Gray absolutely hated summer. For him, it was a time of garish, loud festivals, filled with far too many people that just refused to stop dripping sweat all over the place. He couldn't bear watching them hold hands, brush against each other, or really make any sort of contact to spread the salty fluids all over each other. It was just... unhygenic. Which sounded ironic, coming from a blacksmith with his head in the gritty mines day in, day out, but he always remembered to shower after a grueling trip to fetch his gems.
It wasn't all bad, of course; Kai came to visit in summer, and the two bunked together up in Doug's inn. He was a really pleasant guy. On the competitive side, and a little loud for Gray's more moody, quiet tastes, but all in all they got along well.
As well as that, the grumpy young man had a specific ritual on every summer weekend, just after 10pm. He couldn't really carry it out on weekdays, since Saibara always seemed fired up for 5 straight days of pushing him to the brink of death, but on Friday he seemed to gradually lose his energy, shrinking back down into someone fitting of his age. So, Gray would take these moments of relaxation to head down to Mineral Beach, a place mostly deserted due to the chilly evening breezes. But he loved it; the slight hum of the wind, just crisp enough to keep him awake; the tranquility of desertion; being alone there while everyone else was cozy in bed, the only one experiencing such emotional contentment... It was a beautiful time, and one that he looked forward to and cherished.
But this time, the peace was about to be shattered. Gray plonked down on the sand, relishing in the cool, biting touch of it brushing his fingers, when he heard gentle treads crunch behind him. Groaning internally, he leaned his head back with a bitter scowl, only to see...
Dear Diary... 27/08/14
I was thinking that I should probably name this something more manly. Like, diary? Really? I can't think of anything else yet, though...
It's been pretty quiet around here these last couple weeks. Pretty lonely, so I might go somewhere soon. Maybe Flowerbud? I heard it's nice there, and Claire told me you could buy massive bags and stuff.
Yeah, I think I might do that.

A Friend || @Gray
Gray arched a brow at her musings, shrugging indifferently with a dismissive grunt.
"Yeah, I guess it does, but it doesn’t justify it. He needs to realize that I’m really not a genius myself, or, not yet anyway." He wondered if he was too whiny sometimes; he did appreciate all Saibara did for him, really. Smiling coyly at her positivity, he offered an enthusiastic nod and kept walking.
They were almost at the mines by now, and he turned to her for a moment.
"Oh, Flowerbud? What’s it like there?" He asked. "Saibara goes sometimes for different ores and stuff, but he never lets me come along. I’ve heard it’s a nice place." He rambled on, starting to set down his equipment before waiting for her to grab the stuff she needed. "A bottomless rucksack might not be the best thing, though," Gray chuckled softly, wondering if she’d struggle with finding her hammer among so many other tools and bags. It must be hard to lug that thing around everywhere, he thought admirably.
The mines gradually shifted into view, as Claire lugged along in comfortable company. She tried to wrap her head around the situation Gray had at home, but she had offered him all the solutions she could come up with already. All they could do was keep on trekking forward in their lives and maybe, just maybe, Saibara would slow down for Gray to catch up. If Saibara refused, it didn’t mean Gray had to stop moving forward.
She nodded in quiet understanding as he complained about Saibara’s weak justification. They had a perplexing connection tying them together but the bridge between their mutual understanding wasn’t as strong as what either of them wanted. “Just keep on moving forward, Gray. Only time will tell, right?”
Claire signaled him forward in unbridled excitement, as she strolled into the mine’s entrance. “Flowerbud’s got that ‘infinite possibility’ feel to it, you know?” She murmured distractedly as she pulled out her trusty upgraded hammer. “It’s just full of colorful people and all these new experiences that they don’t have back here. And tool sorcerers. Don’t forget the sorcerers.” Claire chuckled in faint amusement.
"Eh? What do you mean? A bottomless bag sure helps a girl out when she needs it, haha! Unless…" She threw him a mischievous side eye before pacing herself faster into the depths of the cave. "…You’re afraid I’ll out mine you and bring back more ores! In which case, I’ll take that as a challenge!" With a bold grin and eyes that sparked at a challenge, she brought down her hammer.
He tilted his head to the side, like some confused puppy as he contemplated her words. Keep moving forwards... Well, that was really the only option for him, he guessed, but it was quite a positive ideology nonetheless. He'd never paid much heed to his personal progress before. It had always been solely about pleasing, or catching up to, Saibara. But he actually did alright by himself, he supposed. Ignoring his grandfather.
"Yeah, I guess that's what you gotta do." He nodded slowly, agreeing but still thinking pretty hard about it all. Just a few words had really opened his eyes to a lot of stuff relating to him personally.
Gray wondered what Flowerbud was like. From his transition from the city to Mineral Town, he wasn't unfamiliar to change or new surroundings, but the idea still interested him. Maybe he'd head over there sometime, see how things work; maybe if he told Saibara it was to get experience from the blacksmiths... wait. "Tool sorcerers?" He asked, bewildered. Like, people who magically create tools? People who control tools? What?
Arching a brow in amusement, he shook his head as he watched her for a moment. "I've been a blacksmith for years, Claire. Longer than you, anyway." He grinned, whipping out his hammer and beginning to make efficient work on the stones. "You really think you could beat me~?" Of course, it was all in good jest; his lilting tone and redeemed smile proved that well enough. It was fun to have some friendly competition, sometimes.
Confusion & Someone New || Gray & Xiao Pai
A man shuffled in awkwardly, hands deep in the confines of his pockets and eyes cast down. They widened at the sound of a female voice; suddenly alert and even anxious. When they landed on a pretty young woman’s face they softened significantly, and he relaxed a little.
"Hey." He greeted with a small, respectful nod. "Uh, not new or anything. Just… nah. I wanted to talk to the man himself, really, but it’s okay." He shrugged dismissively and moved to lean against the counter. His demeanour was casual but stiff; slightly uncomfortable, still, but he hadn’t run away yet so it could be worse. He glanced over at her again, feeling as though he should start up some sort of conversation before shaking his head and looking down again.
"Uh… Whatcha here for?" He mumbled.
She smiled at the somewhat seemingly reserved man for a moment, and nodded. “Ah, I see. It seems just a visit then, yes?” She said, a bit curious about him and where he came from. "Oh….it seems I do not know when he comes back…he leaves just randomly." She said, frowning slightly and then blinking. "I can let him know if I see him around!" She said with a nod. She smiled at the fact he wanted to make some kind of conversation. “It seems I am here to get a new Battle Axe for safety when I go to the forest, yes?” She said, and then frowned slightly. “But I do not know what to get or what is best…one like the one I had before is okay, but it seems the wooden handle is splintering and the axe is dulling, yes.” She said with a nod and then smiled again. “What brings you here?” She asked curiously.
"It is." He nodded stiffly. Really, he just wanted to check out what other towns had to offer; maybe see some authentic gems, pick up on some techniques, get some more experience... Saibara had only let him go for a couple days, but it was enough. At least he was trusted to leave in the first place.
Gray didn't know how to feel about her helpful attitude. In one way, it was quite sweet; endearing, almost, but in another she could just be patronizing him. You could never be too safe, in his opinion. "Yeah, he does that." He offered as a simple response, set with a tiny nod. Truth be told, he had no idea what the man did. He'd never even met him before. "Thanks, though."
"Ah, I can probably help-" He began to suggest, a tiny light sparking in his eyes as his strong point (helping, and suggestions,) came up. But he faltered; due to Saibara's incessant pushing, scolding and sometimes belittling of him, he honestly didn't have all that much confidence in his abilities. He shrunk back against the counter again. "Splintering is inevitable, sorta thing," he started to mumble, "you just have to be gentler with it, I guess, maybe. And you could get an anvil or something, maybe even just a file to keep your blade sharp yourself. I could give you some pointers on how to do that, maybe." It was like word vomit. He couldn't stop himself talking about it!
His mellow blue gaze flicked upwards to meet her own in a hasty fashion, blond brows arched in surprise. "M-Me?" He stuttered, "Oh, uh, right." And relaxed again. "I come from Mineral Town, somewhere east from here, I think. Such a boring place." He wrinkled his nose in disgust, "Anyway, I'm an apprentice blacksmith myself, and I just wanted to check out some new tools n' stuff, yknow? See how people do it elsewhere."

"Hmm…" Xiao Pai said as she looked around Bado’s Blacksmith shop curiously. No one was there. She sighed a bit, personally wanting to have had some input on what she wanted, but luckily, Bado went by the honors system and trusted people to pay for their goods while he was out. She always thought that was so kind of him, especially given the money driven person he was; but everyone in town always was faithful. She examined carefully the area. She was looking for a new battle axe- perhaps one a bit more sturdy? It could be the same one as she had now, but this one had just started becoming dull and the wood was starting to splinter. She frowned, looking around a bit forlornly. “It seem I should maybe wait…” She said with a sigh and then blinked as someone else opened the door, and turned around, almost tripping on her own feet in the process. "Oh! He o!" She said with a smile as the man with a UMA hat walked in. She blinked for a moment. "It seems I have not seen you here before….are you new?" She asked curiously but politely, and then glanced over to the counter. "Oh, if you wondering, the blacksmith is out right now…but he goes by the honor system, so you can still buy things, yes?" She said, hoping to be informative somehow to the newcomer or visitor-whoever this man may be.
A man shuffled in awkwardly, hands deep in the confines of his pockets and eyes cast down. They widened at the sound of a female voice; suddenly alert and even anxious. When they landed on a pretty young woman's face they softened significantly, and he relaxed a little.

"Oh! Right!" He spluttered, slightly caught off guard by both her encouragement and her playful nudging. It was kind of… well, it was almost cute.
Jolting in shock, he promptly shook such an embarrassing thought from his mind and jogged to catch up with her, grinning pretty hard. Maybe Saibara would notice him, if he kept working hard… it would be a long wait, but he was feeling pretty hopeful at the moment.
"Of course, he’s a genius when it comes to tools." Somehow, he was gradually beginning to relax around Claire. It was a quick advancement, he supposed, but a welcome one nonetheless. "And I’m sure he’d appreciate a few extra ores; I mean, where else would I take them anyway?" He shrugged. "D’you already have all your tools or do you want to pick them up and meet me there?" He asked, catching up and quickly adapting to her pace.
Adjusting the straps of her rucksack for a moment, Claire waited for him to catch up. You know, for such a down to earth kind of guy, he seemed as though he had his head stuck in the clouds. Maybe he had too many things buzzing around at the moment…
"A genius, huh? That explains a lot…" Claire never really questioned where Saibara got his skills until then. She always supposed that it was purely from years of experience. If he really was a genius, it’d explain why he was so hard on his grandson. Being born top class definitely gave you higher expectations. "Y’know, even geniuses have to start somewhere." Claire murmured her incoherent, broken-up thoughts under her breath.
"Uh, I mean, that would explain why he’s so hard on you all the time. Being a genius would mean he’s forging items on a whole other playing field…" Claire quickly tried to piece together her thoughts to make some sense for the poor guy. It was a good thing Gray could keep up with her; sometimes she beat to her own drum without any consideration for the people around her. “Anyways, he’d probably grab at any type of ores he could get, you know? So then it’d be a win win! I could get some ores to ship off and you could bring some home to Saibara.”
"Yep! I’ve got all that covered, thanks to this rucksack I bought over at Flowerbud," Claire paused for a moment to point her thumb back at her trusty bag. "Mineral Town rucksacks can barely carry a thing! I think Flowerbud’s using sorcery to make these things bottomless." She was kidding of course, but that didn’t stop her from wondering…
Gray arched a brow at her musings, shrugging indifferently with a dismissive,
"Yeah, I guess it does, but it doesn't justify it. He needs to realize that I'm really not a genius myself, or, not yet anyway." "Psh, I know he means well, and it’d be disrespectful to do something like that." He shrugged nonchalantly, "He does try to help me… Still! A little praise would be nice sometimes…" Smirking, he admitted to himself that it was also partly because the old man would kill him if he asked for anything like that. He did want to make him proud, in the end.
"Oh, cool!" He eagerly nodded, before catching himself, "Uh, I mean, that’s fine. When do you want to go?" The comment on blushing made him arch a brow as he turned away, pondering on it as he wandered onwards. "Hm… do I really? I guess I’m just… bashful." Well, he was certainly being honest with himself today.
"Well if he doesn’t see how much potential you’ve got, he’s definitely blind. But I’m pretty sure he’s got a good head attached to his body so…" Tapping her chin, Claire was scheming up a plan of her own to go privately talk to Saibara a little later on. Maybe she could convince the old man to lighten up. "He’s bound to acknowledge you eventually!" It might just take a little persuasion….
"Bashful? Yeah that sounds about right, pfft." Claire chuckled to herself as the word sunk in. It suited him just perfectly, right down to the crimson hue that brushed at his cheeks. Nudging him playfully with her shoulder, she shot an inquiring eyebrow. "Ehhh? Don’t tell me you already forgot where we agreed to go to! The mines, Gray, the mines!" Picking up the pace, she followed the cobbled lanes through town.
"Maybe you can mine up a gem or two to bring home, right?" Turning her head back towards him, she chuckled, "Come on! What are you waiting for?"
"Oh! Right!" He spluttered, slightly caught off guard by both her encouragement and her playful nudging. It was kind of... well, it was almost cute.
Jolting in shock, he promptly shook such an embarrassing thought from his mind and jogged to catch up with her, grinning pretty hard. Maybe Saibara would notice him, if he kept working hard... it would be a long wait, but he was feeling pretty hopeful at the moment.

He asked, catching up and quickly adapting to her pace.
What do you really think of Minori and Claire? If you had to pick one to go on a date with, who would you choose and why? And tell the truth! Have you THOUGHT about kissing either one of them?
W-What a question...
That's stupid, though! I wouldn't... I mean... I'd never go out with either of them! Wait, that was kind of harsh, but... why are you asking me this? Are you one of them? Oh my god, you are, aren't you!
I'll never tell! And of course I've thought of kissing them; they are both pretty cute...
