skrael shoots them…what he hopes is not a look of obvious concern. of course he knows what some trolls would think, of the taste of—something he used to be. a very, very long time ago. 

but 7up doesn’t seem like they’re trying to eat him. (bellroc would have warned him, surely? …surely.) in fact, they seem like they’re trying very carefully not to do so. a consideration he would see repaid.

none of which means he has the first clue how to do so. 

“…thank you?” he winces, at how uncertain he sounds. “that is—don’t worry about it. you’re made of stone, and i’m…colder than most.” is this a joke? he’s not entirely sure. he’s reasonably sure he knows at least two parties who would laugh, but he also knows those parties are hardly unbiased. "i’d try to fix this myself, but…heat exchange is bellroc’s art, not mine.“ a quiet, half-nervous laugh. "i’d only freeze us worse.”

“Can’t help what we are.” It’s hard to understand them, but their gruff, reassuring tone is clear enough. They tug gently again, slowly making progress. They had heard a few stories about the dread Arcane Wizards, ancient elementals, but this one was just as nice as the other two. 

Even if they seemed uncomfortable, it was more than excusable by now, considering their new accessory. 

“Me, big rock. You, ice cold, alright alright.” They hum a bit of the song, unaware of their rancid breath. There’s too much to think about instead -- not moving around too much, being polite, and, most recently, resisting the urge to shake it like a polaroid picture.

don’t make a face, he thinks, trying desperately not to panic at the bigness and the closeness and the—7up-ness, of the situation. you know trolls. don’t make a face. this is one of bellroc’s friends, they mean you no harm; if you’re rude, it will reflect far worse on them than it ever will on you—

when their eyes meet, skrael…forces a small smile. not even ungenuine! only—he’s self-conscious, suddenly (absurdly) and doesn’t want to think too hard on what it must look like on him. even before a troll.

“this happens more often than you might think,” he admits, in what he hopes is something…resembling reassurance. that it’s mostly from baby mephits, all of them so small their eyes haven’t fully opened, he thinks, is neither here nor there. “just—give it a moment. it’s nice enough out, it shouldn’t take long.”

7Up isn’t half as embarrassed as Skrael is over the situation -- but that doesn’t mean they have no shame. They are, of course, ignorant to their general smell, much less what their breath smells like, but 7up knows how little fun it is to have a hanger-on. Doubly so when they’re three times your size.

“Sorry,” they say around their big pink tongue, and try to tug a little without making Skrael fall over. “You taste good?” It’s the best they could offer for now, as there was a bit more melting to do before 7up could pull themselves free.

7up lifts up from their trash pile with a grin. In one hand, they have a basket of honey and questionably edible apples, and a hollowed out ram’s horn in the other. “Happy New Year!”

The one designated as Fragwa– as his obviously quite becoming mustache indicates– raises his hackles with a wag of a truly unthreatening finger, only to be shocked still when the pat on his head does not, in fact, turn out to be a misleading attack.

Instead, it’s a kind gesture of affection, and he recognizes it as such.

So, turning to his fellows– Chomp, Stomp, Gus, and, of course, William, namely– he waves them forward, and between the five of them, they attempt to encircle the kind troll in a returning hug.

7up isn’t intimidated by much, but five goblins turning towards them at once is enough to give them just a hint of pause, before they flop down bodily to allow the goblins to more easily give them a hug. They grin widely, laughing and wagging their stumpy tail. “Hi, goblins.”

It’s a strange sensation, having so many lanky limbs wrapped around their body, but far from an unpleasant one. “Is it a good day? Do you have goodies? I can bring you goodies.”

The young wizard gives a tiny, delighted gasp, eyes brightening. "Oh, why thank you, friend troll!" He beams. "Here, I think I have something to give you in return!"

Reaching into the pouch at his hip, he goes for a flower that he'd stored away earlier that afternoon. Getting on his very tip toes, he reaches up as high as he can, to tuck the little violet into the troll's mane. "There! A pretty hair accessory for you!"

Niamh opened her bag and pulled out a thermos, along with a small loaf of bread wrapped in wax paper. “I brought some vegetable soup that I made and some honey bread!”

They sniffed at the thermos, brow furrowing. It was such a small amount of soup -- surely she would still be hungry, even after eating it all. (Then again, when one is nearly seven feet tall, most reasonably-sized containers looked tiny.) “Mmm, smells like plastic,” they joked, grinning. “You always make good food. Must be gore-mate chef during the day.”

Skrael chuckles, and reaches over to gently brush his fingers through the large troll’s mane. His hand is tiny in comparison, but he hopes the gesture is still enough to be noticed. “You are indeed. And we are quite lucky for it, too.” 

7up chuffs warmly, leaning in to Skrael’s touch, however cold his hand may be. “Good friends. Oh!” They pulled back with realization. “Should I also have hat?” They didn’t exactly wear clothes, after all, but they wanted to impress Uncle Kraker.

"Yeah." They nod and flop down onto their back, hands on their belly as they look up into the sky. It was a beautifully clear night, filled with uncountable stars. Great swaths of the milky way flowed like a river, and even the night-birds seemed to quiet down in awe of the beauty. "Things hard sometimes." They nodded, and patted the ground next to them for Douxie to lay down as well, before imparting their great wisdom.

Despite the bad language -- which 7up would never use themselves, as they prided themselves on their manners -- there was no misunderstanding Jim's meaning. Their heart fluttered in their chest, and their toothy grin grew from ear to ear.

"Love you, too!" they said, catching Jim up into a bone-crushing hug and swinging Jim around. "We are friends! Good, good friends!"

7up gasped, ears flicking back and forth. "A family reunion?" They just barely contained themselves from bouncing around with excitement, and settled with pawing excitedly at the ground in front of them. They didn't know Skrael had family beyond Nari and Bellroc, and they wanted so badly to go with him.

But it wasn't polite to invite yourself along, least of all without having something to bring to the party. "Wait here." They disappeared into a burrow of trash, rooting and clattering around before emerging with a questionably clean, if soggy, beanie clasped in their mouth. 7up took it in one hand and settled the beanie onto Skrael's headpiece. "Very fashionable. For your family."

Now, it wasn't their fault that Bellroc's staff looked so delicious. It was bright red and glowed -- and everyone knows things that glow taste best. They opened their mouth wide and slurped it up like a noodle in one go -- only for something in it to disagree with their belly.

7up belched, and back up came the staff, covered in spit and goop but otherwise unharmed. They had their mouth open, fully ready to eat it again -- and only stopped at Bellroc's swearing.

7up didn't know they could swear. And -- oh. Uh. Hm. Were they mad?
