I made this post. Marriage as an institution is designed to privilege some people and relationships and disprivilege others, and it is and always has been deeply tied to quite a number of power structures; the fact that (in Canada which is where I live) marriage has socially become about love more than money and ownership, women and people assigned female have more autonomy in it, and two people of the same gender can get married does not make it not, as a legal (and social) institution, a tool of the kyriarchy. This is absolutely wielded as a weapon against disabled people.
