When I was a kid, I learned a handy mnemonic to remember the order of the planets: “My very educated mother just served us nine pizzas.” (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto). I loved pizza, so it was very memorable.

Then, when Pluto fell from grace, the mnemonic had to change. No more pizza.

Now, the science folks over at the New York Times have suggested bringing the five dwarf planets recognized by the International Astronomical Union into the mix. That would mean adding Ceres, a giant asteroid, good ol’ Pluto, and three other dwarf planets that orbit outside Pluto (Haumea, Makemake, and Eris) to the list. The NYT also called for people to submit new #planetmnemonics to help remember the new order (MVEMCJSUNPHME).

I decided to doodle a few submissions (and one I made up) to make them even more memorable.

NOTE: Unfortunately, there are hundreds of dwarf planets out there waiting to be recognized by the IAU, so if we continue to update the mnemonic, it will soon be unmanageably long. But as Robert McNees says, “Mnemonics vex everyone. Maybe crazy, just start unforgetting names? People have memories, everybody.”
