Summary: A week after Jack left, he brought Castiel back from the Empty — whole, alive, and standing in front of Dean like nothing had changed, though everything had. Dean’s grateful. Of course he is. But now that Cas is here, really here, Dean is left face-to-face with everything unsaid between them. He knows what Cas confessed before dying, and worse — he knows damn well what he feels in return. But saying it out loud? That’s another story entirely, because there's something broken inside of him.

Dean asks Cas for something no one’s ever asked of him before: to go back in time, to the moment something broke, and stop it from happening. Stop the moment that taught Dean to be afraid of what he wanted most. Stop the moment Dean got broken. 

Stop John Winchester.

Cas was here.

Alive, breathing, and dwelling somewhere in the bunker again like nothing had ever happened, while Dean tried to remember how to be a functioning human being. 

Don’t get him wrong. Dean was happy. Dean was fucking thrilled.

Last time he’d been this happy was when his mom somehow managed to patch up his favorite teddy bear after the neighbor’s dog got a hold of it and tore it to shreds. Dean had cried like it was the end of the world — because at four years old, it kinda was. Mary had spent the whole night sewing its ear back on.

(Ironically enough, it didn’t last because a few months later that teddy bear turned to ash — ending up the same as Mary.)

So yeah, Dean was happy now. Stupid, shaky, can’t-stop-smiling happy. Because now he knew Chuck was gone and they’d get their happy ending.

Which somehow only made it worse.

Dean's got this insane plan to rescue Castiel from the clutches of the Empty. Jack turns Dean into an angel, Dean kicks the bucket, dives into the Empty, finds Castiel, nabs his grace, turns him human, Jack brings Dean back to life, and then reverses the whole shebang. Sounds simple, right? Well, they underestimated the Empty, that asshole.

Dean strikes a questionable deal with said asshole, and now Castiel has to give Dean a crash course in angel stuff while Dean tries to teach Castiel how to be human. They both despise it, but hey, at least they're both breathing and since Castiel is back, Dean is (trying to be) ready for the next step: Love.

Why I recommend it?/my overview (review): this is such a classic fanfic to me I’m surprised I haven’t added this yet. This fanfic was the reason why I got an a03 account so I can save it in bookmarks so I don’t have to keep finding it every time I wanted to reread it. Which was a lot. Dean cares so much about Cas it breaks me. Also this fic is so in character?!

Silence settled thick and uncomfortable, stretching until it felt like something might snap. Finally, the director leaned forward, his chair creaking in protest. “Alright. Lemme ask it this way. Either of you… gifted?”

Sam flinched.

Dean felt it instantly, like a current snapping through the air. He looked down at his brother, gentling his grip just a fraction. “Sammy?”

Sam hesitated, eyes fixed on a clown’s frozen grin. Then, softly: “Yeah.”

The director’s gaze sharpened. “What kind?”

Sam swallowed. “Psychic.”

The word dropped heavy into the room.

The director nodded once, like that explained everything. His eyes slid to Dean. “And you?”

Dean snorted before he could stop himself. “I’ve got an otherworldly smile.” He flashed it to demonstrate, exactly the crooked, challenging one which would always result in a hit from a certain man.

The director rolled his eyes so hard Dean thought they might stick. “So that’s a no. I don’t take in folks who are just human.”

“Sir, plea-”

“But,” the man cut in, “I do need someone to shovel coal. Fireman. Locomotive don’t run on goodwill and good intentions.” His gaze flicked over Dean’s frame. “You’re underfed and scrawny. Try growin’ some muscle if you wanna keep up, boy.”

Dean blinked. “You mean-”

“I mean,” the director said, “you work, you stay.”

Sam finally looked up. Dean exhaled like his lungs had forgotten how.

“As you know, this ain’t a normal circus,” the director continued. “So a fair warnin’. We got blood magic. A couple more psychics. Vampires -- don’t worry, the house-trained kind. Werewolves, too. Keep it civil, keep it peaceful, and don’t bother Castiel.”

Dean frowned. “C-Castiel?”

The door creaked open just as the director said: “Our healer.”

Dean didn’t hear the footsteps -- only felt the shift, like the room itself had inhaled.

A man stepped inside.

White shirt, worn thin and stained with work. Lines too sharp, posture too precise. Eyes an impossible electric blue against the washed-out monochrome of the world. He carried a cup of coffee, steam curling upward like pale ghosts, and crossed the room with quiet purpose before setting it on the desk.

“Your coffee,” Castiel said, dry and precise, setting the cup down before lifting his gaze. His eyes found Dean’s, blue cutting clean through the dim office like a fault line, and Dean’s breath hitched before he could stop it. The moment landed wrong ike static snapping under his skin, like standing too close to a flame and realizing it wasn’t just comfortable warmth, but he could actually burn.

Dean’s stomach flipped, his spine prickled, and every instinct he had screamed danger while something deeper whispered stay.

For one suspended, horrible second, Dean felt seen in a way that made his ribs ache -- like Castiel could reach inside him and brush against the soft, breakable parts Dean kept nailed shut.

It was deeply, profoundly uncomfortable.

Dean hated it.

And yet—

His hand dropped to his thigh, restless, then slipped into his pocket without conscious thought. His fingers closed around metal. Solid. Familiar. He pulled the switchblade free and flicked it open.

Castiel’s blood still stained the blade.

It clung there stubbornly, dark and cracked, the way the Empty’s tendrils had clung to Castiel’s trench coat, his arms, his throat. The same blood Cas had used to draw the ward, to build a wall, to protect Dean one last time.

Dean swallowed hard.

He opened his left hand, palm up, fingers spread. The blade kissed his skin like a poisonous lover — sharp, intimate — and the sting bloomed instantly. Red welled up, bright and alive, sliding over the steel to mix with Castiel’s dried blood as if it recognized it. As if it belonged there.

Dean watched it happen, breath shallow, hands trembling. His head was still a wreck, adrenaline chewing through his thoughts, grief and disbelief tangling tight in his chest.

And then it happened.

The skin pulled together beneath his eyes, warmth threading through it like invisible fingers smoothing him whole again. Pale blue light flickered — soft, unmistakable — before fading away, leaving nothing behind but unbroken skin and Dean’s heart pounding like it was trying to escape.

He laughed before he could stop himself. It came out rough and breathless, half disbelief, half hysteria.

“Ha,” Dean whispered, staring at his hand like it might betray him if he looked away. A crooked smile pulled at his mouth, fragile and real. “It worked.” The hunter looked up, his wet eyes staring back at him in his rearview mirror. His healed hand petted his chest gently.

“H-hiya, buddy.”

Dean doesn't die on the rebar. So, together, they rebuild.

“You are so fucking obtuse,” Cas says, like he’s delivering a verdict: ‘I sentence you, Dean Winchester, to being a dumb motherfucker for thirty-seven years’. “Like, actually genuinely dense. Were you dropped on your head as a baby or are you just this committed to missing the point?”

Dean’s jaw clicks shut. The silence that stretches tight between them is a wire pulled to its breaking point, underscored by Social Distortion vibrating through the walls from the club outside.

“Right,” he says, the word hollow even to his own ears. He’s got fuck-all else to come back at Cas with, and he knows it — he’s bringing a rusty spoon to a gunfight. “I’d forgotten what a bitch you are. That’s on me, I apologize.”

“Fuck you, Dean,” Cas responds, his voice dangerously level. “Or, well, I guess not, because you’re a coward. You’d rather pretend that this is about a girl I wasn't even interested in than acknowledge that the only person I wanted to leave with was you. You’d rather burn this whole thing to the ground than admit that we’re already something.”

“We’re not—”

“Don’t,” Cas cuts him off, eyes steely. If looks could kill, Dean would already be deep-sixed. “Don’t you dare insult my intelligence by saying we’re ‘just friends’—” He hooks his fingers in the air, a sharp, mocking version of the ridiculous air quotes he always does. “—or ‘just fucking.’ Friends don’t look at each other the way you look at me. And people who are ‘just fucking’ don’t act this terrified of losing it.”

summary:

Dean is so determined to be normal about Cas and what Cas said, so determined for things to get back to normal, that he starts counting his victories. First, he can touch Cas just like he did before--easy. He can comfort him after a nightmare--no problem. He doesn't even think about the fact that Cas is in love with him when Dean's moving around the bunker post-shower, as dressed down as he ever got before, just boxers and his robe closed over them. He's not even worried. Not even thinking twice about what Cas might see. Very natural, very cool; he can be cool about this. It's just that, along with that, he can't stop thinking about the fact that Cas is in love with him. And when they start watching that fucking schmoopy ass show with Jack, Dean can't stop thinking about that kid, Nick, and where his story's going to go. Why does it matter so much to him anyway? --- aka Dean watches Heartstopper, and it fixes him.

chapter preview:

Cas rolls them over, and he sits back, practically in Dean's lap, which has his cock twitching and him wondering if Cas can feel it, which has him twitching again, and--well. It's sort of a feedback loop. He slides his hands up Cas's thighs--where and when did Cas get beefy thighs? Cas's fingers trail over his chest, light and ticklish, until Dean squirms and bats at him.

"Quit it," he says, grinning.

Cas makes a soft sound, not quite a laugh. "You're ticklish." He's staring down at Dean like he's some kind of--something worth staring at. Dean fights off the urge to find the quickest way to shut that look down.

"Maybe. So what? Don't get any ideas 'cause I will make you regret it."

Cas shakes his head, and he runs his hands more firmly up Dean's chest that time, tracing the lines, over his collarbone. He sets his hand against his shoulder--the shoulder--and Dean quiets, stills.

"I remember remaking you," Cas says, confessional, hushed. "Taking care to put you back together, because you were important to Heaven. I--" He thumbs over Dean's shoulder, his voice hitching briefly. "I spent so long that I thought surely, when you woke up, you would still feel that connection--whatever was left of my grace, inside of you." Now he drags the back of his fingers down the inside of Dean's arm, and Dean shivers. "I've thought about what it would be like to touch you like this, even before I really understood what I was feeling. Like," he says, with that little sound again, a light touch to Dean's chest, "I didn't know you were ticklish. I couldn't have... appreciated that then."

Dean blinks hard, his heart slow to beat in his chest--or maybe it's beating too hard--whatever, it's doing its own thing, leaving Dean with his mind swirling with everything Cas just said.

"Jesus, Cas, you can't just say shit like that," he breathes.

Already, though, he's reaching for him, tugging him down by his hand, until Cas is close enough and he can kiss his response directly into his mouth because he sure as shit can't handle finding the words to deal with… all that.

When they break apart, Dean pitches his voice lower, his nose brushing Cas's as he talks.

"'I remember when I remade you.' What the fuck--" The last bit and the grin that goes with it get swallowed up by Cas rolling his eyes right into a kiss; a pretty smooth move, all things considered.

Omg, I got tagged. Thank you @wanderingcas for the tag 😭😊❤️ This seems like a lot of fun!

How many fics did you write this year? I finished Fix Me! Beta Testing is still an unfinished WIP which I hope to finish this year and in the meanwhile I've got numerous WIPs which I am slowly cooking for y'all.

How many words did you write this year? I think about 75k? Fix Me is 55k, 10k on the last Beta Testing chapter and I might have spend 10k plotting.

Did you try anything new this year? (new fandom? new pairing? new language?) I made a new skin on ao3 for Fix Me (with help since my CSS is basic), and I loved doing it.

Did you participate in any fests/events during the year? No, unfortunately. I am awful with deadlines and pressure, so I might in the future but for now -- nope.

Which is the funniest fic you have written this year? I haven't written it yet. It's in the deepest chambers of my mind vault, and I hope to have it popped out quickly.

Which is the angriest fic you have written this year? It might have been Fix Me, since Castiel wasn't much of a fan of John.

Which is the steamiest fic you have written this year? Beta Testing. Without a doubt.

What is your most valuable writing lesson learned this year? Write for fun and for yourself. Write because you love it, and not because you feel you have to and you're not obligated to anything. Write because it gives you a good feeling.

What do you look forward to writing next year? I wish I could just stop time and write everything I want and finish every single WIP this year.

Fic Summary:

1993: Twelve-year-old Castiel Novak would follow his best friend Dean Winchester anywhere — including to a cabin in the woods where they find a mysterious board game inspired by their favorite book, Carnival of Terror. When Dean disappears while playing the game, Castiel is forced to confront a new world: one where his memories of what happened to Dean are dismissed as the fictions of a traumatized mind.

2008: Living in a new town, under a new name, Castiel is doing his best to move on with his life. But when Dean’s younger brother Sam appears on his doorstep in search of answers, Castiel needs to make a choice: does he truly want to let the past go?
