‘Cheese, Branston Pickle, Butter’ says the SCRAWL on the paper, and he tucks it away into his pocket and pulls at the strap of his bag as he looks at Don. He thinks maybe he wants to say something, but doesn’t quite know what. The plan is made, and they’ll set out at the decided time. Nothing else to fuss over until then. But to be wholly frank, David’s never made a proper trip like this without guidance, and he thinks he MUST be forgetting something because this does not seem at all like the visit-packed, nonstop holidays his family plans. Should he find more for them to do? Will Don get bored if they make their one stop and mill about – take the weekend as it comes?

“Well I supposed I’d better head for home then, and prepare the rations.” He doesn’t move. He looks about him for a moment, as if evaluating for the first time a street he’s always known, as if he might decide to set off, but nothing comes of it. “We’ll be in the city of course. Busy on the weekend, and all that. Anyplace else you’d like to stop off at while we’re there so we can make the time?”

Don chuckles; David knows him well enough to understand Don’s own concerns about being well-fed. The way to a man's heart is through his stomach, after all.

It looks a little as though David wants to say something, words unspoken on the tip of his tongue. Don has long since learned that the way to get most people to talk is patience. There’s little point in pushing for a conversation somebody doesn’t want to have; years of sitting quiet have taught Don that in most instances, people find it easier to spill secrets to a placid companion. So he waits, a small smile of amusement tugging at his lips as he watches David fiddle with his bag strap and fail to move. He looks nervous enough that it’s almost anticlimactic when david proposes going home. 

“I’m up for seeing anything. I don’t really leave here all that often; might not want to overwhelm ourselves, hm? But I’d like to see the big library, perhaps. Maybe the botanical gardens too. But I’m up for anything.”

The ‘as long as it’s with you’ goes unsaid.  

“Look, I’ll walk you back. I know it’s not all that late but it’s on my way.”
