Any conversation on modern literacy needs to keep in mind that people, by and large are lazy bastards who will find a way to be lazy. And while technically the decline in print media would coincide with a centralization of literature like the ol' dark ages, it doesn't guarentee that. The internet is an information genie never going back in the bottle, no matter how many restraints are put upon it. And sure, in the old days you had examples of the poor being erudite consumers of classics, organizing book clubs and the like. And you also had the inversion of the rich elite writing porn for each other and only consuming it. Being affluent does not ever guarentee taste, and there's just as many boring "safe" rich people as there are gallivanting freaks of nature consuming Plato. It's good to be worried about the future, but the next tech bro that appears with 6th grader prose in a quarter zip guarentees that the apocalypse for literacy isn't here. People will consume what they like, high or low brow.

The issue isn't that books aren't acceptable, as much as it is books aren't the only option. And what people consume is based on their own taste as much as it is their own ability to discern taste. You get one too many people claiming they can't "read classics" and this is how you get to having to explain Great Gatsby references to someone pushing 40. The public perception of difficulty and the artificial nature of "high" and "low" culture cuts any attempt to breach that veil, and maintains these paradigms.
