In 2001, my mom was diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disease, rendering her disabled. Since then, her main source of income has been Social Security Disability, and she earns just over $1000 a month. Because I was eleven years old at the time, this money was meant to keep us fed and clothed, to pay bills, and to keep a roof over our heads. It was difficult, and by 2010, we were driving a car that was duct taped together and our house was in foreclosure. Two years ago, were on the verge of living in that car when we were able to move into a low income apartment. Things were starting to look up for the two of us. My mom took on a part time job at ShopRite until the pain in her back was too much for her to handle. With that part time job, she was able to purchase her first brand new car: a plasma purple Mitsubishi Mirage. She was so proud of that car. It was unique, it had personality, and everyone knew it was her on the road. It was her baby.
On May 28th, 2017, I was admitted to the hospital. I was hemorrhaging; My blood pressure dropped to 60/30, I lost four pints of blood, received seven units, and underwent two surgeries. When I woke up on May 30th, I was connected to a respirator in the intensive care unit. I was discharged on June 2nd and I was readmitted on June 4th with an infection from my surgeries and an ileus that caused me to spit up several liters of bile. My doctor placed a nasogastric tube and another three gallons of bile was suctioned out. I cannot, and I don't think I will ever be able to fully grasp how much stress this put my mom through.
I was due to be discharged on June 9th, and my mom planned on picking me up in our plasma purple Mirage. When she left after our visit on June 8th, she was stopped at the traffic light at the hospital's exit. A driver in the outside left lane turned across three other lanes of traffic to enter the hospital, causing another driver to swerve to avoid hitting the first driver. Both cars drove into my mom's car at 55 miles per hour, pushing her into another car. There weren't even any skid marks at the scene of the accident. All of the airbags in the car deployed. Her earrings were blown out of her ears and her favorite keychain even shattered. She was taken directly to the emergency room with chest pains and my nurse brought me down from my room to sit with her. Later in the emergency room, while her x-rays were being taken, she realized that she had pain in her leg. No fractures were found, but her pains have only been getting worse.
Our car was totaled and with her fixed income, my minimum wage job, student loans, and our combined poor credit, purchasing a car, whether new or used, is very unlikely. Between all of the stress that she has been through between my health issues and the loss of her car, my mom cries on a daily basis and absolutely it breaks my heart. My mom did everything in her power to give me a good life, no matter how hard it was for her, especially financially. She is my rock and my best friend. After all that she has been through, I only want to see her happy and I am asking for your help to make this happen for her.
