How Long is this Fic Really?: A Guide

Word count in the HP Series:

I’ve read/ am reading fic that are upwards to 150,000 - 200,000. You’re telling me that authors that write for fun are writing a full-length book for the fun of it? They have earned my respect 10 fold.

Those, my friends, are outliers.

Young Adult books are roughly 55,000 to 80,000 words. (Younger YA skews shorter.)

Mystery (especially cozy mystery) books tend to be between 65,000 to 80,000 words.

Romance tends to be between 85,000 to 100,000.

Fantasy and sometimes Thrillers tends to go longer; HOWEVER, anything above 120,000 is considered (and this is an official industry term guys) REALLY FUCKING LONG. As in, if someone submitted a 170,000-word book for publication, there is a very good chance they would have to cut 50,000 words or more before it would be published. I’ve worked for publishers where anything over 120,000 was an automatic rejection.

(Note: this is depending on a lot of different factors. Notice how Rowling’s books got suddenly longer–that’s because her name got big enough that she could sell those huge monsters. Most young authors don’t have the benefit of the doubt there.) (And of course there are always exceptions. This is strictly average industry accepted norms. Like seriously, if you’re trying to get published, learn the average length of books in your genre, because it is a barrier to publication if you’re significantly too short or too long.)

So if you are reading a 200,000 word fanfiction, you are not reading a full-length book someone wrote for the fun of it. You are reading TWO FULL-LENGTH BOOKS someone wrote for the fun of it.

PS: While I’m dropping numbers, here’s another. The average chapter length tends to be 3,000 to 4,500 words. So if your fic is 4,000 words, hey–you wrote a whole chapter!

Not to be the friend that's too woke, but if you're drawing Star Trek TOS characters in a style that's even remotely realistic, it is anti-Semitic to give Spock a small upturned nose.

I will elaborate.

These drawings are very cartoonish and stylized:

It seems like the artists' goals were to capture just enough of the characteristics of the characters to make them recognizable. (I'd even say that Kirk in the Amok Time comic is only recognizable as Kirk because of the context.) Because Spock has the most recognizable haircut, ears, and eyebrows, you don't really need to make Spock look like Leonard Nimoy at all in order for someone to go "that's Spock." With art styles like these, giving Spock a small nose is totally fine.

These drawings below are still stylized, but it's clear that the artists were attempting not only to make the characters recognizable as the characters themselves, but furthermore, to capture some of the facial characteristics of the actors:

All of these artists did a lovely job on Spock's nose! But if they'd taken the time to capture Shatner's large forehead and round features and Nimoy's prominent cheekbones and square jaw, but then they'd given Spock a tiny little button nose, that would have been erasing one of Nimoy's main Jewish features (a feature that Jewish people have gotten a lot of hate for).

My goal here isn't to critique anyone's art skills. I know that sometimes someone might just struggle to capture Leonard Nimoy's features well, or maybe some artists straight-up didn't know he was Jewish, and that's totally okay! (I'm not keeping a list of artists who gave Spock a small nose). I just want to point out that this is not a feature that it's okay to intentionally change the same way it would be okay to go "I personally like the thought of Kirk being chubbier, so I'm going to make him chubbier."

(As a bonus, I want to highlight this artwork which is very cartoony but which still gives Spock a larger nose, which I think looks absolutely adorable)

They're extremely devoted to each other to the point of willing to die for each other. They're so mentally compatible that McCoy was able to hold Spock's katra and Spock and Kirk constantly mind meld.

A Triad that balances each other out, it could be argued that Spock is the brains, McCoy is the heart, and Kirk is the soul of the triad. They will fight to keep each other alive against all odds.

Scout/Soldier/Pyro/Demoman/Heavy/Engineer/Medic/Sniper/Spy:

First disclaimer: Because I am submitting 9 people, two of whom are related ([Spoilers] the Scout is the Spy’s son), and i don’t know how your rules work with polyamory other than “everyone is dating everyone else”, I want to clarify: this gets shipped in various ways (and i probably prefer some more convoluted version where everyone is in the polycule in some way but not everyone is dating everyone else), but i guess me submitting this means “everyone with everyone else except the incest”.

Second disclaimer, gender: Jane Doe is a guy. His name is Jane Doe but he is a guy. Nothing complex about his gender. Pyro, however, is of unknown gender. the canon description goes “he's a fearsome, inscrutable, on-fire Frankenstein of a man - if he even is a man”, and the character is commonly headcanoned to be  some sort of nonbinary, though they can really be interpreted as being of any gender. We don’t know anything about their perspective of their gender, but the game is often referred to as having an all male cast and so on. I don’t know man i just work here.

Okay disclaimers aside, this is funny! tumblr user thewolfofthestars (whom i am not affiliated with) is writing a very fun fanfic series with this premise. The characters get shipped into separate couples every which way, and there are plenty of compelling reasons (be it comic character dynamics, game mechanics, or both) to ship about every two, or three, or what have you, so why not just put them all together is what I’m thinking, yeah? there are quite likely more of them than in your ship, and they will probably win a ship battle, so why not a ship tournament. Or die funnily, that they also do.

The Goy-Washing of Mr. Spock

Mr. Spock is Jewish.

here's the deal- can Spock be played by Goyim? sure yeah, Quinto did a fine job, and I appreciate that he spent time with Nimoy to understand the character better.

but the point basically is that Spock wouldn't be Spock if Nimoy hadn't been Jewish. He would not be the character we know and hold dear. Literally the Vulcan salute alone is entirely due to Nimoy seeing something that struck a cord with him in temple when he was a child.

Nimoy created a character with traits we could identify with, a character that might make us feel seen. The article is largely satire, but the point is there is something in Nimoy so entwined with the character that someone else playing him will always feel... off.

Look I just think that if you’ve ever loved Star Trek, Like really loved it (not just had a passing interest or casually consumed it) then it’s gonna be a part of you forever. It injects a little whimsy in you. A little thoughtfulness and curiosity and wonder. I’ll watch Star Trek and every time I do I feel like a little kid staring up at the stars holding onto the grass. I’ll watch Star Trek and every time I’m sitting out sharing a sweater with my friend as we talk about Spock and the sun starts to set. I’ll watch Star Trek and it’s the same feeling of calm awe that I get when I sit in the aquarium.

Aliens aside it’s about humanity. It’s always about humanity and trying to understand despite it all (which I think is a core tenet of humanity). And if that compels you then it’s going to stay with you. No matter if the packaging is a bit silly. Maybe even because the packaging is silly.

I dislike AOS for many many reasons, but one thing that kinda stuck out to me is the specific way in which Spock's bullies talk about Amanda. They call her "that Human whore" or something, and tbh, I don't totally disagree with the idea that Vulcans could have this view on her, considering they are a pretty proud culture and a lot of time the racial othering of women does indeed go hand in hand with blatant sexism.

Having said that, I think it's a really interesting thing to consider a world where Amanda and Sarek are both well-liked and well-respected by their peers, because they both excel at being what they are. Sarek seems pretty close to the gold-standard for Vulcans (or at least, nobody ever implies otherwise) and I can also see people respecting Amanda for being unapologetically human, for not "pretending" to be something she's not even if she lives on Vulcan. They respect her, but only as far as she is shown to understand that she cannot be like them. So long as she makes it clear she is something else, then they won't judge her for not being able to be like them.

I like the idea of Amanda and Sarek both being "permissable" because they have chosen a thing to be and adhered to it, while Spock is unable to just neatly choose to be Human or Vulcan, and is instead a sort of combination of both, and THAT is what makes his Human heritage a point of contention amongst his peers. Since Vulcan culture is based off schooling yourself into an ideal, logical version of yourself, I think they'd be more accepting of Spock if he was able to simply make a choice and stick to it, even if that choice was to be Human. The fact that he can't, that he is multifaceted, that he contains multitudes that seems to conflict rather than conform to each other, is what makes him an outcast.
