i kind of don’t relate to the way other people Hate fictional characters in fandom spaces most of the time because to me a character is first and foremost a vehicle for Making A Story so if the character does Story. then it’s good. i don’t know how to explain what i mean by this. the only time i feel like i dislike a character is when i feel like their presence is not interesting and isn’t doing anything for my experience of Story. you know.
I know there was intent to parallel school shootings but I felt more like childhood SA.
The signs that he was being abused were there. But Justine was worried about getting in trouble with overstepping again, and the other kids picked at his softness in the same way Gladys did, nobody noticed his long walk home, the store didn’t glance at a child buying tons of soup every other day, the police had bigger things to worry about, the school avoided calling child services for as long as they could.
Then when other children begin to be abused, the entire community comes together to form mob justice, not to actually fix the problem or become a community that can help take care of children or prevent it from happening, but by finding the “perpetrator” and punishing them with violence - even if they’re wrong.
The drug abuser who has important information isn’t trusted despite actually being correct. The teacher with alcohol abuse problems is doubted in spite of being the only person who wants to investigate the child being abused in front of her. The father who lacked emotional depth with his son hopes to make up for it via revenge, but even then he smashes his way through the world.
The parents that let the abuser into the home are forever apart from their son. The other children revealing the abuser finally makes people believe that something wrong is happening, and the abuser is “eaten alive” by the community, the principal who avoided calling cps for weeks is “destroyed,” and the children can’t speak for years.
Something about how tragedy brings communities together but only superficially, a scapegoat is needed (particularly a woman), how the inherent trust of familial bonds can lead to abuse, a child who is clearly being groomed and neglected being ignored by the community who oh so suddenly is claiming to care about the children can lead to more tragedy, and a lack of communication even in a world filled with surveillance allows awful things to occur
I keep seeing the take that Weapons is about a school shooting and having just seen it last night, I don’t get that vibe at all. Like, to me, the themes of children being an oppressed class - the narcissism of the older generation not viewing children as living, thinking, feeling human beings but as either props for them to use when they’re fighting a pointless battle or as tools to enrich themselves somehow - and how that hurts everyone in a community in the long term is far more prevalent. The children are taken from their homes, in full view of their parents’ security cameras, and still no one was alerted. Rather than come together as a community and try to work together to find their children, the parents seem to isolate, to the point where the mother Archer approaches doesn’t seem to recognize him. The angry parents, Archer especially, all focus their rage on Justine even though the evidence against her is incredibly flimsy, simply because she is one of the only factors that ties them together and she is an easy target - she’s not a parent, she can’t TRULY care about the children, not like their FAMILIES do. Meanwhile, Archer didn’t realize until it was far, far too late that his emotional distance from Matthew was turning the kid into a horrible little shit. None of the parents or even the police ever gave even a thought to Alex - the OTHER thing that ties all the missing children together - who suffered for months IN HIS OWN HOME. Justine has to point out that the paths the children took as they left didn’t intersect at the radio tower, but at the Lilly home, because the thought never even crossed Archer’s mind. The danger was never the outside threat of the school, it was in a single family home on a quiet suburban street. But because Alex is a child, and not their child, the other parents pay exactly zero attention to him in the grand scheme of things, even though it should have been obvious to multiple people that something was seriously WRONG in Alex’s life. And this isn’t even bringing Gladys into things, when she herself is basically the personification of an abusive and/or neglectful home life. The police, the other parents, the school - they failed Alex miserably because they didn’t view him as a person, but as window dressing for their own grief.
Weapons (2025) was an absolute blast. Not gonna get into spoilers, but I found it to be thematically rich and a lot of fun. The ways in which we have systems and social niceties but no community. How all of these "safety measures" like the cops, the Ring cameras, and the school rules on professionalism all failed, barely contributed, or actively got in the way of solving things. The idea of the children and their safety being weaponized to form a mob. How people can manipulate the social expectations of family, professionalism, and even our empathy to abuse us. How children are an oppressed class.
It was also subtle, funny, tense, and all of the acting was top notch. Amazingly done by the guy who jerked off a ghost in WKUK

helena eagan whose destiny from birth was to be the future serene and placid face of lumon, who never once wavered from that path, even getting severed to prove her commitment to kier's vision, watching her innie be imperfect, impulsive, unsure, freely and openly affectionate and then receive affection and concern in turn with no strings attached.......yeah baby i'd rewind that security footage too

Like Outie Irving assumes his Innie is just as radically anti-Lumon as he is. He assumes his hatred of Lumon is something ingrained in his personality! That's why he stays up at night drinking coffee and making paintings, because he hopes that when his innie dreams about the testing floor, he'll say "okay bet" and start exploring. That's what Outie Irving would do, after all. But he miscalculated! His hatred of Lumon isn't inherent--- his desire for meaning and art and spirituality is inherent. That's what his hatred for Lumon is built on. But in a world where there's no meaning outside of Lumon propaganda, of COURSE his innie would become ridiculously devoted to the company.
And Helena!! She is the corporation, that's her whole identity. She presumably assumed that Helly would be just as pro-Lumon as she is. But she miscalculated too! Her devotion to the company isn't inherent, her headstrong and entitled nature is what's inherent! And in a world where she's denied any agency whatsoever, that manifests as rebellion.
It's the same dynamic flipped on its head. They both sent their innies in there with opposite intentions--- one to take down the company, one feed the company's expansion--- only to realize that rebellion and devotion aren't inherent characteristics. Their innies have become the exact opposite of their outie selves, while still being exactly the same!! Because even though your personality is inherent, the values you hold are determined circumstantially. OUGH IT'S SO GOOD.

If everyone could spend the next few weeks becoming a little more offbeat, a little more in touch with the strangeness of our world, maybe we could begin to replace the massive void he leaves.
