Some thoughts under the cut.

IT'S FINALLY DONE and I'm so happy with it~ 32 hours in the making. As in, I can point out at least a dozen things I could have kept correcting but GOOD ENOUGH IS GOOD ENOUGH.

As previously mentioned drawing Nice seems to reawaken my mostly cured perfectionism, which my therapist is having a field day with. Still, I want to keep drawing him.

I had to learn how to do blended shading in Procreate for this but it turned out decently I think

"Yeah my weakest points are probably hands and blended shading" *proceeds to draw 24 individually shaded hands*

Finally figured out how I want to do my signature going forward, yay!

It's done! Hand for scale :3 I'm planning to make a shoulder bag strip out of it.

Weaving goes so fast! It's very satisfying! (mind you, I'm primarily a cross-stitcher, and that's SOOOOOO time consuming)

Some thoughts under the cut.

Gotta say, the perfectionism is hitting me like a freight train on this. I consider myself a mostly recovered perfectionist, yet evidently something about Nice is bringing that part of me back with a vengeance. Curious! I redrew the lineart twice. I changed the plan like six times. One day, I spent two whole hours just tweaking the face shape only to discover I basically returned to how it had been. I'm not usually like this; I just draw, and accept the thing however it comes out. Not with this one though. Sigh.

I also re-learnt blended shading. Procreate is so much comfier than my old setup. I guess I'm tweaking so much cause I now have the freedom to; the lineart itself would've taken ages with my old Huion. There's a popular saying in my country that if you feel limited by your tools, you're not truly good at what you do - and I'm just now discovering that's a bullshit take. Good tools change SO. MUCH. So I'm still having tons of fun working on this, even if it is taking a while. Having to learn a new toolset as I go is probably also making the process longer. Still fun! And it'll look great once it's done <3

Nice and Lin Ling

I once heard someone say the reason Nice couldn’t climb the hero ranks was because he stood for nothing.

That while other heroes had messages and politics, Nice did not.

And I think even while pretending to be Nice Lin Ling did stand for something, that despite the control of Miss J he was slowly making the Nice persona into something closer to a true hero.

The original Nice was created to be nice and liked by all, sanitized and unproblematic. To the degree anything resembling a personality or opinions could never form and as such the game he gained was largely from a superficial audience.

The original Nice was a mask with nothing of substance underneath by design.

In contrast, the reason Lin ling was able to climb the ranks so quickly despite his relatively short time as a hero (compared to the years Nice spent as one) was due to the fact he made moves, he was genuine and thus he carried meaning.

His heartfelt and genuine speech on the show.

His tears at Moon’s funeral

His empathy towards Wolf girl

Him saving Firm man 

In that short list he already showed more character and substance than Nice his entire career and as such was able to climb much quicker and higher than OG Nice ever could.

It was because of these actions that The Commoner went from being a nobody to the top 10 hero. It was because of those actions that Nice’s fans began trusting Lin Ling despite having been a fact, they remembered his tears and devotion, the vulnerability of them. Which in turn made them believe in him.

The original nice was limited by the persona he was given and by having Shang De’s personal oversight. In that way having Miss J as a manager was beneficial to LL, because while strict and ruthless she was willing to listen to Ling Ling and did not just impose his opinion on him like Shang De did.

Combined with how they treated Moon... it makes me think, in general, about Treeman's approach to hero promotion. It sure seems like the company has overall very weak grasp on what actually makes heroes truly adored. Like, they know how to create and promote a brand, but not foster genuine attachment. It's like Shang De understands the mechanics of the system very well, but not really the authentic emotion that propels it. Possibly because he's so consumed with the idea of avenging his son? Or maybe it's simply that it's not really his field. It's like he's just going through the motions, but it's not enough when there's no genuine heart in it.

Look at DOS for comparison. Micky is as much of a slimy bastard as Shang De, but he really excels at capitalizing on his heroes' authenticity. He understands where and when to place them to best accentuate their individual styles. No wonder DOS has three heroes in the top ten, and all three with really distinct, vivid personalities.
