“It’s too much,” he protested with a sheepish expression. He wasn’t sure what he was supposed to have said or done but, apparently the woman had taken his actions as being unkind in some manner. “Well I won’t really disagree there. Not ta’ sound rude ma’am but, nabbin’ a coffee out of a stranger’s hands isn’t the best a’ ideas. If you’d jus’ asked I would have given it to you er bought you one— but kindly take this back. I don’t need your money ma’am. You don’t owe me anythin’.”

“It’s nothing, don’t worry.” She replied shaking her head. “It’s fine, I get it, and I understand that hence why I’m giving you a twenty to get another, hell get a coffee every day for the next week. Just accept it and I’ll be out your hair. Give it to a homeless guy, or put it in a charity box for all I care. I can’t apologise enough for it.” Etty finished, motioning to the garbage where she’d just put the full cup of coffee.

Lily’s brows furrowed in utter confusion as the girl put down the coffee she had just taken from her. “Hold on… you just snatched coffee out of a stranger’s hands and I’m the one being made out to be rude? That’s fucking logical. And now you’re not even going to drink the damn thing” she shook her head, undeniably annoyed by what she had just witnessed. “You can’t just expect to steal someones coffee, not even drink more than a sip and still have that person be perfectly pleasant to you. Maybe that’s how things work wherever the fuck you came from but that’s not how they work in the real world”

Etty lifted her hand to her brow for a second before running it through her hair, looking at the girl, who no matter how much she had protested had clearly not been brought up with any manners of her own at all. “I never once denied that maybe it was rude of me. No I’m not going to drink the damn thing because frankly I’m disgusted by your entire attitude, I would have passed it to you but by the way you're acting you're coming across highly like one of those girls that would just throw it at me when giving it you back.” She paused and shook her own head. “I never expected you to be perfectly pleasant, but don’t expect the same in return when you’ve clearly not had the best of upbringings either.”

“The day that happens, you’ll have to give that medal posthumously to be honest. I don’t think I’ll successfully make it through that day. My ear for accents is terrible. Probably something to do with the fact that I’ve never been anywhere. I’m Baltimore born and bred. This is as far as I’ve ever been outside of it. New Zealand sounds pretty exotic, I have to say. You have the money for that? Because in that case there are so many better uses you could put it towards. Don’t worry about it, I’m used to dealing with the school as it is. Wait, the only person? That seems a bit strange. As far as I know most people in Town are pretty welcoming.”

“I’ll make sure the medal stays in an extremely safe place. Really, you should travel more, there’s so many magnificent places that could take your breath away if you were to let them. Parts of it are pretty exotic, others are just like here, I live right on the beach though, so it’s pretty special. Not that I have the money, but it’s my job, the least I could do is pimp out the teachers hangout. I guess I just got people on their bad days, my luck tends to do that to me.”

Sebastian only looked even more baffled as she dropped the coffee into the trash bin, not understanding why she hadn’t just kept it for herself as he’d intended her to. Flustered he’d stammered a bit as she stuffed the twenty into his pocket, “Ma’am. I-I don’t need this, really.” He’d pulled for it to extend it back towards her, “I’d a’ much rather you’d kept that coffee fer yourself– since you’d taken it, I thought ya’ wanted it. I can jus’ get another cup at the hospital.”

Etty held her hand up to stop him from trying to give her back to twenty. “It’s fine, take the twenty, and buy yourself a knew one. I shouldn’t have taken it in the first place.” She shook her head and exhaled a little. It would have been worse for her if she’d have kept the coffee after their exchange, all she needed was for him to accept the money and for her to go back home and act as if the beginning of this day hadn’t ever really happened.

“Will you add it to your will for me? The name’s Angelo Fraser,” he said with a smirk, but his amusement faltered when he saw her standing up, and shoving a twenty underneath. “Hey,” he said, grabbing the money and bringing her attention back. “I don’t fucking want this? I was joking.”

Letty came to a halt as she heard Angelo shout. “And if I was joking I wouldn’t have given it you.” She said, running a hand through her lightly curled tresses. “Keep it. I owe you one anyway, Angelo Fraser.”

Chase rolled her eyes. “It’s cool, just don’t take my shit.” She took her cup back and looked at the lip stick stain on the rim. “Especially when you’re wearing lips.” Chase laughed and threw the drink in the trash. “I’m Chase.”

Etty watched as the girl rolled her eyes. “I’ll get you a new one.” She said with a small exhale. “At least it wasn’t red.” She replied with her own laugh, nodding as the girl introduced herself. “I said before, but Etty is better anyway.”

“… okay, you caught me there. The day I deal with a few hundred teenagers without coffee is the day the sun sets in the east. We have our dramas same as anywhere but it’s not quite as hectic as living in a big city. I don’t remember if you mentioned where you came from. Are you saying you want to pimp our school, basically? Well, you’re more than welcome to try, it certainly could use it.”

“See I knew it! The day that happens I will personally give you a medal of congratulations. I thought the accent might have been a sheer giveaway, I’m from New Zealand, Auckland actually. I’ll pimp the school, mainly just because you’ve got me feeling a little sorry for you, and you’re the only person that has actually been nice to me since I’ve arrived.”

“… Alright, if you could not say it like we’ve stepped out of a fucking terrible TV movie, that would befantastic. I fucking paid for that coffee. You owe me, at the very least, your tears when realizing you have a month to live.”

Etty rolled her eyes before settling them on Angelo before placing the near full cup down on the surface next to him. “Don’t worry I’ll make sure to catch a tear when I’m on my death bed.” She replied coldly, shoving a twenty under the edge of the cup before plunging her purse into her bag and turning on her heel to leave.

“You know you’re usually supposed to ask rather than just take things from people” Though her tone seemed playful, the scowl on her face made in apparent that she wasn’t joking. “But clearly you were raised without any fucking manners. You can keep the coffee simply because I don’t want your germs but you owe me one” Lily nodded to show that she acknowledged the other’s name yet didn’t return the favor of offering her own.

Etty’s eyes widened as the girl in front of her insulted her upbringing, and instantly she put the cup on the nearest flat surface. A small laugh escaped her lips as the girl then proceeded to say she owed her one. “You lost all chance of me owing you one, when you insulted my upbringing.” Etty shook her head and turned to start her walk away, the people in this place were not nice.

He’d shook his head when she tried to hand the cup of coffee back off to him, “No. That’s yers now. It’s fine, miss.” There was a pause before he added, “Bein’ that I work in the medical field I don’t tend ta’ be fond a’ jokes about life threatening diseases.”

Etty was taken a back with what he said it seemed no one around here had her sense of humour or really took a liking to her, and noticing a trash can not far from them she instantly dunked the nearly full coffee cup into it. Pulling her purse from her bag she opened it up and pulled out a twenty, folding it before shoving it in the pocket of his shirt. “There’s money for another, keep the change.”

“That’s not really sanitary ma’am,” he’d choked out in a bit of shock as his eyebrows furrowed at her.

“Nor is 95% of the day to day things we do, sugar.” Etty teased as she noticed just how shocked he was that she’d taken his coffee, handing it back to him she smiled. “I don’t have any life threatening disease, I promise.”

“If you insist, I’m not going to argue but it’s really okay. I can live without coffee for a day. I’ll just put in a movie and call it good. Etty it is. Wonderful to meet you as well, of course. And welcome. Hopefully you like it around here. Personally I happen to be rather fond of the place.  It’s not really a nice room either. School budgets aren’t exactly splendid.”

“Now I think you’re lying, it isn’t possible to live without coffee, not even for a day. I’m sure I will, all the people seem lovely so far, which can only be a good thing. I suppose it’s a good thing I’ve appeared then, there’s not many rooms I can’t turn into something spectacular.”

“God, sorry. My deadly, incurable and extremely contagious disease kicking in. I’m Angelo.”

“Oh, Angelo.. It looks like we’ll have to die together then, wont we?”

“It’s fine, don’t worry about it. Consider that my welcome to Town gift. I’m Seth by the way. You caught me a bit off guard so I forgot to say that. Seth Elkins. The room isn’t that bad but I’d rather avoid teachers as much as possible. Most teachers anyway.”

“Trust me it is the least I could do. Though it is probably the best welcome to town gift I’m ever going to receive. Seth, it’s lovely to meet you, I’m Ettienne, but like I said before, Etty is better. Yeah I suppose it doesn’t matter how nice the room is if you don’t like the people in there.”

“Yes it is, I ju–oh, alright. If you’re that desperate, go ahead and have it. I can get some more later. There’s always some in the staff room… I just hate going in there.”

“I promise that I will repay you, I just got back into town and didn’t have time to pick my own up. Is it really that bad? I thought the staff room might be some sort of solace.”
