In India, Bihar is a dry state where alcohol is legally prohibited, and one goes to jail if found drinking. However, in the state capital Patna, I witnessed many strange cases of intoxications that are alarming for our society's future.
In the last two weeks, I encountered more than 25-30 poor teenagers, all of whom I found intoxicated using paper whitner – A substance readily available at stationaries shops.
I spent significant hours with each of them, trying to convince them to quit Inhaling whiteners. A few I captured videos on the camera, but not all. I failed to convince almost all of them except one who decided to quit right away on the spot.
In the evening, I saw a poor lean-thin guy walking with a paper whitener pen in his hand. I started following him, and finally, I stopped him and engaged him in the conversation. In the meantime, two more random people came there and started convincing him to quit inhaling paper whitner. I offered him food, juice, food grains in bulk, and much other assistance to the best of my capability.
Finally, he accepted that he has the habit of inhaling paper whitner and does daily labor jobs to earn bread-butter. Finally, after lots of struggle, he threw the intoxication substance in front of us. We took care of his meal and some other food grains to feed him for a few additional days. Then, a stranger offered him a job in some teaching institute on the spot. After talking to many intoxicated teenagers, I am happy that at least one decided to quit.
However, if you see any such kids intoxicated with any substance, please don't ignore it. Instead, come forward and engage with them in a discussion. Very likely, with your help, convincing style, coaching, and guidance, a kid may decide to quit intoxication and become a bright future for our community.
