today, I abandon the five star system
henceforth, whenever I read a book, I will be rating it according to the extent to which it approximates my experience of reading 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
example: “wow, this novel I read the other week was great! I would give it a solid 18,560 leagues under the sea”
pros of this system:
20,000 > 5 increments - facilitates much more precision in mercilessly pitting a reading list against itself
hypothetically no set maximum rating - a book could very well be more than 20,000 leagues under the sea (sacrilegious, I know, but in this chaotic day and age, we must be prepared for anything)
easy to interconvert with other systems of measurement (i.e., “that is to say, this novel was the equivalent of 64,069.12 miles under the sea”)
pretty sure this is not a feature on most review platforms yet, but I assume it’s only a matter of time
