started yapping to my friend about the artemis II mission and got emotional beause I remembered that they discovered a bright spot/crater on the moon and named it after one of the crew members' late wife Carroll and UGH the entirety of this mission makes me feel things because they got so far from home yet still were human, still laughed and cried and felt empathy towards eachother. we are in space and we are still full of love. may Laika and Felicette lead our way.

We all adore Laika the space dog, and she deserves it.

but no one talks about Félicette, a french cat sent into space. She was sent up with electrodes in her brain, and electrocuted during the flight to stimulate her legs and muscles to move. Félicette survived the flight only to be euthanised so that her brain could be studied.

Félicette was chosen on a mission, survived despite the challenge only to be put down.

Félicette had been trained with 13 other cats. one was sent up after her, but upon a failed launch, the second cat had been exploded. most did not survive.

A monument was only erected 50 years after her space flight.

HOW ARE WE ALREADY MAKING UP ALTERNATE UNIVERSES FOR BLOODYMARY?!?!?? i’m still stuck on all the things that could be happening when simon gets wormholed through the light in the blood ocean BAM in front of the hail mary on the way back to erid, such as

-simon wakes up and immediately freaks the heck OUTTT and slams grace into the wall

-and promptly passes out

-when they make it to erid, rocky and adrian have two very sick men, both starving, one full of radiation to take care of

-when they cure grace, he gets to work helping to cure simon and when they fix him it’s a hug fest

-simon HATES the ocean enclosure because obviously the blood ocean fiasco, so they enlarge the enclosure and make a forest for simon to live in (there’s mountains too, simon loves the mountains)

-grace is taller

-there’s an age gap 😼 (simon is 30ish?? and grace is almost 50-or older?-when they get back to erid)

-they buzz their hair because hair holds memories and they’re desperate to just start over

-they’re all in a sort of giddy daze for the first couple of days because they SURVIVED, they’re ALIVE

-but after that wears off it’s kind of like death

-they’re miserable

-grace, not so much, because he’s finally safe, finally somewhere people love him, but he has trouble sleeping sometimes and he MISSES his kids like nothing else

-but simon? he has nightmares at night and wakes up screaming so he tries not to sleep

-rocky? all he can think about are his crewmates that he couldn’t save and their families who grieve

-and adrian? their mate, their rocky, is different, so different, and somehow the same, and it’s strange and they don’t know what to think, but they are determined to figure it out

-and it takes a while

-it takes a LONG time

-but eventually, walking beside each other the whole time, grace and simon and rocky and adrian are able to heal

-and laika and felicette are there too

Sorry, yeah. I saw a post about Félicette The Space Cat. Yeah, my cat is lying on top of me right now and just gave the biggest content sigh ever. Uh huh, unfortunately this made me picture her being sent to space and experiencing just how confused and scared and alone Félicette probably felt. Yes, that does mean I'm weeping over her again. Mmm, no. Sorry, I can't help wishing Félicette got to live and that I got to take her home and care for her forever even though she died before my parents were even born. Yeah, no. I don't think I'll ever be over this. Thanks.

since everyone is talking about laika and felicette, and i never hear people mention these two, i present to you belka and strelka (they have other names, but are known mostly by these two). they went to space, flew around the earth 17 times, landed back safely and lived to old age! and they deserve to be remembered too

I was simply going to draw them making out and call it a day.... and then I thought about Laika and Félicette and I got sad so I decided to take it seriously.

Anyway... obsessed with Project Hail Mary rn but who isn't. And I loved Iron Lung so....Sorry if I end up drawing them a lot.

Random thing for people to consider is that since Laika is the saint of one way trips should Felicette be known as the saint of safe landings since she did make it back to the ground safely
