The Hands On Approach by mattmetzger

Pairing: James T. Kirk/Leonard McCoy Universe: AOS Rating: Teen Word Count: 3,748

Summary: McCoy doesn't do the whole affectionate touching thing. But Jim does. K/M, a five and one that became a ten and nothing somewhere along the line.

Comments: Sweet and emotional and lovely. The small scenes are perfect little beats in their relationship.

The Passing of Fire Into the Blood by backinblack

Pairing: James T. Kirk/Spock Universe: AOS Rating: Explicit Word Count: 12,061

Summary: After a diplomatic mission goes horribly, humiliatingly wrong, Jim learns something surprising about Spock.

Comments: An alien-substance-made-them-do-it fic, half because of Jim’s allergies. Great characterizations - Spock is particularly good, with arousal and lowered inhibitions making him throw caution to the wind but still in a very reserved, Spock-like way.

Pairing: James T. Kirk/Leonard McCoy Universe: AOS Rating: Teen Word Count: 33,260 AU: Canon divergent, Academy era

Summary: Bones is basically Jim's automatic best friend right now anyway, and Joanna comes as a package deal.

Plus, she's adorable. And she likes space. That means she's technically more friend-material than Bones is, and Bones laughs when Jim says as much.

[Canon Divergence AU - McCoy takes Joanna to Starfleet. Enter: James T. Kirk].

Warnings: past child abuse, past domestic abuse, implied past alcoholism, past serious child illness, references to Tarsus (genocide, famine, and child death)

Comments: Absolutely adorable, I love the Bones-Jim-Jo dynamic. Joanna is a little delight and their love for her is so palpable. The author does an incredible job of slowly introducing bits of their pasts, mirroring the gradual deepening of Bones and Jim's relationship. Chef's kiss.

"Christ alive, look at you two." He brushes a lock of Joanna's curls aside and kisses her temple. For the briefest of seconds ever, it looks like he's going to kiss Jim too. He doesn't of course - because why would he? - and Jim's flash of disappointment immediately becomes a flash of something else when Bones rests his hand on the small of Jim's back.

Pairing: James T. Kirk/Spock Universe: TOS Rating: Teen Word Count: 7,671

Summary: Spock intends to resign his commission with Starfleet six months into the Enterprise's mission. Then he meets Captain Kirk – his t'hy'la – and everything becomes infinitely more complex.

Comments: Like a warm cup of tea. A personal favorite thanks to its minimal drama, gentle relationship building, and perfect characterizations (I am weak for pining Spock and a quietly confident Kirk).

Pairing: James T. Kirk/Spock Universe: AOS Rating: Explicit Word Count: 64,624

Summary: "'Spock,' Jim breathes out, completely overwhelmed by the gesture—not quite believing that Spock knows him so well, that's he's already started researching, that he trusts Jim with a member of his own endangered species."

When Jim gets it in his head to adopt an eight year old Vulcan, Spock presents a logical solution to the issue of Jim's humanity: marriage to a Vulcan citizen.

Warnings: implied childhood sexual abuse

Comments: A classic of the ship, and for very good reason. It's hard not to fall in love with Sorek, the adorble young Vulcan, and for everyone who likes a good pretend relationship fic, this is peak.

💙 The Third Wheel by littlebirdtold

Pairing: James T. Kirk/Spock Universe: AOS Rating: Explicit Word Count: 16,580

Summary: Academy AU. In which Cadet Kirk constantly crashes Cadet Uhura's dates with Commander Spock and monopolizes his attention.

Comments: As of right now, my all-time favorite Kirk/Spock fic. Jim is a lovable asshole who gets right under Spock’s skin. The banter and tension and sex are all so insanely good. And academy au, my beloved, you will never disappoint. I’ve reread this many times over the years and it never fails to satisfy.
