@trashydm
And then you had that dream again.
On a scale of “designed an entire newspaper reporter NPC as our nemesis” to “never mentioned I wanted a horse”, how much did you talk to your DM about your character before starting the campaign?
Dead center of the scale is, of course, designing a character that can only eat nobility in a campaign set in a rural Oregon town of 18,000 people
Do I need this? No. Do I have friends who will play this with me? Also no.
Do I want a narrative about building a community, in spite of The Horrors Beyond Our Control? Absofuckingloutley.
I bought Slugblaster just so I could read through it and use it for fanfic prompts, and I might do the same with this. Maybe.
You are a magical null where any magic around you stops working. But instead of using this power to fight or capture, you run a special home for magical people who are too young and/or too traumatized to properly control their powers. And today you've just received a new arrival.
WEIRDLY SPECIFIC BUT HELPFUL CHARACTER BUILDING QUESTIONS
What’s the lie your character says most often?
How loosely or strictly do they use the word ‘friend’?
How often do they show their genuine emotions to others versus just the audience knowing?
What’s a hobby they used to have that they miss?
Can they cry on command? If so, what do they think about to make it happen?
What’s their favorite [insert anything] that they’ve never recommended to anyone before?
What would you (mun) yell in the middle of a crowd to find them? What would their best friend and/or romantic partner yell?
How loose is their use of the phrase ‘I love you’?
Do they give tough love or gentle love most often? Which do they prefer to receive?
What fact do they excitedly tell everyone about at every opportunity?
If someone was impersonating them, what would friends / family ask or do to tell the difference?
What’s something that makes them laugh every single time? Be specific!
When do they fake a smile? How often?
How do they put out a candle?
What’s the most obvious difference between their behavior at home, at work, at school, with friends, and when they’re alone?
What kinds of people do they have arguments with in their head?
What do they notice first in the mirror versus what most people first notice looking at them?
Who do they love truly, 100% unconditionally (if anyone)?
What would they do if stuck in a room with the person they’ve been avoiding?
Who do they like as a person but hate their work? Vice versa, whose work do they like but don’t like the person?
What common etiquette do they disagree with? Do they still follow it?
What simple activity that most people do / can do scares your character?
What do they feel guilty for that the other person(s) doesn’t / don’t even remember?
Did they take a cookie from the cookie jar? What kind of cookie was it?
What subject / topic do they know a lot about that’s completely useless to the direct plot?
How would they respond to being fired by a good boss?
What’s the worst gift they ever received? How did they respond?
What do they tell people they want? What do they actually want?
How do they respond when someone doesn’t believe them?
When they make a mistake and feel bad, does the guilt differ when it’s personal versus when it’s professional?
When do they feel the most guilt? How do they respond to it?
If they committed one petty crime / misdemeanor, what would it be? Why?
How do they greet someone they dislike / hate?
How do they greet someone they like / love?
What is the smallest, morally questionable choice they’ve made?
Who do they keep in their life for professional gain? Is it for malicious intent?
What’s a secret they haven’t told serious romantic partners and don’t plan to tell?
What hobby are they good at in private, but bad at in front of others? Why?
Would they rather be invited to an event to feel included or be excluded from an event if they were not genuinely wanted there?
How do they respond to a loose handshake? What goes through their head?
What phrases, pronunciations, or mannerisms did they pick up from someone / somewhere else?
If invited to a TED Talk, what topic would they present on? What would the title of their presentation be?
What do they commonly misinterpret because of their own upbringing / environment / biases? How do they respond when realizing the misunderstanding?
What language would be easiest for them to learn? Why?
What’s something unimportant / frivolous that they hate passionately?
Are they a listener or a talker? If they’re a listener, what makes them talk? If they’re a talker, what makes them listen?
Who have they forgotten about that remembers them very well?
Who would they say ‘yes’ to if invited to do something they abhorred / strongly didn’t want to do?
Would they eat something they find gross to be polite?
What belief / moral / personality trait do they stand by that you (mun) personally don’t agree with?
What’s a phrase they say a lot?
Do they act on their immediate emotions, or do they wait for the facts before acting?
Who would / do they believe without question?
What’s their instinct in a fight / flight / freeze / fawn situation?
What’s something they’re expected to enjoy based on their hobbies / profession that they actually dislike / hate?
If they’re scared, who do they want comfort from? Does this answer change depending on the type of fear?
What’s a simple daily activity / motion that they mess up often?
How many hobbies have they attempted to have over their lifetime? Is there a common theme?
Thinking about the intimacy of the Embrace in VtM. Being around your sire must be the most surreal thing for a kindred. They know things about you that no one else ever will. They held you in their arms while you died. They know what the last drops of your blood tasted like, what it was like to feel your body turn pale and cold. They know whether you cried or struggled or moaned in bliss while they killed you, and what the look in your eyes was like when their vitae first hit your lips.
What’s it like to have to look at someone who knows those things about you? To have to talk with them? Try to tell them no when they want you to do something? No wonder the average vampire in VtM has massive sire issues.
The very beginning of an idea..

vtm community what is your least favorite clan. and why is it brujah
#Brujah bc nearly every single Brujah character has the exact same opinions aesthetic and personality#even the Ventrue have more depth to them than that#Ventrue are executives now but they used to be kings#who were the Brujah before they were punks but after they were philosophers???#WHO KNOWS#like I get it. clan stereotypes exist for a reason.#they Embrace people who are most like them#but every time I see a new Brujah in a battle jacket whose personality is fuck the Camarilla I'm like oh cool#I've seen this exact character a thousand times before why did you bother#it bugs me that they're supposed to be philosophers but never treated that way#it bugs me that they're supposed to be contrarians but always rebel against things everyone agrees are bad#it bugs me they're individualists but always look and act the same#it bugs me that they're treated as the social justice clan when rebellion isn't inherently good or just#if you want a justice coan the Banu Haqim are RIGHT THERE#ugh I really should make my own Brujah characters I feel like there's a thousand missed opportunities with them#give me a hacker who puts leaks on that military game website#give me a nerd who created a VPN#give me a woman whose opinions are establishment but she's a rebel because she blazed a trail in a male dominated field#give me someone who rebelled against vampirekind by continuing their normal life but at night now#but please dear god not yet another punk#VTM
HEY HEY HEY, @robotslenderman, want to meet my anti-colonial Brujah nerd? He's an organizer, not a front liner, but he's strongly pro-union and will talk your ear off about when Henry Ford was sending bully boys with clubs as strike breakers and the importance of organized resistance.
His stats definitely give away that this is not a boy meant to fight. XD
His entire line is like this, actually!
I want to grind this man into a fine powder and snort him
the horror of losing yourself am i right fellas
Quite right
Had to screenshot this comment on the vtmb2 pre-order trailer on youtube bc it sums up my problems with everything that's come out about this game so neatly
@ineed-to-sleep you’re right and you should say it.
#remember if you were too defiant and reveling in your power fantasy in bloodlines lacroix would just mind control your ass#remember if you were enjoying your power fantasy you'd get hunted down for breaking the masquerade#remember when the game literally calls you a pawn and nothing more#its because pawns are very important to the end game state of the board. but until end game theyre fodder and only exist#to make the other pieces' days more inconvenient#you are an important end game pawn. but make no mistake. you're important because the king is escorting you#thats it tags via @daphrona
this is such a mood tho, and one of the things that gets me is that they're trying to position 'Phyre' as a powerful ancient but like, even powerful ancients who've been in torpor for decades don't have the kind of connections and resources in the Immediate night-to-night struggle that would Automatically make them "powerful" in any Useful sense.
it's pretty clear the player is supposed to be showing up in seattle with no connections or support, which means that even the 'power fantasy' is effectively curtailed because sure we might be able to get six or seven dots in a discipline or whatever vtm is very much constructed so that raw power is Not everything by a long shot.
i'm not giving the devs any credit whatsoever for actually studying vtm lore, especially not with the interviews they've given, but if beckett who is arguably one of the most well-connected characters (and as a theoretical 7th-6th gen, probably punching in About the same weight-class as phyre because the idea of them being like 'yeah the player is fifth generation is fucking comically ludicrous) who has also been continually Awake since his embrace has to spend four years doing favors and running errands for his contacts to get what amounts to rare ritual components to accomplish the One task of opening Kaymakli. and that's for ritual components. that's not for any sort of actual social or political power in a domain.
this is entirely setting aside the absolutely bonkers game design choices that got made. like from a purely lore and story standpoint, 'you play as an ancient vampire. this is a power fantasy' is a ridiculous statement. diablerie simulator ass statement.

Nothing as striking to me as a vampire who overcompensates with airs of civility and etiquette and self discipline. And then the Beast still comes out. Sorry but (to me!) it doesn't hit the same when the guy is Always Feral. It lacks the pizzazz. Put that damn easily broken facade on boy!! It's about the slowly growing futility of the refined, "human" veneer!!!
