You know mechsploitation as a genre is good and all but i feel like theres a surprising amount of themes and concepts that aren’t really touched on due to the common power dynamics people write about. Like, yes its good and all, but i do think that people could really afford to take a closer look at how ‘breaking’ a hound in effects them psychologically, and more importantly the inherent incompleteness of refashioning a person. I mean there is no “true loss of self” as much as we’d all like to pretend, you’re still you, even if its buried deep below layers of trauma and reeducation (if you even like to ascribe to the concept of a truer self in the first place that is). Either way, i think that blurry-lined edge between was and is, is far hotter than seeing a broken hollowed out girl say yes ma’am with a smile. Sure that sort of thing fits the fantasy of loosing your autonomy and responsibilities a bit better, the excision of self in place of another’s will, but thats not really how it works. No matter how much i torture you, no matter how much i rip your mind to little pieces, there will still be some sliver of self clawing at the walls of your own skull. Which works out perfectly really, I don’t want a broken down doll, i want to see what little fragments of self are left, and how painfully they grate against the new person they’ve become. I want to see how a broken little animal of a girl struggles to be, because there are immutable parts of her that are still human. We are awfully adaptive creatures, after all, but you and i both know some part of you is aware of whats happening. Some part of you knows what you’re conforming to, that these are all decisions you’re making, even under duress. That this is something you actively choose every time you hear an order. Some part of you still screams in the distant recesses of your mind when you hear yourself fall to my every command.

Haecceity - “Thisness”. The cosmic particle of Ding an sich - the thing itself.

This accretes into Esseity - raw concept-mass. Heft. How much concept does this have. “Green” is much more essential than “grue”.

This is sorted into Quiddity - “Whatness”. What distinguishes this type of thing.

This is coloured into Qualia - The properties of a thing, the subjectiveness of a subject. For a mortal, this is experiences, as well as why you’re not the exact same as the archetype of what you are.

This quickens into Puissance - by dint of an object’s power, what it can see done. How does it effect the world?

This is inscribed into Provenance - where has this been, and what has it done? The personal history of an object.

This anchors Haecceity - you can tell it’s this thing in particular because it was this thing in the past. Continuity.

That’s the main cycle, but what about the axes?

Haecceity and Qualia are the sides of the soul, the spirit, the unseen.

Esseity and Puissance are both the bodily aspects, the substance, what a thing is made of.

Provenance and Quiddity are both the mental aspects, the structure, the schema, how a thing’s matter and thought are arranged.

The two triangles are the ‘hot’ and 'cold’ aspects of the cycle, how energy travels back and forth, emitting Ipseity - The Work Extracted, the Self, the Identity. The triangles take the form of limitations. How are these things constraining the others?

Haecceity -> Quiddity: FORM: the bare this given an outline, a point pinned into a kind.

Quiddity -> Puissance: BLADE: the limitation of strength on the what, on the nature, the kind pares the power down to an edge.

Puissance -> Haecceity: FURNACE: power hot enough to melt down self, to truly change a thing, force to unmake identity.

This is the Form triangle, the heat, the cycle of a smith - shape the blank, sharpen the blade, melt it back down.

Esseity -> Qualia: QUENCH: Raw stuff cooling, crystallising, grain setting, fixing the texture.

Qualia -> Provenance: MATTER: the felt present lays down the record - only what has been experienced is what memory is made of.

Provenance -> Esseity: SILT: The past settles again into weight; what a thing was determines what it can yet be. This is the Matter triangle, the cold, the settling of sediment and fossils.

i don't have much personal umbrage with magic the gathering but i do have to say it is quite funny watching people lose their mind over the reddit game releasing reddit game expansions

the closer you get to the heart of nerd culture (tabletop, card games, video games, comics, tv shows, etc- i overgeneralize) the more of a poison it becomes for the mind. you have to seriously detach yourself from the pleasure you receive from any of these products or else you will experience a significant despair when they inevitably sell out to their prioritized cismale audiences.

For me, as someone deep in the trenches, I don't technically mind it. If people enjoy seeing their favorite characters on cards, then by all means.

Heck, if it gives Wizards the opportunity to design cards that would normally not have been possible, I'm totally with it.

People were mean to TMNT, but we've gotten the most mutant support ever since Fallout. Mutant wasn't even really a deck archetype before that.

Does it matter if the set has the brand on it?

My only real problem is when they flood the set with the same characters without giving any intention to making them all interesting. Lord of the Rings did great to highlight the same characters but at different points in their story. Final Fantasy did it correct as well, given how deep and wide that franchise goes. They had tons to pull from and only a few repeat characters (with distinct, interesting mechanics, which is fine)

A Spiderman set with a bunch of Spidermen that have 90% boring spider synergies and without any consideration for each character's depth of story? That's a problem.

So yeah, I don't have a problem with branded sets. I have a problem with an unoriginal, boring design that leans on the franchise's fanbase and pulling in "new players" instead of supporting actual players who love the game.
